What did Samsung forecast?
Samsung Electronics’ October 8, 2026 earnings guidance put Q3 consolidated operating profit at approximately KRW 107.40 trillion and sales at approximately KRW 195 trillion. Samsung said the estimates use K-IFRS. Its stated figures are the medians of estimate ranges—KRW 107.3–107.5 trillion for operating profit and KRW 194–196 trillion for sales—because Korean disclosure rules do not allow earnings estimates to be presented as a range. The headline conversion of roughly US$80 billion is approximate and exchange-rate dependent; Samsung issued its guidance in won. SiliconANGLE rendered KRW 107.4 trillion as about US$80.17 billion. The won figure is the clearest way to state the forecast.

Samsung’s guidance comparison shows a dramatic year-over-year increase, while the sequential increase from the previous quarter is more modest. These are comparisons of preliminary Q3 guidance with the company’s previously reported quarter figures, not final Q3 results.

That is why “nearly nine times” is more accurate than saying the forecast is exactly nine times last year’s operating profit.
Why is Samsung’s operating-profit estimate so high?
Contemporaneous reporting points to strong demand for memory used in AI infrastructure, combined with tight supply. The demand applies to memory markets that include conventional DRAM and NAND as well as high-bandwidth memory (HBM) used in AI servers. Reuters described AI-infrastructure demand outstripping supply growth and a prolonged memory shortage; its report on Samsung’s outlook also discussed concerns about the pace and durability of the boom.

That market context helps explain the forecast, but Samsung’s guidance did not disclose how much operating profit came from AI-related chips or any particular business division. SiliconANGLE reported that Samsung’s detailed segment breakdown was expected with its comprehensive earnings report on October 29. Until those results are available, assigning a specific share of the estimate to AI memory would go beyond the disclosed figures. Before Samsung issued its guidance, Reuters reported an LSEG SmartEstimate of KRW 106.1 trillion for Q3 operating profit. The estimate drew on 21 analysts and was weighted toward analysts with stronger track records; Reuters said it had been revised down 7.7% since the end of August. Samsung’s KRW 107.40 trillion guidance was modestly above that pre-announcement consensus. This compares a company estimate with an analyst forecast—not two final reported results.

What could make the profit outlook less durable?
A large forecast does not guarantee that the same earnings pace will continue. Reuters identified several factors that could temper future growth or affect the translation of earnings into won:
- Slower memory-price increases: Prices were still supported by tight supply, but the pace of growth had moderated. Reuters quoted TrendForce senior vice president for research Avril Wu: “Although the market remains in a tight supply position, the pace of price growth is expected to decelerate.”
- Potentially peaked chip margins: Reuters reported concerns that memory margins may have reached a high point, even as demand remained strong.
- Currency movements: A stronger won can reduce the won value of earnings generated overseas.
- Long-term supply agreements: Contracts can limit how much a supplier benefits from rising market prices.
- Competition: Chinese memory suppliers could put pressure on prices or market position.
- Higher costs elsewhere: More expensive chips can raise input costs for smartphones and consumer electronics, potentially weighing on those businesses.
These are risks to the outlook, not evidence that Samsung’s Q3 guidance will be missed. The detailed results and segment breakdown are needed to assess how the estimated operating profit was earned.

When will Samsung report detailed Q3 results?
At the time of the October 8 guidance, Samsung’s detailed Q3 results were still pending. SiliconANGLE reported that the company’s comprehensive earnings report was expected on October 29, 2026. That report is the point at which readers could assess final results and the contribution of individual business segments against the preliminary estimate.
