Samsung Electronics estimates that it earned KRW 107.40 trillion in consolidated operating profit in the third quarter of 2026, equivalent to roughly $80 billion in current news coverage. The estimate covers July through September, is preliminary, and is operating profit—not net income. Samsung also estimates quarterly sales of KRW 195 trillion.
What Samsung reported—and what “$80 billion” means
In guidance issued October 8, 2026, Samsung put third-quarter consolidated operating profit at KRW 107.3 trillion to KRW 107.5 trillion and sales at KRW 194 trillion to KRW 196 trillion. The company presents the midpoints—KRW 107.40 trillion and KRW 195 trillion—as estimates under K-IFRS. It says the quarter’s closing process is not complete, so these are not final results. The roughly $80 billion figure is a rounded conversion used in news coverage; Samsung reported its estimates in Korean won. It should not be read as a dollar amount reported by the company or as net income. Operating profit is a measure of profit from operations before items such as financing costs and taxes; it is not the same as the amount left after all expenses.

How much did profit and sales change?
Samsung’s Korean-language preliminary announcement gives the year-over-year and quarter-over-quarter comparisons below. The two comparisons use different baselines: year over year compares with the same quarter in 2025, while quarter over quarter compares with Q2 2026.
#1 Best Overall
| Measure | Q3 2026 estimate | Change year over year | Change quarter over quarter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating profit | KRW 107.40 trillion | Up 782.50% | Up 20.01% |
| Sales | KRW 195 trillion | Up 126.59% | Up 13.70% |
The sequential comparison shows that the estimate also rose from Q2 2026, when Samsung reported operating profit of KRW 89.49 trillion and sales of KRW 171.5 trillion. The much larger year-over-year profit percentage reflects the comparison with a substantially lower prior-year base; it does not mean profit grew by that rate from the previous quarter. Why the AI memory boom matters
Reuters attributed the estimate’s surge to strong demand for memory used in AI systems and a supply-demand imbalance. The connection is that advanced computing infrastructure requires memory, and strong demand for memory products can support pricing and sales. Samsung’s Q2 results release had already described an industry-wide price uptrend and plans to address demand with high-value products including HBM4, DDR5, and SOCAMM2. That context helps explain why investors and analysts focus on AI-related memory, but it does not establish how much of Samsung’s Q3 profit came from those products. The company’s preliminary figure is consolidated across its businesses, and the cited guidance does not include a Q3 divisional breakdown. Reuters reported that detailed results, including divisional figures, would follow later in October.

What could temper the outlook?
A strong quarter does not guarantee that the same pace will continue. Reuters noted that the pace of memory-price increases had slowed and raised questions about how durable AI spending will be. If demand, supply conditions, or pricing change, future results could differ from this preliminary estimate. The Q3 guidance alone does not resolve those questions.
For readers following the company as an investment, the key distinction is between a striking quarterly operating-profit estimate and evidence about future earnings. The estimate confirms a major reported improvement for this quarter; it does not, by itself, establish that the AI-driven demand cycle will persist or show what Samsung ultimately earned after all costs and taxes.
