The offer was real, but it is no longer available. PayPal and Venmo users could claim early access to Perplexity’s Comet browser and a complimentary 12-month Perplexity Pro subscription, advertised at a $200 value. The promotion expired on December 31, 2025.
Which apps qualified?
The two apps were PayPal and Venmo. PayPal announced the partnership with Perplexity on September 3, 2025, promoting the deal through its subscriptions hub and the Venmo app. It was not enough simply to have either app installed. (PayPal announcement)

What the promotion included
Eligible customers received two related benefits:
- Early access to Comet, Perplexity’s AI-powered browser, allowing users to bypass the normal waitlist at launch.
- A complimentary 12-month Perplexity Pro trial, which PayPal described as worth $200 in September 2025.
Comet was marketed as a browser with an integrated AI assistant, answer-focused search, search-result summaries, and product comparisons. Reporting also described features for asking about page contents and taking certain actions with permission; those capabilities depended on the product’s permissions and configuration. (Engadget)
This was temporary access—not permanent ownership of Comet or a lifetime Perplexity Pro plan.

Who was eligible?
The original terms and launch reporting described several restrictions:
- The customer had to be a first-time Perplexity Pro user. Existing Pro subscribers were excluded under the stated promotion.
- The PayPal or Venmo account generally had to have been created by September 1, 2025.
- The offer was limited to customers in the United States and selected international markets, not every country.
- Newer accounts could face a 30-day verification period under the promotion’s terms. That delay did not extend the final December 31 deadline.
- Launch reporting described a limit of one invite per PayPal account. Related Venmo terms also limited promotional use per account. (TechCrunch)
- The relevant PayPal or Venmo account had to remain in good standing where applicable.
Having both PayPal and Venmo did not necessarily mean receiving two benefits. The account and offer-specific limits controlled eligibility.

How redemption worked at launch
When the promotion was active, the general process was:
- Open the PayPal or Venmo app.
- Find the Perplexity promotion in the subscriptions hub or promotional area.
- Select the offer and begin activation.
- Sign in to an existing Perplexity account or create one.
- Complete enrollment for the 12-month Pro trial.
- Follow the resulting instructions to download or install Comet.
Menu names and placement could vary by app version, country, account, and rollout. Activating Perplexity Pro and installing Comet were separate steps, so a successful subscription activation did not necessarily make the browser appear automatically.

- Intel Processor Up to 2.80GHz, 4GB DDR4, 128GB Storage
- 15" FHD IPS Display, Intel UHD Graphics
- 1x USB Type C, 1 x USB Type A, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack, HDMI
- Fast WiFi and Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam
- Chrome OS, AC Charger Included, Pastel Silver
The renewal catch
“Free for a year” did not mean “free without a future charge.” The subscription was set to renew at the then-current Perplexity Pro rate unless the user canceled before the trial ended. The $200 figure was PayPal’s historical promotional valuation; it should not be treated as Perplexity’s current annual price.
Anyone who redeemed the offer should check their Perplexity account, payment settings, confirmation email, and active recurring subscriptions for the renewal date and billing method. If paid access is not wanted, cancel before renewal and keep a record of the confirmation. Do not assume that deleting Comet or uninstalling PayPal or Venmo cancels the subscription.

Why PayPal and Perplexity partnered
The arrangement benefited both companies. Perplexity gained a large distribution channel for Comet and its Pro subscription. PayPal gained attention for its subscriptions hub, which it was promoting as a way to view and manage recurring payments. The companies had also announced a separate partnership involving PayPal and AI-assisted commerce. (PayPal’s commerce announcement)

Opening PayPal or Venmo today will not recreate this promotion. The original offer expired on December 31, 2025, even if old headlines, screenshots, or search results still describe it as available.

- If you claimed it, check whether Perplexity Pro is still active and whether a paid renewal occurred.
- Review the renewal date and cancel unwanted recurring billing through the applicable account or payment settings.
- For new promotions, use Perplexity’s official website and help resources rather than relying on old invite codes.
- Be cautious with unofficial “free Comet” codes or referral claims. Perplexity says its Comet referral program concluded on November 6, 2025. (Perplexity Help Center)
Perplexity’s official site remains the appropriate place to check current products and offers: perplexity.ai. PayPal and Venmo were useful redemption channels for this specific 2025 promotion, but neither is worth opening solely to pursue an expired deal.
