Some longtime YouTube Premium subscribers are reportedly being moved off the legacy $7.99 monthly rate. However, the available evidence does not establish one universal U.S. effective date or guarantee that every affected subscriber will pay $13.99. Your Google email and the Purchases and memberships page are the sources of truth for your account.
The reported change concerns an older subscription price—not necessarily the Premium benefits themselves. Existing Premium features generally include ad-free viewing, background playback, offline downloads, and YouTube Music Premium access.

What is happening to the $7.99 YouTube Premium price?
Reports indicate that Google is phasing out some remaining grandfathered YouTube Premium memberships priced at $7.99 per month. A 2024 report described notices sent to some subscribers in Europe and said a U.S. rollout had not been confirmed at that time. A newer 2026 report says affected legacy subscribers are being notified and may be moved to the current individual-plan price.

Practical answer: if you still see a $7.99 recurring charge, check your account before assuming the price is ending—or assuming it will end on a particular date.
Where did the $7.99 rate come from?
The discounted rate is associated with older YouTube and Google music products, including Music Key, Google Play Music, and early YouTube Red subscriptions. YouTube Premium became the current branding in 2018. Some subscribers who moved through those services were allowed to retain an older price as long as their membership remained active.
Not every $7.99 subscriber necessarily came through the same product. Eligibility may depend on the account’s historical plan, country, billing provider, promotions, and whether membership remained continuous. The 2024 reporting specifically identified original Music Key subscribers as one relevant group; it did not establish that every subscriber paying $7.99 has the same history.

You may be part of the legacy group if you:
- Are still being charged $7.99 for an individual YouTube Premium membership;
- Subscribed many years ago through Music Key, Google Play Music, YouTube Red, or a related migration;
- Kept the membership active without canceling or allowing service to lapse; or
- Have not changed to a different plan or billing arrangement.
Do not automatically assume the reports apply to you if you have:
- A family, student, or annual plan;
- A recently created individual membership already priced at the standard rate;
- A $7.99 charge for a different Google or YouTube product;
- An account that was canceled and later recreated; or
- Billing handled through Apple or another platform.
The 2026 report says cancellation, a plan change, or a lapse in service can remove legacy pricing. Google’s official help pages do not promise that the old rate can be recovered, so treat that discounted price as potentially non-transferable.

Has Google announced a universal end date?
No universal U.S. or worldwide date is established by the available evidence.
| Market | Evidence status | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Europe | A 2024 report described notices to some subscribers. | Check the notice and membership page for your account. |
| United States | The searched evidence does not establish a universal rollout date. | Treat an individual Google notice as authoritative. |
| Other markets | The available sources do not establish timing. | Check local membership details and billing information. |
Google’s 30-day notice rule is a general policy, not proof that every remaining $7.99 account has already received a price increase. Timing may differ by country, account, billing cycle, payment method, taxes, and platform.

What price will replace $7.99?
The newer report identifies $13.99 per month as the expected U.S. standard individual price for many affected subscribers. That figure should not be treated as guaranteed for every account. Your notice and checkout screen may show a different amount because of location, taxes, currency, plan type, or Apple billing.
If your account actually changes from $7.99 to $13.99:
- You would pay $6 more per month.
- That equals $72 more per year before taxes.
- The base-price increase would be 75%.
Those calculations are conditional. They describe a $7.99-to-$13.99 change, not a confirmed universal price for all subscribers.

How to check whether your account is affected
- Sign in to the Google account used for YouTube Premium.
- Open YouTube’s Purchases and memberships page.
- Select the YouTube Premium membership.
- Review the membership type, current price, next billing date, upcoming charge, and any price-change message.
- Search the account’s email for messages from YouTube or Google using terms such as “YouTube Premium,” “membership price,” “price change,” “billing,” or “Purchases and memberships.”
- Review receipts and historical charges at Google Payments.
YouTube’s help documentation says the membership details page displays the plan type and price, with expanded details showing the next billing date and price-related information. A bank statement alone is not enough: a $7.99 descriptor could reflect another subscription, a tax treatment, or an outdated billing label.

An Apple-billed membership must be managed through Apple rather than directly through YouTube. The renewal price, billing date, cancellation path, and available plan choices may differ from those for a Google-billed membership. Do not assume that the price shown in a Google article or on a direct YouTube checkout page applies to an Apple subscription. See YouTube’s billing guidance.
Do not cancel just to test the discount
There is no verified workaround for preserving the legacy price. Canceling and resubscribing should not be expected to restore it. The 2026 secondary report says a cancellation, plan change, or lapse may end legacy eligibility, while Google does not promise that the old rate can be recovered.
Pausing can also have consequences: Google says the new price applies when a paused membership resumes. A country change, payment-profile change, tax adjustment, or billing-platform change can also affect the final amount.

What to do after a price increase
Keep the individual Premium plan
Keeping Premium may still make sense if you regularly use ad-free YouTube, background playback, offline downloads, and YouTube Music. There is no mainstream replacement that fully duplicates the entire combination of YouTube video and music benefits. Check the actual new amount at YouTube Premium before deciding.
Consider a family plan only for a genuinely eligible household
A family plan may provide better value when multiple eligible household members would otherwise pay for separate memberships. It is usually a poor choice for a single user because the total price may be higher. Confirm current pricing, household rules, and eligibility on the live YouTube offer page; those details vary by market.
Check the student plan if you qualify
Eligible students may be able to reduce the cost, but verification and continued eligibility are required. It is not a universal replacement for the grandfathered price. Confirm the current offer and verification requirements before changing plans.
Evaluate the annual plan carefully
Google documents an annual YouTube Premium plan in the United States and several other markets. It is prepaid, non-recurring, and for individual users. See the annual-plan rules and signup page.
An annual plan can suit someone certain they will use Premium for a full year, but it is less flexible than monthly billing. Current subscribers may need to cancel before switching, which is particularly important for anyone who could otherwise retain a legacy rate temporarily. Check eligibility and the live annual price before canceling anything.

Replace only the music component
If you mainly use Premium for music and can tolerate ads on ordinary YouTube videos, a separate music service such as Spotify, Apple Music, or Amazon Music may be worth comparing.
That is only a partial substitute. It will not reproduce ad-free YouTube video, YouTube-specific background playback, or YouTube offline downloads. Compare the benefits you actually use, not just the monthly sticker price.
Use free YouTube
Free, ad-supported YouTube is the lowest-cost option. It may suit occasional viewers who do not need offline downloads or background playback. Heavy mobile users and people who listen while their phone is locked are likely to notice the lost Premium features most.
A simple decision checklist
- Verify: What exact amount and date does your membership page show?
- Identify: Is the plan individual, family, student, annual, or Music Premium rather than full Premium?
- Audit usage: How often do you use ad-free viewing, downloads, background play, and YouTube Music?
- Check alternatives: Could an eligible household plan or student plan fit?
- Consider commitment: Would annual prepaid billing create a cash-flow or flexibility problem?
- Protect the legacy rate: Do not cancel or switch before understanding the displayed terms.
- Compare the real total: Include taxes and any difference caused by Apple or another billing provider.
The bottom line
Google appears to be ending at least some longtime subscribers’ $7.99 YouTube Premium pricing, but the evidence does not prove a single U.S. deadline or a guaranteed $13.99 replacement for everyone. Check Purchases and memberships, your Google or Apple billing record, and the price-change email. Those account-specific details matter more than a generalized headline—and canceling or changing plans may permanently end a legacy rate you still have.
