Reliance Industries shares fell about 2.4% at the close on October 8, 2026, as India’s broader market also sold off. The decline coincided with Elon Musk’s allegation that unnamed business interests were obstructing Starlink, but the available reporting does not establish that the allegation was true or that the dispute alone caused Reliance’s share move.
How much did Reliance shares fall?
At the October 8, 2026 close, Reliance Industries fell 2.43% on the BSE to ₹1,177.30 and 2.45% on the NSE to ₹1,178, PTI reported. Its market valuation declined by ₹39,718 crore to ₹15,93,185.78 crore that day. These are historical closing figures, not a current quote. PTI

Was the satcom dispute the reason for the fall?
The timing linked the share move to a public dispute over satellite broadband regulation, but it does not prove causation. The wider market dropped sharply on October 8: the BSE Sensex lost 1,045.46 points, or 1.44%, to close at 71,593.24. PTI reported that Reliance contributed 164 points to the index decline. The market-wide selloff is important context; the reported figures do not show that the regulatory dispute was the sole cause of Reliance’s fall.
What did Musk allege, and what did the government say?
Musk’s allegation
On October 8, Musk accused unnamed “oligarchs” of blocking Starlink to preserve a monopoly. He later asked, “Is Ambani the real boss of India?” Reuters reported that Musk provided no evidence against Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani. The remarks are an allegation, not an established finding about regulatory influence. Reuters

The government’s response
India’s telecommunications ministry said the suggestion that the regulatory framework or its application was unfair or discriminatory was “baseless and misconceived,” Reuters reported on October 8. That is the ministry’s position, not an independent adjudication of Musk’s claim.
On October 9, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said: “India does not allow a monopoly in any sector,” Reuters reported. The cited reports did not include a named comment from Reliance responding to Musk’s remarks.

Could Starlink launch commercially in India?
A licence did not mean Starlink could immediately begin commercial service. Reuters reported that Starlink still had to meet security-compliance conditions and receive a spectrum assignment before launch. PTI likewise reported that security assessments and spectrum-related approvals remained outstanding. Reuters

Why the dispute matters to investors
Satellite broadband is a potential growth market, but regulatory progress and commercial launch are distinct milestones. Reuters cited a Deloitte forecast that India’s satellite broadband market could be worth $1.9 billion by 2030; that is a forecast, not a measured market value today. Reuters also described India as having more than a billion internet users, a reported market context rather than a newly verified official subscriber statistic.
For investors assessing the October 8 move, separate the observable stock and index data from the competing claims about approvals. The closing prices document what happened in that session; the ministry’s statement and Musk’s remarks represent opposing positions; neither establishes why individual investors traded Reliance shares that day.
