The discount applied to the two-year Proton VPN Plus plan, advertised at an effective $2.99 per month and billed as $71.76 upfront. It did not apply to every Proton VPN membership plan, and the 2024 promotion has expired.

What the 70% Proton VPN discount actually covered
Proton’s 2024 promotion offered up to 70% off, but the headline figure referred specifically to VPN Plus purchased for two years. The reported U.S. price was $2.99 per month when averaged across the term, with the full two-year cost charged upfront.
Contemporary reports from TechRadar and Tom’s Guide described the promotion in late November and early December 2024. Proton also promoted savings of “up to 70%” for new and existing users in a November 2024 announcement.

How the 70% calculation worked
The two-year promotion was compared with Proton VPN’s reported regular month-to-month price of $9.99:
- Regular-rate comparison: $9.99 × 24 months = $239.76.
- Promotional two-year price: $71.76 upfront.
- Difference: $239.76 − $71.76 = $168.
- Discount: $168 ÷ $239.76 ≈ 70%.
That calculation explains the headline, but it also creates an important qualification. The 70% figure was calculated against the monthly rate, not necessarily against the ordinary price of an equivalent two-year subscription. Also, $2.99 was an average monthly cost—not a recurring monthly payment. The reported charge was $71.76 at checkout.

When the offer was available
The promotion ran during the 2024 Black Friday shopping period:
- Black Friday: November 29, 2024.
- Cyber Monday: December 2, 2024.
- December 2 coverage: Reports said the Black Friday flash sale had ended, but the same 70%-off pricing remained available for Cyber Monday.
The offer is no longer available. Proton’s current Black Friday page says its seasonal deals return during the next Black Friday/Cyber Monday period. A current seasonal page should not be treated as proof of the exact 2024 checkout price.
What VPN Plus included in the 2024 coverage
Late-2024 coverage described Proton VPN Plus as including access to Proton’s paid VPN server network, streaming support, ad and malware blocking, and support for up to 10 devices on one subscription. Reports also referenced Proton’s privacy and security features and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

VPN Plus was not Proton Unlimited
The standalone VPN Plus promotion did not automatically include Proton’s other premium products. It was separate from Proton Unlimited, which bundles premium features for:
- Proton VPN
- Proton Mail
- Proton Drive
- Proton Calendar
- Proton Pass
Proton Unlimited was reported separately at an effective $6.49 per month for 12 months, with a reported 50% discount. It could have been better value for someone who would use encrypted email, cloud storage, password management, and calendar features. For someone seeking only a VPN, paying for the bundle could mean buying services they never use. See Proton’s ecosystem information for the bundle’s positioning.

Which option made the most financial sense?
Choose the two-year VPN Plus deal if:
- You were confident you would use Proton VPN for at least two years.
- You could comfortably pay $71.76 upfront.
- You wanted the lowest reported effective monthly cost among the listed VPN Plus options.
Choose the one-year VPN Plus plan if:
- You wanted a lower total commitment.
- You were uncertain whether you would continue using a paid VPN.
- You preferred not to prepay for two years even though the monthly-equivalent cost was higher.
Consider Proton Unlimited if:
- You already wanted several Proton services.
- The combined bundle would replace other paid email, storage, calendar, or password-management tools.
- You valued an integrated privacy ecosystem more than the cheapest standalone VPN.
Terms buyers needed to check
Upfront billing
The $2.99 figure did not mean Proton collected $2.99 each month. The reported two-year subscription required the full $71.76 payment upfront.
Renewal pricing
The promotional rate should not be assumed to continue after the initial prepaid term. Before paying, buyers should inspect the checkout and account-renewal terms. The available 2024 reporting does not establish a definitive renewal amount, so no precise renewal price should be inferred from the promotion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteExisting-customer eligibility
Proton advertised the promotion for both new and existing users, but eligibility could depend on the account, current plan, billing platform, and whether the customer was upgrading or extending an existing subscription. Existing subscribers should verify the offer inside their account rather than assume it can be applied to an active plan.
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Refund protection
Proton’s current promotional page states that paid plans have a 30-day money-back guarantee. That reduces the risk of trying the service, but it does not eliminate the need to understand the refund conditions or renewal terms.
Did every shopper need a paid VPN?
Not necessarily. A VPN can help protect traffic on public Wi-Fi, reduce the information visible to a local network operator, and change the apparent location of a connection. It does not make a person anonymous, prevent malware by itself, or replace strong passwords, multifactor authentication, software updates, and careful browsing.
Someone who needs occasional public-Wi-Fi protection may find a free plan sufficient, although free and paid capabilities differ. Proton’s current seasonal page continues to reference a free tier alongside paid plans.
Bottom line on the 2024 Proton VPN deal
The accurate version of the headline is: Proton VPN offered 70% off its two-year VPN Plus plan during its 2024 Black Friday/Cyber Monday promotion, reducing the reported cost to $2.99 per month equivalent, or $71.76 upfront.
The one-year VPN Plus plan was reported at $4.99 per month equivalent and 50% off. Proton Unlimited was a separate bundle with a different price and discount. The 2024 offer has expired; future shoppers should use Proton’s official seasonal deals page and confirm the total charge, renewal price, eligibility, and refund terms before purchasing.
