Geopolitical uncertainty does not produce a dependable “stocks down, bonds up” trade. Whether either asset cushions a portfolio depends on what the shock does to inflation, economic growth, interest-rate expectations, currencies, credit markets and investor demand. Government bonds have diversified equities in some historical periods, but that relationship has also weakened or reversed.
A resilient allocation starts with your objective, time horizon, withdrawals, liquidity needs, risk tolerance and existing holdings—not a headline or a universal stock-bond percentage. The practical task is to choose exposures whose risks differ from one another, understand when that diversification can fail, and follow a written rebalancing policy rather than trying to predict the next geopolitical event.

Why geopolitical shocks do not create a simple stock-versus-bond rule
Markets react to the economic channel of an event, not merely to its label. A conflict or diplomatic crisis may reduce expected growth, push energy and commodity prices higher, disrupt trade, increase government borrowing or change the path of central-bank policy. Those effects can point stocks and bonds in different directions—or make both fall together.
In a growth scare with contained inflation, investors may seek high-quality government debt while reducing equity risk. Bond prices can rise when expected interest rates fall, creating a useful offset to declining stocks. In an inflationary shock, however, the same event can raise expected rates and reduce the present value of both corporate earnings and existing fixed-rate bonds. Credit spreads may also widen, hurting lower-quality bonds at the moment equities are under pressure.

The September 2025 BIS Quarterly Review illustrates why a past pattern cannot be treated as a standing rule. The review said correlations between US Treasuries and other safe assets or uncertainty gauges had approached zero after April 2025. It also found that most non-US investor selling of US assets in April reversed in May and June, and that the available evidence did not show material portfolio reallocation away from US assets. Those are observations for that review period, not a forecast for the next crisis.
What bonds can do in a portfolio
Provide a potential ballast in a disinflationary slowdown
High-quality bonds can provide income, a defined maturity and the possibility of price gains when market interest rates decline. That potential is strongest when a shock weakens demand and inflation expectations fall. A bond held to maturity can return its contractual principal if the issuer pays as promised, while a bond fund’s share price continues to reflect market rates and credit conditions.
Supply liquidity for planned spending
Shorter-maturity government securities and high-quality cash equivalents are generally less sensitive to rate changes than long-duration bonds. They can be useful for money needed soon, because the investor does not have to sell a long-maturity security after a sharp rate rise. Liquidity still depends on the instrument, market conditions and the account in which it is held; “bond” is not a single liquidity category.
Reduce reliance on equity income and sales
Coupons and maturities can help fund withdrawals without selling stocks after a market decline. This is a portfolio-function decision, not proof that bonds will rise during every equity sell-off. A ladder of maturities, for example, addresses cash-flow timing, while a broad bond fund provides diversification but no fixed date at which all principal is returned.

Bond risks that matter during geopolitical stress
Interest-rate and duration risk
When yields rise, prices of existing fixed-rate bonds generally fall. The longer the maturity or duration, the more a given yield change can move the price. A Reserve Bank of New Zealand-hosted study of daily data from 1 January 1980 through 31 December 2010 found larger cyclical price swings in longer-maturity bonds than in shorter-maturity bonds. Its sample covered a global stock index, US government bonds and gold from an international investor’s perspective, with returns denominated in US dollars: the reported daily-return standard deviation was 0.5% for 10-year US government bonds, 0.9% for the global stock index and 1.3% for gold. These are historical sample statistics, not current expected volatility.
The International Monetary Fund’s October 2024 Global Financial Stability Report, Chapter 1, discusses how quantitative tightening, a changing buyer base for government debt and interest-rate risk over the life of longer-dated securities can affect bond-market volatility. These are risks to evaluate, not a prediction of today’s yields or prices.
Inflation risk
Fixed coupon payments lose purchasing power when prices rise faster than expected. Inflation-linked securities can address a different risk from nominal bonds, but their prices can still fluctuate with real yields, liquidity and market expectations. An inflation-sensitive allocation is therefore not a guarantee of positive returns during an inflationary geopolitical shock.

Corporate, municipal and emerging-market bonds carry issuer and sector risks that US Treasury securities do not carry in the same way. During a crisis, investors may demand a higher risk premium from weaker issuers, pushing their prices down even if government yields decline. Check the issuer, credit quality, sector concentration, seniority and currency before treating a bond holding as a defensive asset.

Currency risk
A foreign bond can gain in its local currency while losing value for a home-currency investor if exchange rates move against it. Hedging can reduce that volatility but introduces costs and basis risk. A portfolio’s apparent bond diversification may therefore be largely currency exposure.
What historical evidence says about stock-bond diversification
Long-run relationships vary by inflation regime and market episode. J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s 2020 paper, using five-year rolling correlations between the S&P 500 and bond prices with US CPI data through 30 June 2019, found that bonds were more effective diversifiers during low-to-moderate inflation periods. It also noted that correlations were not reliably negative during high-inflation periods. The paper’s data end in 2019; they should not be presented as a live correlation reading.
The same conditionality appears in the RBNZ-hosted study Safe Haven Assets and Investor Behaviour under Uncertainty, which examined 1980–2010 data and compared crisis episodes. The authors caution: “A safe haven cannot be a safe haven in the long-run or at all times.” Their findings include episodes in which gold or bonds did not behave as a safe haven throughout the event. A safe-haven label describes behavior under particular conditions; it is not a promise of protection.

Compare portfolio roles instead of asset labels
| Decision axis | Questions to answer | Why it changes the trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Is the holding for long-term growth, current income, near-term spending or volatility control? | Equities generally supply growth potential over long horizons; fixed income can supply income, liquidity and a different set of risks, but none is guaranteed to offset stocks. |
| Economic shock | Would the event more likely weaken growth, raise inflation and rates, or do both? | Growth weakness can support high-quality bonds, while inflation and rate increases can pressure both bonds and equities. |
| Issuer and credit quality | Who owes the money, and how dependent is repayment on economic conditions? | Lower-quality credit may behave more like equities in a crisis; sovereign and investment-grade exposures have different default and spread risks. |
| Maturity and duration | When will the money be needed, and how much price movement can you tolerate? | Longer duration usually means greater sensitivity to yield changes; shorter maturities reduce that sensitivity but may require reinvestment sooner. |
| Inflation sensitivity | Would rising consumer prices damage your spending plan? | Nominal payments lose purchasing power in unexpected inflation; inflation-linked instruments respond to different drivers and still fluctuate in price. |
| Liquidity | Could you need to sell during a stressed market? | Funds, individual bonds and cash instruments have different trading, spread and maturity characteristics. |
| Currency | Are returns measured in your spending currency or a foreign currency? | Exchange-rate moves can dominate a foreign bond’s local-market return unless exposure is hedged or intentionally accepted. |
| Existing concentration | Do your stocks already cluster in one country, sector, currency or factor? | Adding bonds from the same issuer or currency may not diversify the risk you actually own. |
How to evaluate your own balance without forecasting the crisis
- Write down the jobs for each dollar. Separate emergency reserves and spending expected in the next few years from long-term capital. Money with a near-term job should not depend on a favorable geopolitical market reaction.
- Map current exposures. Look through funds and accounts for equity geography, sector concentration, bond issuer, credit rating, maturity, duration, currency and inflation linkage. A fund name alone may not reveal the risks.
- Match duration to the spending horizon. If a liability is due soon, compare it with shorter-maturity or cash-like instruments. Use longer duration only when you can tolerate larger interim price moves and have a reason tied to your horizon.
- Test more than one shock path. Consider separately a growth slowdown with falling rates, an inflation surge with rising rates, a credit-spread widening and a currency shock. Ask what happens to every major holding under each path; do not assume one “crisis” result.
- Set a loss and liquidity boundary. Decide how much temporary decline you could tolerate without abandoning the plan and how many months or years of withdrawals must be available without selling risk assets.
- Choose a rebalancing policy in advance. A calendar or tolerance-band policy can return the portfolio to its intended risk level. The sources available here do not establish a universally correct percentage, calendar or trigger; the policy should follow your plan and tax, account and trading constraints.
- Review after material life changes. A new withdrawal schedule, job change, debt obligation, relocation or change in risk capacity can alter the appropriate mix even when headlines are quiet.
Approaches that can look defensive but carry different risks
Shorter-maturity, high-quality bonds
These generally limit duration-driven price swings and can provide a place for near-term funds. Their income can reset more quickly as older securities mature, so they may not lock in today’s rate for long. They also do not eliminate inflation or issuer risk.
Longer-maturity government bonds
Long duration can provide stronger potential gains when yields fall sharply, but it can produce larger losses when rates or inflation expectations rise. The IMF’s discussion of changing demand and government-debt supply is particularly relevant to investors assuming that long-dated sovereign debt will always be the portfolio’s anchor.
Investment-grade corporate bonds
These add credit spread and issuer exposure to the interest-rate risk of government bonds. They may offer more income, but a recession or market panic can widen spreads and reduce their defensive behavior.
Inflation-linked bonds
These are designed around inflation-adjusted principal or payments under their terms, making them a distinct tool from nominal debt. Real-yield changes, liquidity and market pricing can still produce losses before maturity, and the inflation measure may not match an individual household’s expenses perfectly.

Individual bonds versus bond funds
An individual bond has a stated maturity and contractual cash flows if the issuer performs; selling before maturity exposes you to market price and trading costs. A bond fund continually buys and sells securities, diversifies maturities and issuers and offers daily pricing, but it has no single date when all shareholders receive principal back. The appropriate choice depends on cash-flow certainty, diversification needs, costs and the account structure.
Common mistakes during geopolitical headlines
- Assuming “safe haven” means risk-free. Historical episodes include periods when bonds or gold failed to protect investors.
- Chasing the first market move. Prices can reverse as investors reassess inflation, policy and economic damage; a single day does not establish a new correlation.
- Ignoring duration. Two funds both labeled government bonds can have very different sensitivity to rates because their maturities differ.
- Treating all bonds as interchangeable. Credit quality, currency and inflation exposure can make a bond holding behave more like an equity risk asset.
- Using a historical average as a forecast. The RBNZ sample ends in 2010, J.P. Morgan’s cited analysis ends in 2019 and the BIS observation covers a specific 2025 period. None supplies a current forecast for a particular event.
- Making an allocation decision without the rest of the balance sheet. Cash reserves, debt, pensions, real assets, taxes and planned withdrawals affect how much market risk a household can actually bear.
A practical decision checklist
Before changing an allocation, document the answers to these questions:
- What is the purpose and time horizon of each account?
- How much must be liquid in the next 12 months and over the next several years?
- What percentage of the bond exposure is government, investment-grade corporate, below-investment-grade or emerging-market debt?
- What are the weighted-average maturity and duration?
- How much exposure is nominal versus inflation-linked?
- Which holdings carry foreign-currency risk, and is that risk intentional?
- Would a rate rise, inflation shock or credit-spread widening cause a loss larger than you could tolerate?
- What written rule determines when you rebalance, and what taxes or transaction costs apply?
These questions turn a headline-driven choice into a portfolio-policy decision. They do not produce a universal stock-bond ratio because the reviewed evidence cannot support one.

Use stocks for the long-term growth your plan requires and use bonds according to the specific jobs they can perform—income, liquidity, maturity matching and risk diversification. Then examine duration, credit, inflation and currency exposures rather than assuming every bond will rise when stocks fall. Geopolitical uncertainty is a reason to verify that your portfolio can survive several economic paths, not a reliable signal to make a one-time switch.
