How to Protect an Ethereum Swap From Sandwich Attacks

By TheFinanceBase Team 11 min read

To reduce sandwich-attack risk on an Ethereum swap, keep the transaction out of the public mempool when practical, use a narrow slippage limit that still lets the trade settle, prefer sufficiently deep liquidity, and ensure any contract integration enforces a minimum output. These measures reduce exposure; none guarantees that every swap will avoid MEV.

A sandwich is a transaction-ordering exploit, not a private-key theft. A searcher places one transaction before your pending swap and another after it, trying to profit from the price movement your trade creates.

What a sandwich attack does to your swap

Ethereum.org describes the pattern as a searcher watching for a large decentralized-exchange trade, buying immediately before it moves the pool price, then selling after the user’s transaction at the resulting higher price. Your swap executes between those two trades. The attacker captures value from the price impact while you receive a worse rate. Ethereum.org summarizes the user effect plainly: “Users who are sandwiched face increased slippage and worse execution.” Read the explanation at Ethereum.org’s MEV documentation.

The attacker does not need access to your wallet, seed phrase, or signing key. The opportunity comes from seeing a pending transaction and influencing its position in the ordering of transactions. A public-mempool submission can reveal the token pair, trade size, and maximum slippage before miners or validators include it. Searchers use that information to decide whether the trade is profitable to bracket.

The three-transaction sequence

  1. Front transaction: the searcher buys the asset your swap is about to purchase, moving the pool price against your order.
  2. Your swap: the pool executes at a price worsened by the front transaction, up to the slippage limit you accepted.
  3. Back transaction: the searcher sells into the price movement created by your swap and attempts to realize the spread.

Automated market makers calculate prices from pool reserves. A large order changes those reserves, so the order’s own price impact can be observed and traded around. The risk is greater when a pool has little liquidity relative to your order because a smaller trade can move its price more sharply.

Protection you can apply before submitting

1. Consider private transaction routing

Private routing sends a swap through an arrangement that does not broadcast it to the public mempool. Without that public announcement, ordinary frontrunning searchers have less opportunity to see and bracket the order. Private submission is a mitigation, not a promise that an adverse execution is impossible: the route, relay, wallet, validator, and market conditions still matter.

Uniswap’s guide says its private pools keep trades from being broadcast to the public mempool and describes swap protection in Uniswap Wallet for transactions on Ethereum Mainnet. That is a vendor description of a specific wallet feature and network scope, not evidence that every wallet, chain, or RPC endpoint offers the same protection. Check the wallet’s current interface and supported network before relying on it. The guide is at Uniswap’s MEV-protection article, published October 24, 2025.

If your wallet exposes a “private,” “protected,” or similar submission choice, read the confirmation screen carefully. Make sure the swap is actually being sent through that path rather than through a normal public transaction. A private route can alter who receives the transaction first and how it is propagated, but it does not remove price impact, smart-contract risk, or the possibility of a failed transaction.

2. Consider intent-based execution

An intent-based system changes the execution path. Instead of publishing a conventional swap transaction for the public mempool to execute against a particular pool immediately, you sign an instruction describing what you want, such as buying one token for at least a specified amount of another. The system then asks designated fillers or solvers to compete to execute that intent.

Uniswap describes UniswapX as sending a user’s swap intent to a private network of fillers. Private distribution can reduce the visibility that enables a conventional public-mempool sandwich. It does not establish that every intent will receive a better result than every standard swap: filler competition, route availability, fees, liquidity, and timing still determine the outcome. Treat intent execution as an alternative mechanism to evaluate, not as a universal guarantee.

3. Set slippage narrowly enough to limit damage

Slippage tolerance is the worst execution price you allow. For an exact-input swap, it effectively defines the minimum output you will accept; for an exact-output swap, it limits the maximum input. A larger tolerance makes it easier for a legitimate trade to settle while the market is moving, but it also gives an attacker more room to worsen your execution before the transaction reverts. A very small tolerance constrains that room but can cause a valid transaction to fail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no evidence-based universal percentage that fits every Ethereum swap. The appropriate bound depends on the pair, order size, pool depth, route, volatility, and how quickly the transaction can be included. Start with the tightest setting that is realistic for the market you are trading. If a transaction repeatedly fails while the quote changes, adjust the bound only enough to account for that movement rather than choosing a wide value by default.

Do not confuse a displayed price estimate with a binding protection. The transaction must carry the slippage limit in its calldata or through the execution system’s equivalent rule. Review the final minimum received or maximum paid value on the confirmation screen before signing.

4. Prefer deeper liquidity when routes are otherwise suitable

Pool depth determines how much your trade moves the reserves. Uniswap identifies low-liquidity pools as prime MEV targets because even small swaps can swing their prices. A deeper pool generally absorbs a given order with less price impact, reducing the price movement an attacker can exploit around that order.

Depth alone is not a reason to choose an unsuitable route. Compare the expected execution price, fee tier, path across pools, token risk, and your slippage bound together. A route through a deeper pool can still be inferior if it adds expensive fees or a poor intermediary asset. Conversely, a low-fee route with shallow liquidity may expose you to more impact than its fee savings justify.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Compare public and private choices on the same quote

When a wallet offers multiple execution methods, compare them using the same trade size and token pair. Record the expected output, minimum output, network fee, liquidity route, and whether submission is public or private. If an intent-based option quotes a different result, check whether its fee or filler compensation is already reflected in the amount you receive.

Available sources do not provide a controlled performance comparison among providers. A private route should therefore be judged by its stated propagation method and the actual quote shown for your transaction, not by an assumption that it always saves a fixed amount.

A practical decision sequence for a single swap

Use this sequence immediately before signing. It is designed to make the relevant trade-offs visible without promising a risk-free transaction.

  1. Identify the execution method. Note whether the wallet will broadcast to the public mempool, use a private route, or submit an intent to a private network of fillers.
  2. Inspect the route. Confirm the token pair, intermediary tokens, pools, fee tiers, and quoted output. A route that crosses several pools may have different price-impact and failure characteristics from a direct pool.
  3. Check pool depth relative to your order. If a small order causes a large displayed price impact, look for another sufficiently liquid route rather than compensating with a broad slippage setting.
  4. Set the execution bound. Use the minimum received or maximum paid value that still allows settlement under the market’s observed movement. Avoid a zero or extremely broad bound.
  5. Review the final transaction. Verify the recipient contract, token approvals, amount, deadline, network, and execution bound. Reject a transaction if the wallet’s confirmation differs materially from the quote you intended to accept.
  6. Submit through the chosen path. If private protection is selected, confirm that the wallet labels the transaction as protected or private and that the network is one covered by that feature.
  7. Check the receipt. After inclusion, compare the actual output with the minimum you approved and inspect the transaction status. A successful transaction within your bound can still be less favorable than the original quote because the bound is a ceiling on loss, not a promised price.

What smart-contract developers must enforce

A user-facing setting is not enough when a contract integration leaves the output unconstrained. The integration should pass a meaningful amountOutMinimum for an exact-input swap, or enforce an equivalent bound for the chosen trade type. Uniswap Developers explicitly warn: “Setting this to zero makes your contract vulnerable to sandwich attacks and price manipulation.” Their trading overview is available at Uniswap Developers.

Use a minimum output tied to a current quote

The minimum should be derived from a quote and an intentional tolerance, with allowances for normal market movement and transaction latency. Hard-coding zero defeats the protection. Hard-coding an obsolete number can cause needless reverts or, if it is too permissive, allow harmful execution.

Consider an on-chain price oracle

For integrations that need an independent reference, Uniswap’s documentation points to an on-chain price oracle as another way to enforce slippage limits. Oracle design introduces its own concerns: update frequency, manipulation resistance, the selected market, and how the contract handles stale or unavailable data. The contract should reject execution when the reference is outside its validity rules rather than silently proceeding.

Keep approvals and deadlines narrow

A swap bound protects the output, while a transaction deadline limits how long a signed order can remain executable. Use a deadline appropriate to expected inclusion and avoid leaving a transaction valid indefinitely. Limit token approvals to the amount and spender required by the integration where the wallet and application support that control. These practices do not stop a sandwich by themselves, but they reduce the damage from delayed or misdirected execution.

Comparing common execution choices

Choice How the order is exposed Main risk trade-off What to check
Public-mempool standard swap The pending transaction is visible to searchers before inclusion. Offers familiar execution and broad wallet compatibility, but exposes the order to transaction-ordering strategies. Slippage bound, pool depth, route, fee, deadline, and whether the quote can tolerate the time to inclusion.
Private routing The transaction is kept out of the public mempool through the selected wallet or submission path. Reduces visibility to public-mempool frontrunners; coverage, relay behavior, and wallet support vary. Exact wallet and network coverage, private status shown at confirmation, route, and final output.
Intent-based execution A signed swap intent is sent to a private network of fillers rather than exposed as a conventional public swap. Changes who and how executes the order; the result depends on filler competition, route, fees, and available liquidity. Intent terms, minimum output, filler or execution fee, expiry, and the quoted route.
Deep-liquidity pool Exposure depends on the submission method, but the pool generally moves less for a given order. Usually reduces price impact relative to a shallow pool; a higher fee or longer route may offset that benefit. Pool reserves or the wallet’s depth indicator, expected output, fee tier, and route.
Shallow-liquidity pool Exposure depends on the submission method, while the order itself can move the pool substantially. More price impact and a larger opportunity for a searcher to trade around the order. Whether another route offers materially deeper liquidity at an acceptable fee.

Diagnosing failed or unexpectedly expensive swaps

The transaction reverted for slippage

A revert usually means the market moved outside your allowed bound before inclusion, or the route could not provide the quoted amount. Recheck the pair, route, pool depth, and current quote. If the market is functioning and the trade is still worthwhile, make a small, deliberate adjustment to the bound or choose a more liquid route. Do not solve repeated failures by setting the tolerance so wide that the protection becomes meaningless.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The swap succeeded but output is near the minimum

Execution near the bound indicates that market movement, price impact, or an adverse ordering event consumed most of your allowed range. Review whether the transaction used the public mempool, whether the pool was shallow, and whether your order was large relative to available liquidity. For future trades, consider a private route or intent method, a deeper pool, a smaller order, or a tighter bound that remains workable.

The wallet shows protection but the transaction was public

Check the wallet’s network and feature coverage, then inspect the transaction’s propagation details if the wallet provides them. Vendor features can change, and a label may apply only to a particular wallet version or network. If the path cannot be verified, treat the next transaction as public and rely on the other controls rather than assuming protection.

The quote is poor despite deep liquidity

Depth is only one variable. A multi-hop route can add fees and price impact; a token can have transfer behavior that changes the received amount; and a volatile market can move during inclusion. Compare the complete route, fee, minimum output, and submission method instead of judging the pool by depth alone.

What ERC-8377 proposes

ERC-8377, titled “Reference-Relative Slippage Bounds,” proposes a different way to calculate an acceptable execution floor. A caller supplies a slippage policy, a quote oracle, and a maximum deviation. At execution time, the contract reads a reference price and derives the minimum output from that reference rather than relying only on a static amount chosen when the transaction was signed. Read the proposal at the ERC-8377 specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The proposal’s goal is to shrink the band in which an attacker can extract value when the market moves between signing and execution. It does not eliminate MEV, guarantee a particular price, or ensure that a route is private. ERC-8377 is a proposal, and the cited specification does not establish broad deployment or universal wallet and protocol support. Developers should verify implementation status, oracle assumptions, and compatibility before designing around it.

Limits you should keep in mind

  • Private is not synonymous with risk-free. A private path reduces public visibility but still depends on the operator, relay, validator, route, and contract.
  • Intent execution is not a guaranteed price improvement. It changes the execution mechanism; the final result remains market-dependent.
  • Slippage is a trade-off. Narrow bounds can revert during ordinary volatility, while broad bounds increase the loss you are willing to tolerate.
  • Liquidity is relative to order size. A pool that is deep for a small swap can be shallow for a large one.
  • No supplied source supports a market-wide loss rate or protection percentage. Avoid claims that a particular setting prevents a fixed share of attacks.
  • Wallet feature descriptions can change. Recheck the current network and wallet coverage before relying on a vendor’s private-swap feature.

A repeatable checklist

  • Is the transaction public, private, or intent-based?
  • Does the selected network and wallet actually support the private feature you chose?
  • Is the route using enough liquidity for your order size?
  • Does the minimum received or maximum paid value reflect a narrow, workable tolerance?
  • Have you compared route fees and expected output, not just the headline exchange rate?
  • For a contract integration, is amountOutMinimum or an equivalent oracle-based bound enforced?
  • Are the recipient, spender, deadline, token approvals, and network correct?
  • After inclusion, does the receipt match the bound and the route you approved?

The strongest practical approach combines controls rather than relying on one switch: reduce public visibility when possible, constrain execution with a realistic bound, choose liquidity that can absorb your order, and verify the contract’s output checks. Those steps make a sandwich less attractive and limit the damage if market movement or transaction ordering still produces a worse fill.
