Prosper confirmed a cybersecurity incident in which unauthorized queries obtained data from databases containing customer and applicant information between June and August 2025. The company said it discovered the activity on September 1, 2025, and that potentially exposed information included Social Security or national ID numbers, dates of birth, bank-account details, credit-application data and other sensitive records.

The often-reported “17 million people” figure needs an important qualification: Prosper’s official notice does not confirm that 17 million individuals were affected. Secondary reporting described roughly 17.6 million unique email addresses associated with exposed data. That is not the same as 17.6 million confirmed people, Prosper customers or individuals whose Social Security numbers were exposed. Prosper also said it found no evidence that customer accounts or funds were accessed.

  • June–August 2025: Data was obtained through database queries, according to Prosper.
  • September 1, 2025: Prosper discovered unauthorized activity.
  • September 17, 2025: Prosper publicly announced the incident.
  • November 26, 2025: The company said its analysis of potentially affected data was complete.
  • December 9, 2025: Prosper began sending individual notifications.
  • March 31, 2026: The enrollment deadline shown in the sample notification for complimentary Experian services.
  • March 31, 2026: Prosper disclosed related litigation in an SEC filing.

Prosper’s official breach notice is the best source for the company’s account of the incident.

How many people were affected?

Prosper has not publicly stated an official total number of affected individuals in the breach notice reviewed for this article. Reports citing Have I Been Pwned data described approximately 17.6 million unique email addresses, but an email-address count is not a confirmed count of people or Prosper customers.

The figure may include applicants, former customers, noncustomers, stale addresses, duplicate records or people whose records contained only limited information. It also does not establish that every person associated with an email address had a Social Security number, bank-account number or other highly sensitive data exposed.

For that reason, these descriptions are inaccurate:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • “Prosper confirmed 17 million victims.”
  • “Seventeen million Prosper accounts were hacked.”
  • “Everyone’s Social Security number was stolen.”

A more accurate description is that Prosper confirmed a data-security incident, while secondary reporting linked roughly 17.6 million unique email addresses to exposed data.

What information may have been exposed?

Prosper said its analysis identified categories of information that may have included:

  • Name
  • Social Security number or national identification number
  • Date of birth
  • Bank-account number
  • Prosper account number
  • Financial or credit-application information
  • Driver’s-license number
  • Passport number
  • Tax information
  • Payment-card number
  • Marriage or birth certificate information

Not every affected person necessarily had every category exposed. The notification sent to an individual should identify, or help explain, what information Prosper associated with that person’s records.

Were Prosper accounts or money accessed?

Prosper said it found no evidence of unauthorized access to customer accounts or funds, and that customer-facing operations continued uninterrupted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That statement distinguishes three different risks:

  • Database exposure: Personal information was obtained from databases through unauthorized queries.
  • Direct account compromise: Prosper said there was no evidence that customer accounts or funds were accessed.
  • Identity-theft risk: Exposed identity and financial-application information could make phishing, fraudulent credit applications, account-takeover attempts or other impersonation scams more convincing.

No evidence that balances were accessed does not mean the exposed information is harmless. A credit freeze and account monitoring address different risks.

How can you tell whether you were affected?

Look for a mailed letter or email from Prosper describing the September 2025 cybersecurity incident. Because applicants and former customers may be included, do not assume that only current Prosper borrowers could receive a notice.

Verify unexpected communications independently. Do not click an unsolicited link or provide a Social Security number, password, one-time code or payment to someone claiming to represent Prosper, Experian, a law firm or a settlement administrator.

Prosper published 1-833-918-9464 as an incident call-center number. Confirm that the number remains active through Prosper’s official website or the contact details printed in your notice before using it. If you did not receive a notice, that does not prove either that you were affected or that you were not. Contact Prosper through an independently verified official channel rather than relying on a third-party breach-lookup site.

What affected consumers should do now

1. Freeze your credit with all three bureaus

A credit freeze is free and can prevent prospective creditors from accessing your credit report for most new-account applications. You must arrange freezes separately with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

A freeze is especially worth considering if your Social Security number or government ID may have been involved. You can temporarily lift it when applying for credit. It will not stop fraud involving existing bank accounts, payment cards, tax returns or phishing.

2. Consider a fraud alert

A fraud alert asks creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity. You can place one with any of the three bureaus, and that bureau must notify the other two. A standard fraud alert generally lasts one year. It is easier and less restrictive than a freeze, but it does not block access to your credit file.

The FTC’s freeze and fraud-alert guide explains the differences.

3. Check your credit reports

Use the official AnnualCreditReport.com service to review reports for:

  • Unfamiliar accounts or hard inquiries
  • Collection accounts you do not recognize
  • Unexpected address changes
  • Incorrect public-record information

Monitoring is detective, not preventive: a report can reveal a fraudulent account after it has already been opened.

4. Monitor bank and card accounts

Because bank-account and payment-card information appeared among the potentially involved categories, review statements and transaction alerts carefully. Contact your bank or card issuer immediately about suspicious activity. Ask the bank whether an account-number change or enhanced monitoring is appropriate; a credit freeze does not protect an existing deposit account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Change reused passwords and enable multifactor authentication

Do not reuse a Prosper password on another service. Change any reused password, particularly for email, banking, payment and credit accounts, and enable multifactor authentication wherever available. Protecting your email account is especially important because it can be used to reset other passwords.

6. Expect convincing phishing attempts

Scammers may use your name, loan details, application information or date of birth to make messages appear legitimate. Be suspicious of requests to:

  • Verify an account through an unexpected link
  • Read out a one-time security code
  • Pay a fee to file a breach or lawsuit claim
  • Enroll in “Experian” monitoring through an unsolicited page
  • Provide banking information to receive compensation

Navigate manually to official websites instead of using links in unexpected texts and emails.

7. Report suspected identity theft

If you find an unfamiliar account or believe your information is being misused, contact the financial institution involved, preserve letters, emails, statements and incident numbers, and use IdentityTheft.gov. The FTC’s identity-theft guidance provides additional recovery steps.

Is credit monitoring enough?

No. Monitoring may alert you to some new inquiries or accounts, but it generally does not prevent identity theft and may not detect tax fraud, medical identity theft, benefits fraud, account takeover or social-engineering scams.

  • Credit freeze: Restricts access to your credit file and is the stronger preventive measure for new-account fraud.
  • Fraud alert: Tells creditors to take extra verification steps but does not block access.
  • Identity restoration: Provides assistance after suspected misuse; it is not the same as prevention.

The most useful approach is layered protection: freeze or alert your credit as appropriate, review reports, monitor existing accounts, secure passwords and watch for impersonation.

What happened to Prosper’s free Experian offer?

Prosper said affected individuals would receive two years of complimentary credit monitoring and identity-restoration services through Experian. The sample notification set an enrollment deadline of March 31, 2026. That deadline has passed, so readers should not assume the incident-specific offer remains open.

Check your individual Prosper notice and contact Prosper through a verified official channel to ask whether an extension or replacement enrollment process exists. The incident-specific service should not be confused with Experian’s ordinary paid subscriptions. Do not pay anyone who promises access to a Prosper benefit.

Are there lawsuits or a settlement?

In its SEC filing for the quarter ended March 31, 2026, Prosper disclosed multiple purported class actions, state-court lawsuits and arbitration demands. The federal cases were consolidated as In re: Prosper Funding, LLC Data Breach Litigation.

The filing also said Prosper had not recorded an estimated loss for the incident as of that reporting date because the relevant accounting conditions were not met.

A lawsuit is not proof of liability, and the existence of litigation does not establish that consumers are entitled to compensation. Do not assume there is a settlement, claims deadline or payment program unless you receive a court-approved notice or verify the information through an official court source. Be wary of anyone demanding a fee to join a case or file a claim.

Prosper’s SEC filing, along with the company’s incident notice, provides the relevant public disclosures.
