The deal was real, but it was not current. On November 29, 2024, Engadget reported that Amazon had cut the price of the 2022 13-inch MacBook Air with an M2 chip, 16GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD to $749, from roughly $999–$1,000—about 25% off. As of September 15, 2026, that is a historical Black Friday price, not a currently verified offer.
At $749, the configuration was an excellent value for students and everyday users who prioritized 16GB of memory. Its main weakness was the fixed 256GB of storage. A similar discount could still make the M2 Air worthwhile, but only if it is substantially cheaper than newer MacBook Air models and the listing’s configuration, condition and warranty are verified.

The exact MacBook Air configuration matters
This was not the commonly advertised base 8GB model. It was the 13-inch M2 Air with 16GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD. Apple’s specifications confirm that the 2022 M2 MacBook Air could be configured with 8GB, 16GB or 24GB of unified memory and with storage capacities ranging from 256GB to 2TB.
That distinction is important because retailer pages may group several configurations under one product family. A listing titled “M2 MacBook Air” can change between 8GB and 16GB memory or between 256GB and 512GB storage. Check the specifications shown for the exact unit in your cart, not just the product title or headline discount.

Apple rates the laptop for up to 18 hours of Apple TV app movie playback and up to 15 hours of wireless web browsing. Those are Apple’s controlled testing figures, not a guarantee of everyday battery life; brightness, applications, wireless use and workload affect real-world runtime. Apple’s full technical specifications are available in its M2 MacBook Air support document, while its launch announcement describes the design, camera, speakers and charging system in more detail.

For a laptop bought to last several years, 16GB was a meaningful upgrade over the 8GB configuration. It gives macOS more room for heavy browser multitasking, photo editing, music-production software, coding tools and moderate development environments. It can also help when using containers or virtual machines, although those workloads remain constrained by the Air’s overall design.
The memory is unified and soldered rather than user-upgradable. Buyers cannot purchase the 8GB version and add memory later. The same is true of the internal SSD, so the configuration selected at checkout is effectively permanent.
Sixteen gigabytes does not turn the M2 Air into a MacBook Pro. The Air is fanless, has fewer ports and generally has less sustained cooling capacity for long-running, demanding workloads. It is better understood as a capable ultraportable than as a workstation.

The 256GB SSD was the key compromise
The deal paired the desirable 16GB memory upgrade with the least generous storage option. A 256GB drive can work well for documents, web applications, schoolwork and streaming, but macOS, applications and personal files consume part of the advertised capacity.
Storage can become restrictive quickly if you keep large photo catalogs, video projects, music libraries, games or development environments locally. Because the SSD is not upgradeable, the practical alternatives are deleting files, using cloud storage or carrying an external drive. An external SSD can be a sensible workaround, but it adds cost and is less convenient than having adequate internal storage.
If you need 512GB or more internally, compare the total cost of the laptop plus any storage solution with a newer or higher-capacity MacBook Air. The cheapest headline price is not always the cheapest setup for your actual workflow.
How it compares with newer MacBook Air models
The M2 Air launched in 2022. Apple’s current documentation now covers newer MacBook Air hardware, including a 2026 M5 model with 16GB of memory standard and 512GB of storage standard. That does not make the M2 machine unusable, but it changes the value calculation.
| Consideration | 2024 deal configuration | Newer Air alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Older-generation M2 | Newer-generation Apple silicon |
| Memory | 16GB unified memory | Current models also offer 16GB or more |
| Storage | 256GB SSD | Current baseline may include more storage, depending on model |
| Display | 13.6-inch, 500 nits | Comparable size and brightness on current Air models |
| Connectivity | Two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports plus MagSafe | Newer models may support newer connectivity standards |
| Financial trade-off | Very attractive at $749 | Higher upfront cost, but a longer product runway |
Do not compare the M2 deal only with its original list price. Compare it with the actual price of a current 16GB MacBook Air, including any extra storage you would need. Apple’s current MacBook Air specifications and MacBook Air specifications page establish the newer hardware, but they do not verify a current sale price.

Who should consider an M2 Air at a similar price?
- Students: It is light enough to carry daily and has ample memory for research, documents, video calls and many browser tabs.
- Office and home users: It handles writing, spreadsheets, email, browsing and media consumption comfortably.
- Travelers: The 2.7-pound design, MagSafe charging and long rated battery life suit mobile use.
- Moderate developers: Editors, terminals, local tools and lighter coding workflows benefit from 16GB, provided storage demands are manageable.
- Budget-conscious Mac buyers: The value is strongest when the price is far below a comparable current-generation model.
Who should skip it?
- Buyers who need 512GB or more of internal storage.
- Professionals doing sustained high-end video production, 3D rendering or other long CPU-intensive work.
- People who need extensive built-in connectivity or a desk setup with demanding external-display requirements.
- Anyone paying a price close to a newer MacBook Air.
- Buyers who cannot verify whether the unit is new, refurbished, open-box or used.
- Anyone expecting the newest Apple silicon features or the longest possible support runway.
A practical price framework
These thresholds are buying guidance, not current retailer quotes:
Rank #3
- Apple M2 8-Core Chip 16GB Unified RAM | 1TB SSD
- 15.3" 2880 x 1864 Liquid Retina Display 10-Core GPU | 16-Core Neural Engine
- Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) | Bluetooth 5.3 Dual Thunderbolt 3 Ports
- 1080p FaceTime Full HD Camera Backlit Magic Keyboard
- Force Touch Trackpad | Touch ID Sensor macOS
- Excellent: Around $749 or less for a new 16GB/256GB unit from a reputable seller.
- Reasonable: A clearly substantial discount versus a current 16GB Air, with transparent condition, warranty and returns.
- Weak: A price close to a newer model, especially when the newer laptop includes more storage.
- Avoid: Any listing that does not clearly verify memory, storage, condition, seller and warranty.
The price gap should compensate you for buying a 2022 machine with a smaller drive and older processor. “25% off” by itself is not enough if the reference price is outdated or a newer model offers better value at checkout.

- Confirm memory: It must say 16GB unified memory, not 8GB.
- Confirm storage: Check whether it is 256GB or 512GB and decide whether that meets your needs.
- Check condition: Distinguish new, refurbished, open-box and used inventory.
- Identify the seller: On Amazon, determine whether the unit is sold by Amazon or a third-party marketplace seller.
- Review returns: Check the exact return window and exclusions before paying.
- Verify warranty: Confirm whether Apple’s limited warranty, retailer protection or only a third-party guarantee applies.
- Check the final price: A deal-page price may expire, vary by region or change at checkout.
- Inspect the exact model: Verify the model year, color and configuration.
- For used or refurbished units: Check battery condition and whether accessories are included.
Other ways to spend the budget
A newer MacBook Air with at least 16GB of memory is the clearest alternative for buyers who value longevity, newer silicon and more current features. An Apple-sold refurbished Mac can be a middle ground, although inventory and configurations change frequently; check the exact specification and warranty at Apple’s refurbished Mac store.
If the only problem is capacity, an external SSD from a reputable vendor can extend the usefulness of the 256GB model. That is a workaround, not a substitute for buying adequate internal storage when you regularly work away from your desk. AppleCare+ is also optional rather than essential; consider it based on how long you will keep the laptop, how often you travel and what protection you already have. Apple’s Mac coverage information is available at Apple Support.
Verdict
The $749 Amazon offer was a strong Black Friday 2024 deal because it combined the M2 MacBook Air’s lightweight design with 16GB of memory at a mainstream-laptop price. It was not a perfect configuration: the 256GB SSD was fixed and could require external or cloud storage.
In 2026, buy an M2 Air only when the discount is substantial relative to a newer 16GB MacBook Air, the unit is correctly configured and the warranty and return terms are clear. At roughly $749, new and verified, it remains a sensible budget Mac. At current-generation pricing, skip it and buy newer hardware instead.
