PCWorld reported the matching 36%-off offer as a Cyber Monday Amazon deal for Microsoft 365 Personal. The price was $44.99 for one year, compared with a then-regular annual price of $69.99.

“Lifetime” is not Microsoft’s official consumer product category. Sellers may use the word to mean a license for one specific Office version, but it can also describe a key with unclear origins, resale rights or activation support.
Microsoft calls Office Home 2024 a one-time purchase. That means you pay once for the specified version and may continue using that licensed version subject to Microsoft’s license terms and activation requirements. It does not mean guaranteed access to every future Office release or unlimited support forever.

Microsoft states that Office 2024 does not include the continuing services supplied with Microsoft 365 and does not include an upgrade to the next major Office release. A future major version would generally require a separate purchase.

Microsoft’s Office Home 2024 product page describes the product as a one-time purchase for one PC or Mac, with classic Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote for non-commercial use. Outlook is not listed as an included application.
Which option is the better deal?
Choose Microsoft 365 Personal if you need Outlook or multiple devices
Microsoft 365 Personal is usually the more suitable choice if you need Outlook, use a desktop and laptop, want 1 TB of OneDrive storage, or want continuing feature updates. The subscription also spreads the cost over time instead of requiring a large one-time payment.
Its value depends partly on whether you would otherwise pay separately for cloud storage. Someone who does not use OneDrive may value the plan less than someone who needs cross-device files, backup and cloud access.

Choose Microsoft 365 Family for a household
Family can be more economical when two or more people need Office. It supports one to six people under the plan’s terms, rather than limiting the subscription to a single user.

Choose Office Home 2024 if you want one computer and no recurring bill
Office Home 2024 can make sense if you need only the classic desktop applications, use one PC or Mac, do not need Outlook or OneDrive, and prefer to avoid an annual subscription.
Microsoft’s retrieved pages show different Office Home 2024 price snapshots—$149.99 in older or cached results and $179.99 in a newer search result. Verify the live Microsoft checkout price before buying and treat any published price as a dated U.S. snapshot, before applicable tax.
Check the break-even point
To compare costs, divide the one-time Office price by the annual Microsoft 365 price:

This calculation is incomplete if you would use OneDrive, Outlook, multiple devices or Family sharing. It also does not account for eventually buying a newer Office version. Recalculate using the standard renewal price after any introductory promotion ends.

Be cautious with unusually cheap marketplace listings, especially those labeled “lifetime key” or “Professional Plus.” Before paying, verify:
- The exact product and edition
- Whether the license is a consumer one-time purchase, subscription, volume license or another type
- The seller’s identity and authorization
- The permitted country or region
- Whether commercial use is allowed
- The number of covered devices
- How redemption occurs through Microsoft’s official account and setup process
- The return policy and documentation supplied with the purchase
A key may be unauthorized, region-restricted, resold from a volume-license channel or later deactivated. Do not download modified installers or “activators.” Keep the receipt and license documentation, redeem through Microsoft’s official process where applicable, and contact the retailer first if a code is invalid. Microsoft support cannot be assumed for a key bought from an unauthorized reseller.
Common buying mistakes
- Confusing Microsoft 365 with Office 2024: Microsoft 365 is a subscription; Office Home 2024 is a one-time purchase.
- Assuming Outlook is included: Outlook is included with Microsoft 365 Personal but is not listed with Office Home 2024.
- Ignoring the device limit: Office Home 2024 covers one PC or Mac.
- Using a home edition commercially: Office Home 2024 is described for non-commercial use. Business users should check the correct edition, such as Office Home & Business 2024.
- Forgetting renewal: Promotional subscription pricing can return to the standard rate after the first term.
- Assuming every future upgrade is included: One-time Office purchases do not provide the Microsoft 365 upgrade model.
Other legitimate ways to reduce the cost
Qualified students and educators may be eligible for Microsoft 365 Education through an eligible institution. Some employees may qualify for Microsoft’s Home Use Program through their employer. Eligibility must be verified directly; neither discount is universally available.
