Nvidia shares rose in 20 of the 27 calendar fourth quarters from 1999 through 2025, measured from the end of September to the end of December. The median return across all 27 periods was about 14%, according to a 2026 analysis by The Motley Fool. That is a notable historical tendency, not a reliable forecast: Nvidia also rose in 20 of 26 first quarters from 2000 through 2025, suggesting the fourth-quarter result may reflect a broader long-term uptrend rather than a unique seasonal advantage.
What the fourth-quarter record actually shows
The historical count is straightforward: Nvidia finished higher in 20 of 27 calendar fourth quarters between 1999 and 2025. Seven quarters were negative, and the median result for the full period was approximately 14%.

Those figures describe what happened after each September quarter-end; they do not estimate the probability or size of Nvidia’s next move. The sample spans the dot-com crash, the cryptocurrency-related inventory correction, multiple semiconductor cycles and the recent artificial-intelligence boom. Market structure, earnings expectations and valuation changed substantially across those periods.

| Measure | Historical result | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Positive Q4 periods | 20 of 27 | Calendar Q4, end of September to end of December, 1999–2025 |
| Negative Q4 periods | 7 of 27 | Same measurement window |
| Median Q4 change | About 14% | Median across all 27 periods |
| Positive first-quarter periods | 20 of 26 | Calendar Q1, 2000–2025 |
The matching first-quarter record matters. If Nvidia tends to rise in many parts of the calendar, labeling Q4 as a special seasonal trade can overstate what the data proves. A historical tendency can be useful context, but it is not an investment thesis by itself.

Why Nvidia’s fiscal calendar makes Q4 different from a normal quarter
Nvidia’s fiscal year ends in late January, so its fiscal third quarter closes in late October rather than at the end of September. The company generally reports that quarter in mid-to-late November. That release includes management’s outlook for fiscal Q4, which covers roughly November through January.
For investors, the practical Q4 catalyst is therefore the November earnings announcement and its forward guidance—not simply the calendar changing to October. The market may react more strongly to the expected sales and margins in the following fiscal quarter than to results from the quarter that has just ended.

Two quarters when the pattern failed badly
2000: a market-wide shock
Nvidia fell about 60% in the fourth quarter of 2000, one of the two losses greater than 50% in the 27-quarter record. The Nasdaq Composite dropped roughly one-third as the dot-com crash spread through technology stocks. A strong company-specific story could not insulate the shares from a broad repricing of risk.
2018: guidance and inventory overwhelmed seasonality
In 2018, Nvidia’s fiscal-fourth-quarter revenue forecast was about 15% below the revenue it had just reported. The stock fell about 19% the day after the announcement and finished the calendar quarter down approximately 52%.

The problem included excess inventory in cryptocurrency-related sales channels. In the earnings release quoted by The Motley Fool, CEO Jensen Huang said: “Our near-term results reflect excess channel inventory post the cryptocurrency boom, which will be corrected.” The episode shows why a favorable calendar cannot compensate for a sharp forecast reduction or a sudden change in end-market demand.
How current growth changes the question
Nvidia’s recent operating figures provide a much stronger immediate driver than seasonality. Fiscal Q2 2027 revenue was reported at $96.2 billion, up 106% from the prior-year quarter. Management guided fiscal Q3 revenue to $108.0 billion, plus or minus 2%. At the midpoint, that implies approximately 89% year-over-year growth versus the comparable prior-year quarter.

Such growth can support a high valuation, but it also raises the bar for future reports. When expectations are elevated, a company can post excellent absolute results and still see its stock fall if growth slows, margins disappoint or guidance fails to exceed the consensus already embedded in the price.

The cited 2026 analysis placed Nvidia at about 15 times consensus fiscal-2028 earnings and Broadcom at roughly 19 times its next-fiscal-year consensus earnings estimate. These are time-sensitive market multiples, not fixed company characteristics; they should be refreshed using current prices and analyst estimates before an investment decision.

A lower forward multiple does not automatically make a stock safer or cheaper in economic terms. Investors must test whether the earnings estimates are achievable, how dependent growth is on a small group of hyperscale customers, and how each company might respond to an AI-spending slowdown or a broad Nasdaq drawdown.

- Check the starting valuation. Use the current share price and updated consensus fiscal-year estimates rather than an old published multiple.
- Read the November report for the forward guide. Compare fiscal-Q4 revenue, margin and operating-expense guidance with the consensus immediately before the release.
- Test demand durability. Look for continued data-center investment, customer concentration risks and signs that deployments are being delayed.
- Review supply and product transitions. Availability constraints can limit sales, while a transition to new products can create temporary inventory or margin pressure.
- Stress-test the market backdrop. A Nasdaq sell-off, higher interest rates or a retreat from high-growth technology can overwhelm company-specific execution, as 2000 demonstrated.
- Separate a trading pattern from a portfolio decision. Decide what level of growth, valuation and downside risk fits your time horizon instead of buying solely because 20 of 27 Q4 periods were positive.
What the historical evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The 20-of-27 record supports the statement that Nvidia has usually risen in the fourth quarter over this historical window. It does not establish that Q4 has a dependable edge after transaction costs, taxes, changing expectations or different market regimes. The seven losing periods include two catastrophic declines, so the average experience conceals meaningful downside risk.
For a current investor, the useful takeaway is narrower: treat Q4 seasonality as background context, then focus on the mid-November earnings report, forward guidance, demand evidence, macro conditions and a valuation based on refreshed estimates. Those factors determine whether the next quarter’s setup is attractive; the calendar statistic alone does not.
