Prometheus Fuels: Has the $1.5 Billion Startup Made Clean Fuel as Cheap as Gas?

Prometheus Fuels has reported meaningful progress since the skepticism surrounding it in 2022—but it has not publicly proved that it can produce certified fuel at commercial volumes, with independently audited economics, for a price comparable with gasoline or other fossil fuels.

The Santa Cruz, California, startup says it can use carbon dioxide from the air, water and renewable electricity to make methanol, diesel and jet fuel. Its current plans call for large methanol plants in 2028 and 2030. That is a much more cautious timetable than the early promise of selling carbon-neutral gasoline as soon as 2020.

The claim behind the valuation

Prometheus Fuels is a privately held climate-tech company founded and led by Rob McGinnis. It grew out of work involving water treatment, membranes, carbonate chemistry and electrochemical separation. The company describes itself not only as a synthetic-fuels producer but also as a way to store intermittent renewable electricity in liquid form.

In 2021, Prometheus attracted investment from BMW i Ventures, Maersk Growth, Y Combinator and others. MIT Technology Review reported in 2022 that the company had raised more than $50 million and reached a reported valuation above $1.5 billion. That was a private-company valuation, not a public-market capitalization or proof that the technology was commercially successful.

BMW’s 2020 announcement said Prometheus expected to sell carbon-neutral gasoline at competitive prices and begin as early as that year. Maersk later described the company’s technology as promising for cost-efficient, carbon-neutral e-fuels. Those statements explain why major companies were interested, but they were investor rationales and early expectations—not independent certifications of performance.

What Prometheus originally promised

The original proposition was unusually ambitious: capture carbon dioxide directly from ambient air, combine it with water and renewable electricity, and turn it into drop-in gasoline, diesel, methanol and jet fuel. The resulting products were intended to work with existing engines and fuel infrastructure.

Prometheus demonstrated an early system called the Maxwell Core, along with carbon-nanotube membranes and a modified Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The demonstration showed that the company could separate alcohol and water and produce fuel-related outputs. It did not, by itself, establish sustained commercial production or prove that the entire process could compete with petroleum after capital costs, maintenance, transport and financing.

The 2022 reporting also highlighted how quickly the timetable had changed. The 2020 BMW announcement referred to sales beginning as early as that year. Prometheus’ current website instead lists planned commercial projects with estimated completion dates of 2028 and 2030. A changed schedule does not prove that the technology failed, but it is an important test of the company’s earlier promises.

How the current process is supposed to work

Prometheus says its process differs from conventional power-to-liquid systems in several important ways:

  1. Capture from air: Carbon dioxide is absorbed into water, where it becomes carbonate and bicarbonate ions.
  2. No-Desorb DAC: Rather than extracting the carbon dioxide back out as a concentrated gas stream, the company says it sends the dissolved carbon species directly into its electrochemical system.
  3. Electrochemical conversion: Electricity is applied in a proprietary Faraday Reactor, which Prometheus says can produce methanol or longer-chain hydrocarbons.
  4. Fuel separation: The resulting fuel is separated from water.
  5. Renewable operation: The company says the system can be coupled directly to intermittent, off-grid solar electricity.

The company uses terms including “No-Desorb DAC,” “Faraday Reactor,” “Titan Forge,” e-methanol, e-kerosene and direct electrochemical fuel synthesis. Its January 2026 announcement described a hydrogen-free, fully electrochemical pathway to synthetic kerosene and diesel. Prometheus’ technical description is available here, and the January 2026 announcement is here.

The key distinction is that these are three different steps:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Carbon capture concentrates or removes carbon dioxide from air.
  • Fuel synthesis uses energy to rearrange that carbon into methanol or hydrocarbons.
  • Carbon neutrality requires the full life cycle—including electricity, equipment, materials, transport and combustion—to balance out.

Fuel is therefore not being made from air alone. It also requires substantial electricity, water, reactors, membranes, catalysts, pumps and other industrial infrastructure.

Why experts were skeptical in 2022

The central criticism in the 2022 investigation was not that the chemistry was impossible. It was that the public evidence did not establish whether the process could operate economically and reliably at the scale required for a commodity fuel business.

The concerns fell into four broad categories:

  • Limited disclosure: Outside researchers could not fully assess the operating data, cost model, energy use or complete material balance.
  • Electricity assumptions: The economics appeared sensitive to assumptions about the cost and availability of solar power.
  • Low yields in related research: Researchers familiar with electrochemical carbon conversion noted that comparable work had often produced low yields or required significant energy and processing.
  • Scale-up risk: A laboratory device or small demonstration is not the same as a plant producing thousands or millions of tonnes per year.

Technology Review quoted Eric McFarland of the University of California, Santa Barbara, expressing strong skepticism. It also reported that Sean McCoy of the University of Calgary considered the chemistry technically possible but questioned the likely yields based on related academic work. Those were assessments of the information available in 2022, not direct evaluations of Prometheus’ reported 2025–2026 pilot results.

This distinction matters. A process can be chemically feasible yet economically uncompetitive. It can also produce a convincing demonstration while still failing to achieve the uptime, durability, throughput and cost required for an industrial plant.

What Prometheus says it has achieved since 2022

Prometheus now reports several milestones that, if confirmed at the stated scope, represent progress beyond the evidence available when the 2022 investigation appeared.

A year of pilot operation

The company says its “Titan Forge Alpha” pilot completed one year of direct-air-capture-to-methanol operation. It also says an external laboratory, AmSpec, confirmed methanol purity of 99.99 percent.

That reported laboratory result is relevant to product quality, but it does not answer the larger economic questions. Purity is different from yield, energy efficiency, production rate, equipment life and cost per tonne. The underlying laboratory report and the complete operating data would be needed to independently evaluate the claim.

A larger electrochemical reactor

Prometheus says it installed a 50-cell commercial-scale Faraday Reactor and demonstrated kerosene production in five full-size reactor cells. It also says the system operated with direct coupling to off-grid solar power.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 50-cell reactor is more informative than a single laboratory cell, but “commercial-scale” should not be confused with a commercial plant. A reactor can be large enough to test industrial design principles while still producing only a small fraction of the output needed for a commodity business. The decisive evidence would include sustained operation, cell-by-cell performance, degradation, maintenance and plant-level output.

Engineering reviews

Prometheus says engineering reviews commissioned by Ramboll and Maersk’s DeepSense observed methanol and kerosene production and reviewed pilot data. That is potentially important third-party involvement, but the scope matters. An engineering review of selected pilot data is not necessarily an independent audit of costs, life-cycle emissions, commercial throughput or bankable project economics.

Readers should ask whether the reviews covered raw operating data, whether the reviewers had access to the full process, whether results were independently reproduced and whether the reports assessed economics or only technical operation.

Vehicle demonstrations and intellectual property

The company also says it demonstrated a vehicle and a car powered by fuel made from air and renewable electricity, and that it has filed or obtained protection across 10 patent families. These facts may show that a fuel can be used in an engine or that Prometheus has defensible intellectual property. They do not establish low cost, commercial supply, aviation certification or environmental superiority.

What still has not been publicly demonstrated

The most important unanswered questions concern the complete commercial chain:

  • Continuous operation at commercial throughput.
  • Independently audited mass and energy balances.
  • Independently audited cost per gallon or tonne.
  • Complete life-cycle greenhouse-gas accounting.
  • Long-term durability of electrodes, membranes, catalysts and separators.
  • Full product yields, including by-products, waste streams and losses.
  • Water, electrolyte and mineral requirements.
  • Real-world commercial fuel deliveries.
  • Regulatory approvals and aviation certification.
  • Construction permits, financing and procurement for planned plants.
  • Commercial uptime and maintenance requirements.
  • Independent confirmation of binding customer contracts.

Prometheus says it plans to apply for a new pathway annex under ASTM D7566 for jet fuel. That wording indicates the proposed aviation pathway is not yet equivalent to fully approved, unrestricted commercial sustainable aviation fuel on the evidence available here.

What does “as cheap as gas” actually mean?

The phrase can conceal several very different comparisons. It may refer to the cost of raw energy, factory-gate production cost, wholesale commodity price, or retail gasoline at a filling station. Those figures are not interchangeable.

Prometheus currently says its fuels can be competitive with commodity fossil-fuel prices when made with low-cost, off-grid solar. That is narrower than a promise that finished fuel will cost less than gasoline for consumers in every market.

Cost question Why it matters
What is the electricity price? Electricity is a major input, and low-cost off-grid solar may not be available everywhere.
What is the capacity factor? Intermittent solar can reduce utilization of expensive equipment unless the system is designed for cycling or paired with storage.
What is included in capital cost? Reactors, capture equipment, solar generation, water systems, buildings and fuel upgrading all affect the final cost.
Are financing and depreciation included? A fuel can look cheap on an operating-cost basis while remaining expensive after paying for the plant.
Are subsidies or carbon credits included? Tax credits and policy incentives can materially change the economics without representing an unsubsidized market price.
Are transport, storage and taxes included? Factory-gate fuel is not the same as wholesale fuel or the price at a filling station.
What are the yields and replacement costs? Low conversion yields, membrane replacement and maintenance can dominate the economics at scale.

A credible comparison should state dollars per gallon or tonne, the fuel’s lower heating value, electricity price, plant capacity factor, capital cost, financing assumptions, maintenance, replacement schedule, policy support, transport and product yield. Without those inputs, “competitive with gas” is a slogan rather than a reproducible price claim.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Car Hydrogen and Oxygen Power Generation Clean Energy Vehicle Model High-Tech Teaching Instruments
  • The Hydrogen fuel trolley uses zinc particles and food grade citric acid to synthesize hydrogen, and then uses the produced hydrogen and air to generate electricity to drive the trolley.
  • During the experiment, please use 80℃ hot water for Combination reaction (if the water temperature is low, the amount of hydrogen and air pressure from the Combination reaction are insufficient, the fuel cell cannot be used for power generation), and then take off the plug of the vent pipe at the lower part of the fuel cell, release the gas in the rubber hose immediately, and then plug it back immediately, so that only pure hydrogen and air are in the fuel cell, so that the fuel cell can generate hydrogen air power.

Is the fuel really carbon-neutral?

Using atmospheric carbon dioxide as the feedstock could allow the carbon released during combustion to be part of a closed loop. Renewable electricity could also reduce process emissions. But “carbon-neutral fuel” does not mean zero-emission transportation.

Combustion still produces carbon dioxide at the tailpipe, along with nitrogen oxides, particulates and other pollutants. The climate claim depends on whether the same amount of carbon was recently captured from the atmosphere and whether emissions from the entire system are included.

A full assessment would need to account for:

  • Energy used to capture dilute atmospheric carbon dioxide.
  • Manufacturing solar equipment, reactors, membranes, pumps and other components.
  • Plant construction and fuel transport.
  • Water and material consumption.
  • Carbon losses and incomplete conversion.
  • Electricity used when solar output is insufficient.
  • Combustion emissions and non-carbon pollutants.

The claim is therefore better described as potentially low-carbon or carbon-neutral under a defined life-cycle boundary and electricity source—not automatically zero-emission.

Why the technology could still matter

Even if Prometheus does not replace gasoline across the economy, liquid fuels made with electricity and atmospheric carbon could have strategic value in sectors that are difficult to electrify.

Aviation is an obvious target because batteries are heavy and aircraft need energy-dense fuels. Shipping, remote military logistics, backup power and some data-center applications may also value liquid fuels that can be stored and transported using existing infrastructure.

The case is weaker for ordinary passenger cars, where battery-electric drivetrains generally use electricity more directly instead of first converting it into a liquid fuel and then burning it in an engine. Prometheus’ long-duration storage proposition may nevertheless be relevant in locations with abundant renewable power but limited grid access.

The company’s claimed advantages—using carbonate chemistry, avoiding carbon-dioxide desorption, eliminating hydrogen and operating directly from intermittent solar—could reduce complexity if they work at the required scale. Each claimed simplification still has to be evaluated against actual energy efficiency, throughput, durability and balance-of-plant costs.

What the planned plants prove—and do not prove

Prometheus lists two planned commercial projects:

  • Project Lodestone: planned production of 100,000 metric tonnes of methanol per year, with estimated completion in 2028.
  • Project Lodestar: planned production of 1 million metric tonnes of methanol per year, with estimated completion in 2030.

The company says both projects are pre-sold for 10 years, representing 11 million tonnes of fuel and more than $8 billion at current commodity-market prices.

Those are forward-looking company statements. “Pre-sold” could mean binding offtake contracts, conditional agreements, memoranda or nonbinding reservations. The financial significance depends on the contract terms, customer creditworthiness, price formula, delivery conditions and cancellation rights. The available evidence does not independently confirm construction progress, financing terms, signed contracts or delivered commercial fuel.

Likewise, a project announcement does not prove that a plant has reached final investment decision, secured permits, ordered equipment or begun construction. Those are the milestones that separate a proposed project from an operating commercial asset.

How investors should interpret BMW and Maersk’s involvement

Investment from BMW i Ventures and Maersk Growth shows that sophisticated companies believed Prometheus was worth investigating. It may also provide industry access, engineering expertise and potential customers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It does not prove commercial viability, regulatory approval, fuel quality at scale, customer delivery or investor returns. Strategic investors can back high-risk technologies because the potential upside is large, because they want to learn about an emerging market or because the investment is small relative to the value of that option.

The reported $1.5 billion valuation should therefore be treated as a historical private financing signal, not as evidence that the company’s fuel is worth $1.5 billion in operating assets or that investors have validated its cost claims.

The evidence standard for a commercial verdict

Prometheus’ claims become substantially more credible when the company or independent parties publish evidence in five areas:

  1. Technical: Complete mass and energy balances, product yields, cell-level data, uptime and degradation over long operating periods.
  2. Economic: Fully loaded cost per tonne or gallon, including capital, financing, maintenance, replacement, transport and policy support.
  3. Environmental: A transparent life-cycle assessment showing the electricity source, equipment emissions, water use and carbon losses.
  4. Commercial: Permits, financing, construction milestones, delivered volumes, invoices and independently confirmed offtake agreements.
  5. Regulatory: Applicable fuel specifications and aviation approvals, particularly for any product marketed as sustainable aviation fuel.

Until those pieces are public, the fairest description is that Prometheus has moved from an intriguing demonstration toward a more substantial pilot program, but remains unproven as a commodity-fuel producer.

Verdict

Prometheus is a real startup with credible strategic investors, a technically distinctive process and a more developed set of claims than it had in 2022. Its reported year-long pilot, 50-cell reactor, methanol testing, engineering reviews and e-kerosene work deserve attention.

But the central promise remains unresolved. The available evidence does not yet show sustained commercial output, independently audited economics, certified aviation fuel, delivered volumes or fossil-fuel-equivalent prices after all costs are included. The company may ultimately prove that its process works in a valuable niche; it has not yet publicly proved that it can make fuel as cheaply as gas at industrial scale.
