How to choose an online plant seller
Start with the plant’s form and maturity
A seed packet, plug, bare-root rose, nursery-pot houseplant, unpotted succulent and established fruit tree are different purchases. A plug plant needs potting up promptly. An unpotted succulent needs a suitable container and fast-draining medium. A mature tree needs enough space, safe unloading and a site that matches its eventual size.

Live plants can be damaged by freezing temperatures, heat, delays or rough handling. Check the dispatch season, weather holds, carrier and delivery area. A live-arrival or replacement promise may require photographs, an unopened package, or a claim within a stated number of days. Bloomscape’s 30-day protection, for example, is described as applying when a plant fails despite proper care—not as an unconditional return policy.

Match the plant to your home or garden
Before ordering, record the available light, ceiling or planting space, humidity, pets and children, and (for outdoor plants) your USDA hardiness zone. Patch’s filters make those checks explicit. Nature Hills and Fast Growing Trees provide zone-oriented shopping tools, but the plant’s individual listing remains the final authority.
Calculate total cost, not just the listing price
Add the pot, saucer, soil or growing medium, fertilizer, shipping and any replacement risk. A low-cost plant in a nursery pot can cost more after you buy a decorative container; a bare-root or unpotted plant can be economical only if you already have the right supplies.
The 11 best places to buy plants online
1. The Sill — best for beginners who want coaching
The Sill combines design-forward potted plants with accessible education. Its easy-care section is a practical starting point if you are unsure how much light or watering a first plant needs. The main advantage is guidance alongside the plant, rather than a bare listing that leaves you to diagnose problems alone.
Choose it when you want a finished-looking houseplant and help building a routine. Confirm the pot size, light requirement and pet-safety information for the exact plant before checkout.
2. Bloomscape — best overall for home-ready plants
Bloomscape is the clearest fit when you want a plant that arrives ready to display. LeafyPixels’ 2026 comparison highlights EcoPots, protective packaging and Grow-How care resources. It also describes a 30-day guarantee for plants that fail despite proper care.
The guarantee is useful only if you can meet its care and claim conditions, so save the order details and photograph the plant promptly if it arrives damaged or declines.

3. Lively Root — best for indoor variety and subscriptions
Lively Root offers a year-round indoor catalog, including orchid and plant subscriptions. Its stock is described as nursery-grown and shipped from California facilities, making it a strong choice for shoppers who want recurring deliveries or more than the usual beginner plants.
Subscriptions trade convenience for less control over timing and selection. Check delivery geography and pause or cancellation terms before enrolling, and make sure your home can accommodate the expected plant sizes.
4. Leaf & Clay — best for succulents and cacti
Leaf & Clay stands out for more than 100 succulent varieties, colorful low-cost options and curated packs. LeafyPixels cites free USPS shipping, while Good Housekeeping has highlighted its variety packs.
Most plants arrive unpotted, so this is best for a buyer who already has containers and a fast-draining mix or is willing to pot up immediately. Packs are convenient for building a collection, but individual plants can have different light and watering needs.
5. Fast Growing Trees — best for trees, shrubs and large plants
Fast Growing Trees covers outdoor trees, shrubs, fruit trees, perennials, supplies and large indoor plants such as fiddle-leaf figs, rubber plants and ficus. Its growing-zone filter helps narrow outdoor choices before you buy.

- SYMBOL OF LUCK & PROSPERITY: A staple of Feng Shui tradition, the Money Tree is believed to "trap" fortune in its braided trunk. It is the perfect, meaningful gift for housewarmings, new jobs, or birthdays, offering a living, growing alternative to temporary flowers

6. Burpee — best for seeds and starter plants
Burpee is suited to gardeners who want to grow from seed or buy young plants that are harder to find locally. Its catalog includes vegetable, fruit and flower seeds in multiple packet sizes as well as starter plants.
Compare packet quantity, sowing dates and transplant timing. Seeds usually offer the lowest entry cost but require more time and successful germination; starters cost more and reduce that early-stage work.
7. Jackson & Perkins — best for roses
Jackson & Perkins specializes in roses, with classic and newer cultivars and searches organized by flower color and growth habit. That makes it easier to shop for a specific landscape role rather than an unnamed rose.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRead whether the listing is bare-root or a potted plant, then match planting timing and mature dimensions to your climate. Color and form are useful filters, but they do not replace checking disease resistance, sunlight and zone information on the individual cultivar.
8. Nature Hills — best for established fruiting plants
Nature Hills is described by Homes & Gardens as one of the largest US online nurseries, with established raspberries, blueberries, apples and other edible plants. Growing-requirement and zone tables help you evaluate whether a fruiting plant can survive and produce where you live.
Fruit production also depends on mature size, sun, soil, chill requirements and, for some plants, a compatible pollinator. Treat the table as a screening tool and verify the full plant description before ordering.
Rank #4
- HARDY INDOOR PLANT: Sansevieria Laurentii is a drought tolerant, durable, and adaptable houseplant for beginners
- GREAT FOR BUSY LIFESTYLES: This drought tolerant and resilient plant is easy to grow
- VARIEGATED SNAKE PLANT: This real plant showcases tall green leaves bordered with bright yellow edges
- EASY PLANT CARE: Thrives in low, medium, and bright light and requires minimal watering
- AIR-PURIFYING PLANT: Helps remove common indoor pollutants and supports a healthier home environment
9. Amazon — best for breadth, decorative pots and bulk packs
Amazon can be useful when you want to compare many nursery sellers, decorative-pot plants, assorted sets, starter plants or bulk packs in one marketplace. Searching for “live houseplant in decorative pot” can surface ready-to-display options.
There is no single Amazon plant standard: inspect the individual seller, recent reviews, fulfillment method, shipping timing, plant size and description. A low marketplace price is not comparable to a specialist nursery’s potted, protected shipment unless those details match.
10. Patch Plants — best for UK delivery and precise filters
Patch is a London-based service for indoor and outdoor plants with care guidance and filters for light, height, pet and child safety, and care difficulty. Those filters are valuable when you are choosing for a specific room or a household with animals.
Because the service is UK-focused, confirm that your postcode is covered and that the selected plant is appropriate for indoor conditions or the outdoor exposure at your address.
11. IKEA — best for affordable classic houseplants
IKEA offers affordable, familiar houseplants, often in a reasonably mature state, with care-guide stickers that help at the point of purchase. Most arrive in nursery pots rather than permanent decorative planters.

Include a separate pot, saucer and suitable soil in your budget if the nursery container is not the look or size you want. Inspect the plant in person on delivery or pickup when possible, since condition can vary by store and season.

- Confirm that the seller ships to your location and that the plant is in season for dispatch.
- Check mature size, current pot size, light needs, hardiness zone and pet or child safety.
- Read the live-arrival or replacement policy, including the claim window, evidence required and exclusions.
- Schedule delivery for weather that is safe for live plants; bring the parcel indoors as soon as it arrives.
- Inspect roots, stems, soil moisture and foliage for damage or pests, and isolate the new plant from existing plants until it passes inspection.
- Pot up plug plants or unpotted succulents promptly in an appropriate growing medium, then follow the seller’s care instructions for light and watering.
What current evidence can and cannot establish
Which? Gardening wrote in 2026 that buying plants and seeds online is convenient, can expose shoppers to varieties unavailable at garden centres and lets them use specialists. The Independent likewise notes that home delivery ranges from houseplants to mature trees and that many retailers publish care guidance.
Those descriptions do not create a common performance score for all 11 stores. Good Housekeeping’s 2023 roundup included personal ordering and arrival observations for several suppliers, but those older experiences should not be treated as universal current performance. Inventory, prices, shipping policies and guarantees change with date, season, seller and destination, so use the category matches above as a starting point and verify the exact listing before paying.
