zkSync and Starknet are taking opposite routes through Ethereum’s quantum-security deadline. zkSync is trying to make Ethereum cheaper to verify with a faster prover while building private infrastructure for banks. Starknet is considering leaving the rollup model and becoming an independent Layer 1 so it can set its own timetable, including a proposed full-quantum-resistance target in 2027.
The strategic split matters to anyone holding either network’s assets or relying on them for transactions: zkSync remains tied to Ethereum’s roadmap and settlement, while an independent Starknet would assume more control—and more responsibility—for bridges, data availability and security.

What changed in Ethereum’s quantum race
Ethereum’s cited objective is quantum resistance across its execution, consensus and data layers by December 2029. The Ethereum Foundation roadmap describes that schedule as aggressive. The deadline is not a guarantee that every component will be upgraded on that date; it is a target for a broad, multi-layer migration.
Against that backdrop, zkSync is emphasizing proving performance and regulated use cases. Starknet is evaluating whether remaining an Ethereum Layer 2 gives it enough control over the cryptographic changes it may need to make.

What does zkSync’s prover milestone mean for Ethereum?
Airbender Prime’s reported benchmark
Matter Labs reported that Airbender Prime processed 99% of 7,200 consecutive Ethereum mainnet blocks in under 10 seconds per block on one NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPU. In the same report, every block completed in under 12 seconds when witness preparation was included. CryptoSlate reported the figures in 2026.
A prover converts transaction history into a cryptographic proof that another system can verify. Faster proving can reduce the delay before a rollup posts an accepted state to Ethereum and can make higher transaction volumes easier to support. The benchmark therefore addresses a practical bottleneck: how quickly a scaling network can keep pace with Ethereum’s block production.
What the number does not prove
- It does not establish a production cost per transaction or a final user fee.
- It does not show that ordinary consumer hardware will reproduce the result; the test used a specific workstation-class GPU, and no purchase price or hardware-cost model was published with the figure.
- It does not by itself demonstrate quantum resistance. Proving speed and post-quantum cryptography are separate engineering questions.
For users, the milestone is best read as evidence that zkSync is working on throughput and verification latency, not as a finished answer to Ethereum’s quantum migration.

Why is zkSync courting banks?
Prividium’s intended role
Matter Labs’ Prividium is aimed at private institutional execution while retaining direct settlement to Ethereum. Its stated design also includes atomic transfers between private chains, allowing an exchange of assets to complete as one operation rather than leaving one side exposed to settlement risk.
Deutsche Bundesbank is reported to be testing Prividium’s open-source permissioning engine. That test indicates interest in the system’s access-control layer, but it is not evidence that a commercial deployment or recurring revenue contract has been signed.
How large is the claimed bank network?
zkSync materials, as reported by CryptoSlate in 2026, describe five founding U.S. regional-bank partners with more than $8 trillion in combined assets. A separate zkSync-hosted summary claims more than 30 institutions representing over $10 trillion in combined assets. Both figures are company-reported counts and asset totals, not independently verified revenue or transaction data.
The distinction matters for personal-finance readers. A bank having a large balance sheet does not mean that customer deposits, payments or investment products are already running on Prividium. The commercial value will depend on live transaction volume, pricing and whether institutions continue using the network after pilots.

Why is Starknet considering becoming an independent Layer 1?
Control over the quantum timetable
Starknet is considering an independent Layer 1 with a proposed full-quantum-resistance target in 2027, ahead of Ethereum’s December 2029 target. The proposal still requires governance approval and substantial engineering work, so the date is a goal rather than a committed launch deadline.
Leaving the rollup model would let Starknet choose its own consensus, execution and cryptographic upgrade schedule. It would also mean taking direct responsibility for the security and availability surfaces that Ethereum currently provides or anchors for a Layer 2.
The trade-off in an “exit”
An independent chain could move faster when quantum-resistant signatures or proof systems change. The cost is reduced dependence on Ethereum’s established settlement and a larger set of systems to operate and secure. Bridges connecting an independent Starknet to Ethereum would become a design and risk decision under Starknet’s control rather than simply an extension of Ethereum’s rollup architecture.

| Issue | zkSync’s direction | Starknet’s proposed direction |
|---|---|---|
| Quantum-security timing | Works within Ethereum’s cited December 2029 target | Full-quantum-resistance target in 2027, subject to governance and engineering |
| Relationship with Ethereum | Continues as an Ethereum scaling network with Ethereum settlement | Considering an independent Layer 1 rather than remaining dependent on Ethereum for the full stack |
| Proving evidence | Airbender Prime completed 99% of 7,200 consecutive mainnet blocks in under 10 seconds each on one RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPU; all were under 12 seconds including witness preparation | No comparable proving benchmark is provided in the cited reports |
| Institutional strategy | Prividium targets private execution, Ethereum settlement and atomic private-chain transfers; zkSync materials cite five founding U.S. regional banks and more than 30 institutions across separate claims | The cited announcement focuses on technical independence and quantum control, not a comparable institution count |
| Commercial evidence | Private-interoperability fees are unfinished, and no published fee model links Prividium usage to demand for the ZK token | No recurring-revenue model is established in the cited announcement |
Can private bank deployments produce sustainable revenue?
That remains unproven. Prividium’s potential revenue would depend on fees for private execution, interoperability, settlement or permissioning. The available information says private-interoperability fees are unfinished, and it provides no published mechanism connecting Prividium activity to ZK-token demand.

Investors should separate three milestones: a technical pilot, a production deployment and a repeatable fee stream. The reported Bundesbank testing and bank-partner counts address interest and experimentation; they do not establish how much customers will pay, how often they will transact or how revenue would accrue to token holders.
What users and investors should watch next
- Ethereum’s post-quantum specifications: whether the December 2029 objective becomes concrete upgrade proposals across execution, consensus and data layers.
- Starknet governance: whether stakeholders approve an independent Layer 1 and publish an implementable 2027 migration plan.
- Production proving data: whether Airbender’s benchmark persists across different hardware, workloads and sustained operation, with operating costs disclosed.
- Prividium economics: published fee schedules, production customers, transaction volumes and a clear explanation of any relationship to the ZK token.
- Bridge and data-availability design: how an independent Starknet would secure connections to Ethereum and protect users during upgrades or outages.
Until those details emerge, zkSync offers a performance-and-institutional adoption thesis tied to Ethereum, while Starknet offers a governance-dependent independence thesis aimed at earlier quantum control. Neither set of announcements is proof of future token returns.
