T-Mobile increased its Regulatory Programs & Telco Recovery Fee by 50 cents per affected line on January 21, 2026. The charge is now $4.49 per month for a voice line and $2.10 for a mobile-internet line, according to T-Mobile’s current bill-support information.
That does not mean every T-Mobile customer saw the same increase. The fee generally applies to non-tax-inclusive postpaid plans, while customers on tax-inclusive plans generally do not pay it separately. Your bill may also have changed for unrelated reasons, including a plan migration, lost discount, add-on, device payment, or tax change.

The fee increased by $0.50 per affected line
T-Mobile’s January 2026 change raised the recurring fee as follows:
| Line type | Previously reported | Effective January 21, 2026 | Monthly increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Voice line | $3.99 | $4.49 | $0.50 |
| Mobile-internet line | $1.60 | $2.10 | $0.50 |
The earlier amounts and the timing of the prior increase were reported by Droid Life. Because the company has not provided a complete historical fee schedule in the cited materials, the “increased twice within roughly a year” description should be understood as reported history, not as a complete official fee table.

What does that mean for a family account?
Before any taxes, the recurring increase is:
- One affected voice line: $0.50 per month
- Four affected voice lines: $2 per month
- Six affected voice lines: $3 per month
- Ten affected voice lines: $5 per month
- Four affected mobile-internet lines: $2 per month
The fee may be taxable, so the actual increase can be slightly higher depending on your jurisdiction and account.
What is the Regulatory Programs & Telco Recovery Fee?
T-Mobile describes the charge as a combination of two cost-recovery components:
- Regulatory Programs: Costs associated with government mandates, programs, and obligations, including examples such as E911 and local-number portability.
- Telco Recovery: Costs and charges from other carriers and service providers for call delivery, network facilities, leases, operations, and related services.
Those descriptions are T-Mobile’s stated rationale for the fee—not an independently verified calculation of the company’s underlying costs. T-Mobile says the charge is collected and retained by T-Mobile.

No—not in the ordinary sense of a government tax collected and remitted to the government. T-Mobile’s support page says the Regulatory Programs & Telco Recovery Fee is not a government-imposed tax or charge. It is a company-created surcharge intended to recover some of T-Mobile’s costs.

The word “regulatory” describes the type of costs T-Mobile says it is recovering. It does not establish that the government required T-Mobile to charge customers this exact amount. T-Mobile’s terms also say surcharge components can change and may apply even if a customer does not directly benefit from the underlying programs or services.
Some customers and legal complaints have characterized similar charges as deceptive or “junk fees.” A lawsuit’s allegations are not a court finding, so they should not be treated as proof that the fee is illegal.
Who pays the fee?
The strongest general rule is that customers on non-tax-inclusive plans generally pay it. T-Mobile says customers on tax-inclusive plans do not pay this particular fee separately. The relevant treatment is described in its service-agreement materials.

How to find the increase on your T-Mobile bill
The charge may not appear as a prominent plan-price increase. T-Mobile says surcharges can appear in sections such as “T-Mobile Fees and Charges,” “Taxes, Fees & Surcharges,” or “Other Charges.” Use this audit:
- Open your latest bill on T-Mobile’s website or in the T-Life app.
- Open or expand the fee and surcharge sections.
- Look specifically for “Regulatory Programs & Telco Recovery Fee.”
- Compare the charge with a bill from before January 21, 2026, allowing for your billing-cycle dates.
- Count the affected voice and mobile-internet lines separately.
- Calculate the expected increase by multiplying affected lines by $0.50.
- Review the rest of the bill for a plan change, lost discount, device installment, add-on, late fee, or tax change.
A bill generated after January 21 may be the first one showing the change, depending on your billing cycle. Do not assume that a total increase of 50 cents, $2, or $6 came entirely from this fee.
Price Lock usually does not freeze this surcharge
A price guarantee may protect the regular recurring price of an eligible rate plan without freezing every item on the bill. T-Mobile’s Price Lock FAQ and terms and conditions distinguish plan charges from taxes, fees, surcharges, add-ons, per-use charges, third-party services, discounts, and device costs.

In practical terms, a customer may have protection against an increase to the regular plan price while still seeing a separate surcharge change. The specific Price Lock benefit, enrollment date, plan, and notice you received control the result. Do not assume that a general “price lock” promise guarantees an unchanged total bill.

Do not confuse this fee increase with T-Mobile’s later 2026 plan migrations
T-Mobile’s January surcharge increase is separate from the later retirement and forced migration of certain legacy plans. Reporting on those migrations described potential increases of up to $6 per voice or home-internet line and up to $3 per connected-device line for some customers.
That separate event could also affect free-line promotions, discounts, add-ons, or the regular plan price. Ars Technica reported billing problems involving some legacy-plan migrations, including lost free lines and unexpected add-ons. If your bill rose by several dollars per line, inspect the plan name and account changes rather than attributing everything to the 50-cent surcharge.
See the reported migration issues separately from the January fee change.
What to do if the fee appears to be wrong
- Confirm the line type. Check whether the charge is attached to a voice line, mobile-internet line, or connected device.
- Check your plan’s tax treatment. Verify whether your exact plan includes taxes and fees.
- Contact T-Mobile or call 611. Ask the representative to identify the exact fee, effective date, and lines being charged.
- Ask about account changes. Confirm whether a plan migration, discount change, or add-on occurred at the same time.
- Request a correction. If the fee was applied to an exempt plan, the wrong line type, or a line that should not be charged, ask T-Mobile to correct it.
- Keep records. Save bills, screenshots, chat transcripts, representative names, and case numbers.
T-Mobile’s terms say that, except where law provides otherwise, customers disputing taxes or fees tied to billing or location should request a refund within 60 days of the bill containing the charge. That is a contractual dispute rule, not a universal legal deadline for every type of complaint. If the issue is significant, preserve your records and review the applicable terms or seek qualified consumer-law advice.

Can you cancel without a penalty?
There is no blanket yes-or-no answer. Your options can depend on your plan terms, the notice T-Mobile sent, whether a Price Lock benefit applies, the cancellation date, and your billing cycle.
Before switching, check:
- Any remaining device-financing balance
- Whether promotional bill credits will stop
- Free-line or other account-level promotions
- Any material-adverse-change or Price Lock language in your notice
- Whether T-Mobile’s offer to cover a final month of recurring service charges applies to your account
Do not cancel solely because the bill rose by 50 cents per line without calculating the full cost. A cheaper plan or carrier may have different taxes, fees, coverage, roaming, data priority, device obligations, or promotional terms.
Bottom line
T-Mobile’s Regulatory Programs & Telco Recovery Fee increased on January 21, 2026, from $3.99 to $4.49 for voice lines and from $1.60 to $2.10 for mobile-internet lines. The increase is 50 cents per affected line, and it generally applies to non-tax-inclusive plans.
