No. Brave is not owned by Google. Brave is developed by Brave Software, a privately held, for-profit company co-founded in 2015 by Brendan Eich and Brian Bondy. However, Brave is not completely independent of Google’s browser ecosystem: its desktop and Android versions are built from Chromium, the open-source project that also forms the technical foundation of Google Chrome.
So the accurate answer depends on what you mean by “owned”: Brave is corporately separate from Google, but desktop and Android Brave is technologically dependent on a Google-led Chromium ecosystem.

Why people think Google owns Brave
Brave can look familiar to Chrome users because both browsers use Chromium-based technology. They support many of the same websites and Chrome-compatible extensions, and their interfaces share conventions such as tabs, address bars and browser settings.
That resemblance does not make Brave a Google product. Chromium is a shared open-source browser project used by several independent companies. Microsoft Edge, Opera and Vivaldi are also Chromium-based, but they are not Google-owned browsers.

The confusion is understandable because Google contributes heavily to Chromium and plays a major role in the project’s development direction. That creates technical and ecosystem influence, not ownership of every browser built from the code.
Who owns Brave?
Brave is a product of Brave Software, which describes itself as a privately held, for-profit company. Brave says it was co-founded in 2015 by Brendan Eich and Brian Bondy. Eich is identified by the company as a founder and chief executive.
Brave Software operates the Brave browser and related products including Brave Search, Brave Ads, Brave Wallet, Brave Leo and subscription services. Brave’s official FAQ says there is “no business relationship” between Brave and Google, or between the Brave browser and Google Chrome. Brave’s FAQ is the primary source for that statement.
Because Brave is privately held, a complete, current public shareholder register is not available in the reviewed sources. It is therefore more precise to say that there is no verified evidence in those sources that Google owns Brave—not to claim knowledge of every possible indirect investment or financial connection.
Brave, Chromium and Google Chrome are different things
| Product or company | What it is | Google-owned? |
|---|---|---|
| Brave Software | Private company that develops Brave products | No verified evidence that Google owns it |
| Brave browser | Browser made by Brave Software | No |
| Chromium | Open-source browser project and code foundation | Part of a Google-led ecosystem; not the same product as Chrome |
| Google Chrome | Google’s branded, proprietary browser product | Yes, through Google/Alphabet |
A useful analogy is that Chromium is a shared foundation, Google Chrome is Google’s finished branded product, and Brave is a separate browser built on that foundation with its own code, defaults, privacy controls and services.
How much does Brave change from Chromium?
Brave says it modifies the Chromium foundation rather than simply applying a different logo. Its stated changes include:
- Blocking ads and trackers by default through Brave Shields.
- Removing or disabling privacy-invasive features where possible.
- Disabling Google Accounts and Google Sync integration.
- Removing Chrome-specific telemetry and reporting code.
- Adding Brave-specific services such as Brave Search, Brave Rewards, Brave Wallet, Brave Leo and subscription products.
Brave’s technical explanation of what it removes from Chromium provides more detail. “Removing Google code” should not be interpreted as meaning that Brave contains no code originally written by Google. Chromium is a large open-source project with contributions from Google and other organizations, and Brave continues to use the underlying browser technology.

Does Google control Chromium?
Chromium’s source code is open, but “open source” does not mean that its development is entirely neutral or ownerless. Google contributes extensively to Chromium and has substantial influence over its releases, browser-engine priorities and web-platform direction.
Brave can maintain a fork, change the code and make product decisions independently. Nevertheless, it remains exposed to ecosystem-level changes such as:
- Updates to the Chromium rendering and JavaScript engines.
- Changes to web standards and compatibility expectations.
- Changes affecting Chrome-compatible extensions.
- Technical decisions that influence how websites are built and tested.
This is the key distinction: Google can influence the technology Brave builds on without owning Brave Software or controlling Brave as a subsidiary. Brave is less dependent on Google than Chrome as a company-owned product, but more dependent on Google’s browser-engine ecosystem than Firefox.
Does Brave use Google Search?
Not necessarily. Brave Search is a separate search engine from Google Search. Brave describes it as using an independent web index and says it does not profile users. You can learn more in the Brave Search FAQ.

A user can visit Google manually, select it as a preferred search provider where available, or use Google-owned services such as Gmail, YouTube and Google Drive. Brave is a browser; it cannot stop a user from visiting a particular website unless the user or an organization applies additional controls.
Brave’s browser choice can reduce default Google integration, but it does not automatically remove every connection to Google. Websites may also use Google-hosted infrastructure, analytics, advertising systems or sign-in tools independently of the browser’s ownership.
Does using Brave support Google?
The answer depends on the type of “support” you mean.

Corporate support
Using Brave does not mean purchasing or using Google Chrome as a Google-owned browser product. Brave states that it has no business relationship with Google or Google Chrome. That statement should be understood as Brave’s description of its corporate relationship, not as proof that no Google-originated software or third-party infrastructure appears anywhere in the product.

Brave benefits from Chromium’s codebase, compatibility work and ongoing browser-engine development. In that sense, using Brave participates in the wider Chromium ecosystem. Readers who want to avoid that ecosystem entirely should look at a non-Chromium browser such as Firefox.
Web-service support
Brave users can still sign in to Google services and browse Google-owned websites. The browser itself does not turn those services into Brave products or make Brave Google-owned.
Market support
Choosing Brave instead of Chrome may reduce direct use of Google’s browser product, but Brave’s Chromium foundation also contributes to the broader importance of Chromium-based browsing. That is a legitimate concern for readers who want engine-level independence, even though it is not evidence of corporate ownership.
Brave is not technically identical on every platform
Brave’s engine depends on the operating system:
- Desktop and Android: Brave uses a Chromium fork.
- iPhone and iPad: Brave uses Apple’s WebKit, reflecting Apple’s platform requirements and browser-engine rules.
Consequently, features, compatibility and privacy behavior can vary by platform. A simple statement that “Brave is Chromium-based” is broadly accurate for desktop and Android, but incomplete when discussing Brave on iOS. Brave describes these platform differences on its About page.

Should you use Brave if you want less Google?
Brave is a good fit if your goal is to reduce Chrome’s default Google integration, block ads and trackers without configuring multiple extensions, and use a browser operated by a separate company. Brave Shields is enabled by default, and Brave offers its own search and privacy-oriented services.
Brave is not the clearest fit if your priority is avoiding Google’s Chromium engine altogether. Firefox uses Mozilla’s Gecko engine instead of Chromium. That makes it the clearer mainstream choice for reducing dependence on Google’s browser-engine ecosystem, although privacy and compatibility still depend on settings, extensions, telemetry choices and user behavior.

Brave’s Chromium base generally helps with Chrome-oriented websites and extensions, but privacy protections can occasionally interfere with site functionality. Google-specific account, sync and proprietary integrations may also behave differently from Chrome. On iOS, WebKit creates a separate technical situation.
What Brave’s business model means
Brave is not a free Google subsidiary operating under another brand. The company says it generates revenue through lines including Brave Ads, subscriptions, Search API revenue, Wallet fees and partnership deals. The browser itself is available without charge, while some related products are paid.

Common misconceptions
“Brave is Chrome with a different logo.”
Brave uses Chromium, not the Google Chrome product. It adds its own interface, privacy protections, defaults, services and code changes, and says it disables or removes several Chrome-specific integrations and telemetry components.
“Brave has nothing to do with Google.”
That is too broad. Brave is not Google-owned, but desktop and Android Brave is built on Chromium, and Brave users can still access Google websites and services.
“Chromium is Google’s browser, so Brave is Google-owned.”
This confuses a shared software foundation with ownership of a finished product. Multiple independent browsers use Chromium.
“Brave Search proves the entire Brave browser is independent.”
Brave Search and the Brave browser are separate products. Search may be independent of Google Search while the browser remains dependent on Chromium technology.
