The money is for approximately 1,882 named plaintiffs in that lawsuit—not automatically for every Galaxy S22 owner worldwide. No public claim form or global payout process has been identified in the available reporting.
What happened in the Galaxy S22 GOS case?
The Seoul High Court’s Civil Division 12-1 resolved the appeal through a compulsory mediation decision, sometimes described as a decision in lieu of mediation. Both sides accepted the decision by not objecting within the applicable two-week period. Korean reports say it became final on March 18, 2026, giving it the effect of a judicial settlement under Korean procedure. Yonhap News Agency and Financial News reported the procedural outcome.

This was not an ordinary appellate verdict declaring that Samsung owed damages to every Galaxy S22 customer. The practical result is a closed case and a reported payment to the consumers who brought it.

How much is Samsung paying?
Korean coverage reports a total payment of approximately ₩100 million. The plaintiffs originally sought ₩300,000 per person. At 1,882 plaintiffs, that original request would have totaled about ₩564.6 million, substantially more than the reported final amount.
| Figure | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ₩300,000 per plaintiff | Original damages demand, not the final reported payment |
| Approximately ₩100 million total | Reported amount for the Korean resolution |
| Approximately ₩53,135 per plaintiff | Simple ₩100 million ÷ 1,882 arithmetic estimate only |
The roughly ₩53,135 figure is not a confirmed individual payout. The available reports do not disclose the allocation formula, deductions for legal costs or expenses, or whether every claimant receives the same amount.

What was GOS?
GOS, or Game Optimizing Service, is Samsung software that manages CPU and GPU behavior during demanding games. Coverage describes it as a way to control heat and processing load; reported effects can include performance limits and, in some explanations, lower resolution or frame-rate performance.
The Seoul Central District Court’s official summary distinguished two policies:
- General policy: adjusts the phone according to the gaming environment without necessarily imposing a fixed CPU or GPU clock ceiling.
- Individual policy: applies clock ceilings to certain high-end games to manage device temperature.
The court said the individual policy applied only to some demanding games and did not limit performance when those games were not being used. The judiciary’s summary does not support a claim that every app or every S22 owner’s phone was constantly throttled.

Why did consumers sue Samsung?
The action was filed in March 2022, after the GOS controversy became public. The plaintiffs alleged that Samsung embedded or required GOS in the Galaxy S22 series, failed to adequately disclose relevant performance restrictions, and marketed the phones in a way that suggested high-end gaming performance without sufficiently explaining those limits. They claimed the nondisclosure caused financial harm. Edaily reported the original ₩300,000-per-person demand.
What did the first-instance court decide?
On June 12, 2025, the Seoul Central District Court rejected the plaintiffs’ damages claim. Its reasoning is important because it separated potentially misleading advertising from proof of compensable loss.
- The court accepted that Samsung’s advertising could be viewed as deceptive or misleading in relation to certain GOS restrictions.
- It found that the plaintiffs had not sufficiently proved each person’s actual compensable damage or a causal link to the alleged advertising.
- It was not shown that every plaintiff used a demanding game affected by the relevant GOS policy.
- The court did not accept a broad pre-sale disclosure duty owed to the general consumer population on the record before it.
The official summary also noted that some plaintiffs bought their phones before the relevant policy was introduced, while others purchased after an update removed certain clock restrictions. Those differences made a single, identical loss difficult to establish.

Does this mean Samsung “lost”?
That depends on what “lost” means. Samsung agreed to a payment that ended the appeal, so the company faces a practical financial consequence. But the case was resolved through court-directed mediation, not a published appellate damages judgment finding that all S22 owners suffered the same legally compensable injury.
“Samsung agreed to compensate the plaintiffs” is more precise than “Samsung was found liable to every customer.” The final resolution also does not establish that GOS made every Galaxy S22 defective or unusable.

- Check whether you were a named plaintiff. Look for official case correspondence or records showing that you joined the Korean action.
- Use independently verified contacts. If you believe you were part of the proceeding, contact the plaintiffs’ counsel or the court using details verified through official Korean sources.
- Be skeptical of unsolicited claim offers. Do not pay a third party to “unlock” this reported settlement without confirming that it is authorized and connected to the case.
- Do not treat social-media forms as official. The available reporting identifies no public global claim portal or general application procedure.
What about U.S. Galaxy S22 owners?
The finalized matter described here is a South Korean lawsuit. It does not establish payment or a new consumer remedy for U.S. owners. A separate U.S. complaint concerning Galaxy S22 GOS appears at ClassAction.org, but a filed complaint is not evidence that it joined the Korean case or produced a final U.S. settlement.

Why the case matters beyond this payout
The dispute illustrates the difference between advertised peak specifications and sustained performance under heat or software-management controls. It also shows why consumer damages cases can turn on individualized facts: which software policy applied, which games were used, when the phone was purchased, what updates changed, and whether a measurable loss can be proved.
A finalized mediation can end years of litigation without creating a universal finding that every customer was entitled to damages. For Galaxy S22 owners, the decisive question is therefore not simply whether Samsung paid, but whether the owner was one of the plaintiffs covered by this specific Korean proceeding.
