For most eligible computers bought directly from Dell in the United States, the standard return window is 30 days from the invoice date—not necessarily 30 days after delivery. You must start the return with Dell, receive authorization and a Credit Return Authorization (CRA) number when applicable, and ensure Dell receives the computer within 30 days after authorization. Shipping, promotions, business-account terms, customization, and product condition can affect the amount you receive.
This guide applies primarily to direct Dell U.S. purchases. A computer bought from Amazon, Best Buy, Costco, another retailer, or Dell Refurbished may follow different rules.

Can you return your Dell computer?
Usually, if all of the following are true:
- You bought the computer directly from Dell.com, by phone, or through an eligible Dell online store.
- The invoice date is within the applicable return period.
- The product is not excluded, such as a customized system, enterprise equipment, gift card, or certain software.
- The computer and included items can be returned in the condition and packaging Dell requires.
Dell’s standard U.S. policy is not an unconditional “30-day return” promise. Commercial purchases, purchase orders, custom configurations, promotions, warranties, and separate contracts can change the result. Check the current Dell U.S. Return Policy and the terms attached to your order.
Choose the right Dell process
| Situation | First action | Likely path |
|---|---|---|
| You changed your mind | Open the order at Dell.com/orders and choose “Return/Replace Items” | Refund or credit, subject to eligibility and deductions |
| The computer will not turn on or is malfunctioning | Contact Dell Technical Support using the service tag | Diagnosis, repair, exchange, or an approved return route |
| The box or computer arrived damaged | Photograph the shipment and request an exchange | Replacement or exchange process |
| Dell sent the wrong model | Compare the computer with the invoice and packing slip | Correction or exchange for Dell’s error |
| The order has not shipped | Look for “Cancel Order” immediately | Cancellation may be possible before production or packaging |
| You bought a customized system | Review the order terms and contact Dell | May be excluded from ordinary returns |
| You used a business account or purchase order | Review commercial terms | Possible exclusion or 15% restocking fee |
| You bought from another retailer | Contact the original seller | The retailer’s return policy controls |
Dell’s key deadlines and authorization rules
For eligible direct U.S. purchases, Dell states that the ordinary return window is 30 days from the invoice date. Find the invoice date, order number or Dell Purchase ID, and packing slip before contacting Dell. A promotion or order-specific term may provide a different deadline.

After Dell approves the return, Dell may issue a CRA number. Dell treats a product sent back without authorization as an unauthorized return. The policy says Dell may deny the refund or credit and may not send the product back to you.
Dell also states that it must receive the authorized return within 30 days after authorization. A carrier pickup request does not necessarily prove that Dell received the computer in time.
How to return a Dell computer
- Go to Dell.com/orders.
- Sign in to the account used for the purchase, or enter the order number as prompted.
- Open the relevant order.
- Select “Return/Replace Items.” Dell may display related labels such as “Return Status,” “View Return Details,” or “Open Return Details,” depending on the page and account status.
- Verify your identity and select the reason for the return.
- Save Dell’s authorization information, including the CRA number when provided.
- Back up and erase your personal data.
- Repack the computer with its original materials and included items.
- Print the Dell label or follow the assigned carrier pickup/drop-off instructions.
- Obtain a carrier receipt and tracking number.
- Track the case from the order page until Dell confirms receipt and processes the refund or credit.
If the online option is missing, contact Dell Order Support promptly. Do not assume the absence of a button means the return is approved or impossible.

Dell generally refunds or credits the actual purchase price paid for an eligible product, but the amount may differ from the original invoice total. A practical estimate is:
Eligible product price paid
− original shipping and handling, where applicable
− applicable restocking fee
− value of unreturned promotional items or redeemed incentives
= expected refund or credit
Taxes require order-specific treatment. Do not assume that sales tax will always be kept or refunded; review Dell’s return estimate and the law applicable to your order.
Shipping and restocking
Dell says original shipping and handling may be deducted. It also says it may charge a 15% restocking fee based on the actual product price paid for other permitted returns.
Dell’s general policy says qualifying personal-use consumer returns, defective products, and returns caused by Dell’s error do not incur a restocking fee and receive a no-cost return label. Dell’s Order Support material separately warns that business-segment returns may incur a 15% restocking fee. If the order used a business account, purchase order, payment terms, or a commercial agreement, do not rely on consumer-return language; ask Dell how it classified the transaction.

- Model: Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor (SFF)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
For example, a permitted business return with a $1,000 product price could have a possible $150 restocking deduction before shipping or other order-specific adjustments. That example does not mean every $1,000 Dell return will incur the fee.
Promotions, gift cards, and Dell Rewards
Returning only part of a promotion can change the refund. Dell may adjust the credit if you keep a free printer or other promotional hardware, return fewer items from a bundled discount, redeem a promotional gift card, or earn or use Dell Rewards.
- A free promotional item may have its attributed value deducted if you keep it.
- A redeemed promotional gift card may be deactivated or deducted.
- Rewards used to pay for the order may be credited back, while rewards earned from the returned purchase may be removed.
What condition must the computer be in?
Dell’s policy requires the product to be in original packaging and in as-new condition, with included media, documentation, accessories, and other items from the original shipment. Gather:
- Original box, inserts, and protective materials
- Power adapter, cable, dock, keyboard, mouse, stylus, and other accessories
- Documentation, media, license materials, and recovery items
- Promotional hardware included with the order
- Photos of the computer and packed box before handoff
- Carrier receipt and tracking information
If you lost the original box, contact Dell before shipping. Do not improvise packaging for an expensive computer without confirming that Dell will accept it and clarifying transit responsibility.

Defective, damaged, or incorrect computers
If the computer is defective
A computer that will not boot or function properly should generally go to Technical Support first rather than being mailed back as a buyer’s-remorse return. Use the service tag and ask whether Dell’s remedy is repair, warranty replacement, exchange, or a refund return.
A defect does not automatically guarantee a cash refund outside the applicable return window. Warranty service may continue after that window, but the remedy may be repair or replacement.
If the shipment is physically damaged
Before discarding the box, photograph the shipping carton, labels, packing materials, and computer. Dell’s exchange guidance asks for photos in damaged-box or damaged-product cases. Report the problem through Dell’s order tools and request an exchange or replacement.

If Dell sent the wrong computer
Compare the product with the order confirmation, invoice, and packing slip. Photograph the service tag and configuration, then request correction or exchange as a Dell-error shipment. Avoid upgrading, modifying, or reinstalling the system while the discrepancy is unresolved.

Can you cancel before delivery?
Try to cancel immediately through the order page. Dell Order Support says cancellation may be possible when the account displays “Cancel Order”, generally before production or packaging begins.
Once production has started or the order has shipped, ordinary cancellation is generally unavailable. You may need to accept delivery and use the eligible return process. Do not refuse delivery unless Dell specifically instructs you; refusal can complicate proof of return, tracking, and timing. Save a screenshot of any cancellation attempt.

Dell’s U.S. policy lists exclusions and special rules for categories including:
- Customized products and some build-to-order configurations
- APEX and Dell or non-Dell enterprise products, including servers, storage, data protection, converged, hyperconverged, and networking equipment
- Dell Wyse and Wyse-branded products
- Gift cards, except where required by law
- Non-Dell-branded software and volume-license software
- Products identified at purchase as not subject to a right of return
Software returns are limited. The policy describes narrow exceptions for certain installed operating systems or applications returned with an eligible computer, unopened physical media, and electronically delivered software whose license terms have not been accepted.
Customized computers
Dell lists customized products as nonreturnable under its U.S. policy. “Customized” can involve more than engraving; a nonstandard component selection or build-to-order configuration may receive different treatment from a standard retail configuration.

Changing the operating system
Dell warns that, on systems with an Intel eighth-generation or later CPU, removing the factory-installed operating system to install a non-Windows 11 operating system—such as Windows 10 or Windows XP—may affect refund-return eligibility and support coverage. This is Dell’s stated policy position, not a general legal rule. Where practical, restore the factory software image before requesting a return.

Dell warns that it is not responsible for confidential, proprietary, or personal information left on a returned product, or for lost or corrupted data and removable media.
- Back up files you need.
- Sign out of Microsoft, Google, Apple, Dell, password-manager, and other accounts.
- Disable device tracking and remove the computer from account dashboards where applicable.
- Remove USB drives, memory cards, and other removable media.
- Perform a secure factory reset or your organization’s approved data-erasure procedure.
- Photograph the service tag and serial information.
- Keep records of the reset, authorization, and tracking number.
When should the refund arrive?
Dell says a refund or credit may take 10–15 business days after Dell receives the returned order to reach the original payment method. That period is separate from authorization, carrier transit, inspection, and the payment provider’s posting time.
After tracking confirms delivery, monitor the original card, financing account, or payment method. If the credit has not appeared after Dell’s stated period, contact Order Support through the order page and provide the CRA number, tracking proof, delivery date, and case numbers.
Dell Refurbished is a separate channel
Dell Refurbished has its own terms and return process. Its pages describe a 30-day return period but may differ on shipping, store credit, restocking, RMA authorization, and defective-product treatment. Review the Dell Refurbished FAQ and Dell Refurbished Terms rather than applying the standard Dell.com policy automatically.
If Dell refuses, deducts, or delays the refund
- Ask Dell for the reason in writing.
- Ask which policy provision supports the refusal or deduction.
- Provide the invoice, CRA number, return authorization, tracking record, delivery confirmation, photos, and support case numbers.
- Ask whether Dell classified the purchase as consumer, business, customized, refurbished, enterprise, or another category.
- Escalate through Dell Order Support.
- If the stated refund period has passed, contact the card issuer or payment provider after documenting the merchant dispute and return evidence.
A payment dispute is not a substitute for Dell authorization, and you should not claim that a product was returned while it remains in your possession. Keep communications factual and retain copies of every submission.
Return-day checklist
- Confirm the seller was Dell, not a retailer or Dell Refurbished.
- Check the invoice date and applicable deadline.
- Check for customization, enterprise, software, gift-card, or commercial exclusions.
- Choose return, technical support, exchange, or cancellation based on the actual problem.
- Obtain Dell authorization and the CRA number when applicable.
- Back up and erase data.
- Include every accessory, promotional item, document, and piece of media.
- Use the Dell-provided label or instructions.
- Save photos, receipts, tracking, and delivery confirmation.
- Track the refund from the date Dell receives the computer.
These rules reflect Dell’s U.S. policies reviewed in August 2026. Country, product category, account type, promotion, and contract terms can produce a different result, so verify the live policy before shipping.
