Nifty Futures Trading FAQs: Margin, Expiry and Settlement Rules for Indian Traders (2026)

Short answer: Nifty 50 futures are standardized NSE index-futures contracts available in three consecutive monthly maturities. The near, next and far contracts expire on the last Tuesday of their expiry month, or the preceding trading day when that Tuesday is a holiday. Your upfront margin is calculated dynamically through NSE Clearing’s SPAN risk system rather than set at one permanent rupee amount. On expiry day, index-futures positions lose the usual calendar-spread benefit for extreme-loss margin, so a broker’s displayed requirement can change sharply. Check the active NSE contract file, current risk parameters and your broker’s estimate before placing an order; the exact daily and final settlement formulas must be confirmed in the latest NSE Clearing rules.

What a Nifty 50 futures contract represents

A Nifty 50 futures contract is an exchange-traded index-futures instrument identified by NSE as FUTIDX on the NIFTY 50 index. It gives a buyer and seller a standardized obligation linked to the index level for a specified expiry month. The contract trades from its introduction until expiry; it is not an open-ended position that continues indefinitely.

“Nifty futures” is often used casually for several Nifty-family indices. Use Nifty 50 futures when you mean the contract on the NIFTY 50 index, because the index, contract specifications, expiry calendar and risk parameters can differ across products. The rules below concern the NIFTY 50 index-futures contract on NSE.

The exchange sets the contract’s specifications, while NSE Clearing calculates collateral requirements and settlement obligations. A broker may present an intraday or overnight margin number in its order window, but that display is an estimate for the position and conditions you are entering. It is not a replacement for the exchange’s current contract and risk files.

Which Nifty futures months are available?

NSE describes a maximum three-month cycle. At any point, the listed monthly maturities are the near month, the next month and the far month. The near month is the first expiry in the sequence; the other two follow it in consecutive months.

Contract label What it means What to check before trading
Near month The earliest listed expiry Days remaining, current liquidity and the exact expiry date
Next month The expiry immediately after the near month Price difference from the near month and the margin treatment for the pair
Far month The third listed expiry in the cycle Bid-ask depth, open interest and the larger time-to-expiry exposure

When the near-month contract expires, NSE introduces a new three-month contract on the trading day after that expiry. This rolling structure means the set of available months changes regularly; an old screenshot, symbol list or broker tutorial may not show the current contracts.

Why the month matters

Two Nifty 50 futures contracts can reference the same index but have different expiry months. Their prices may differ because of financing, dividends, demand and time remaining. The later contract also carries exposure for longer. Compare the month, the quoted price, the time to expiry, the current margin requirement and the market’s trading depth rather than treating every “Nifty future” as interchangeable.

When does a Nifty future expire?

Under the NSE rule quoted on its NIFTY 50 F&O page, monthly Nifty 50 futures expire on the last Tuesday of the expiry month. If that Tuesday is a trading holiday, the contracts expire on the previous trading day. The holiday adjustment can therefore move expiry to a Monday or another preceding session.

That rule tells you how to identify the likely date, but you should still verify the specific contract in the current exchange listing and holiday calendar. A calendar calculation alone can be wrong if a market holiday or a revised exchange schedule applies.

Expiry-day checklist

  • Open the current NSE contract listing and confirm the contract’s stated expiry date.
  • Check the exchange holiday calendar for that date and the preceding session.
  • Confirm whether your broker’s symbol refers to the NIFTY 50 contract or another Nifty-family index.
  • Review the margin shown for the expiry session; spread offsets can change at the start of expiry day.
  • Know your own instruction for the position before the trading session ends, rather than assuming an old order will be handled the same way under every broker’s process.

How lot size and contract value are determined

NSE states that the contract value at introduction may not be less than ₹15 lakh. That is a minimum value threshold for the contract when it is introduced, not a permanent statement of the current number of index units in one lot.

The exchange can stipulate or change the permitted lot size. The source material available for this article does not establish the current lot-count value, so do not multiply the index by an assumed lot size from an old calculator or social-media post. Use the latest dated NSE contract file and your broker’s corresponding symbol details. A lot-size revision changes the notional value of one contract and can change the rupee margin shown for an otherwise similar position.

What to record from the contract file

  • Contract symbol and the NIFTY index name.
  • Expiry month and the exchange-stated expiry date.
  • Permitted lot size and any quantity-freeze limit.
  • Contract value at the current index level, calculated using the verified lot size.
  • The file’s publication or effective date.

These fields are time-sensitive. The NSE contract specifications page identified for this article shows an update date of 11 August 2026; use the newest file available when you trade, not that date as a guarantee that no later change occurred.

How margin works for Nifty futures

There is no single permanent “Nifty futures margin.” NSE Clearing collects initial margin upfront for a clearing member’s open positions using the NSE Clearing-SPAN system. SPAN evaluates the portfolio against risk scenarios, so the amount depends on the contract, position size, offsets with other positions and current risk parameters.

NSE describes the initial-margin basis as a 99% value-at-risk (VaR) measure over one day. For futures in the circumstance where next-day mark-to-market collection cannot be completed before trading begins, the described horizon is two days. This is the exchange’s risk-calculation basis; it is not a prediction that a position will lose only that amount.

What can make the displayed margin move

  • Index level and notional value: a higher NIFTY level increases the rupee value represented by one verified lot.
  • Volatility and risk parameters: changing market conditions can increase the SPAN requirement.
  • Position size: adding lots increases exposure and normally increases required collateral.
  • Portfolio offsets: related positions can receive risk offsets, but the offset is calculated rather than guaranteed by the trader’s label for a “spread.”
  • Expiry timing: the treatment of index-futures spreads changes on the expiry day.
  • Broker policy: a broker can require funds above the exchange minimum, apply different intraday policies or stop accepting a trade when its own risk controls are breached.

Exchange margin versus a broker estimate

Think of the exchange calculation and the broker’s screen as two related but different layers. NSE Clearing determines the clearing risk requirement under its current parameters. Your broker then displays what it wants available for the order, which may include its own buffer, product policy or assumptions about whether the position is held intraday or overnight. Before submitting an order, compare the displayed requirement with the broker’s stated policy and ask what happens if the position is carried after the session or if volatility changes.

What changes on expiry day?

NSE lists an index-derivatives extreme-loss margin of 2% of notional value. It also states that index-futures positions in contracts expiring that day receive no calendar-spread extreme-loss-margin benefit from the start of expiry day.

A calendar spread is a position involving different contract months. SPAN explains that calendar-spread charges address the risk that prices in two months do not move in perfect correlation. The offset is therefore a risk calculation, not a guarantee that the spread is safe or that losses in one leg will be cancelled by the other.

Timing Calendar-spread treatment to consider Practical implication
Before the near contract’s expiry day Current SPAN parameters may recognize an eligible month-to-month offset Check the exact portfolio requirement and the broker’s overnight policy
From the start of that contract’s expiry day No calendar-spread extreme-loss-margin benefit for the expiring index-futures contract Available funds may need to cover a higher requirement even when both legs remain open

The 2% figure and the expiry-day treatment are exchange parameters identified from NSE material accessed on 13 October 2026. Risk parameters can be revised, so verify the current files before relying on a calculation.

What “settlement” means—and what you must verify

Settlement covers the financial process by which futures obligations are marked and ultimately closed under NSE Clearing’s rules. It is separate from the act of entering a position and separate again from the broker’s display of initial margin. A position can require funds during its life even when the trader has not closed it voluntarily.

The available NSE material establishes that futures are subject to daily mark-to-market collection and a final settlement process, but it does not establish the current daily mark-to-market formula, final settlement-price formula or the exact cash credit/debit schedule from a directly opened NSE Clearing settlement source. Those details should not be inferred from an old explainer or assumed from another derivative.

How to verify settlement details for a specific contract

  1. Identify the exact NIFTY 50 futures symbol and expiry month in the current NSE listing.
  2. Open the latest NSE Clearing rules or circular covering settlement prices and the settlement mechanism.
  3. Confirm how the daily mark-to-market amount is determined, when it is collected and how a shortfall is handled.
  4. Confirm the final settlement-price definition and the date on which the final amount is debited or credited.
  5. Read your broker’s operational notice for cut-off times, ledger posting and treatment of positions that remain open near expiry.
  6. Keep enough unencumbered funds for both the exchange requirement and any broker-specific buffer; do not rely on an estimated amount copied from a previous month.

This verification is especially important around expiry because the contract stops trading, the spread treatment changes and the broker may impose its own operational deadlines.

A practical pre-trade verification workflow

Use this sequence whenever you open a Nifty 50 futures position or roll from one month to another:

  1. Confirm the product: make sure the instrument is FUTIDX on the NIFTY 50 index, not another Nifty-family index.
  2. Confirm the month: label it near, next or far month and note the stated expiry date.
  3. Confirm the date: apply the last-Tuesday rule, then check the holiday calendar and the exchange listing.
  4. Confirm the lot: retrieve the latest permitted lot size and quantity-freeze information from the active NSE contract file.
  5. Estimate notional value: multiply the verified index futures price by the verified lot size; record the time and source of the figures.
  6. Check margin: review the live broker estimate, the exchange risk-parameter file and whether your portfolio receives an offset.
  7. Test the expiry case: if either leg expires that day, recalculate without the calendar-spread extreme-loss benefit.
  8. Read settlement instructions: verify the current daily and final settlement mechanics in NSE Clearing rules and your broker’s notice.
  9. Set a funding buffer: decide in advance how you will respond to an adverse mark-to-market debit or an intraday margin increase.

Documenting the file date, expiry date and margin estimate makes it easier to detect when a broker screen is using stale contract information.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Using an old lot-size calculator

Symptom: your notional or margin estimate does not match the trading screen. Fix: discard the assumed lot count and use the newest NSE contract file, then recalculate the notional value.

Treating the last Tuesday as unconditional

Symptom: you plan for Tuesday even though the exchange is closed. Fix: check the holiday calendar and current contract listing; the expiry moves to the previous trading day when Tuesday is a trading holiday.

Assuming a spread always lowers margin

Symptom: the required funds rise on expiry morning while both legs are still present. Fix: apply the expiry-day rule: no calendar-spread extreme-loss-margin benefit applies to the expiring index-futures contract from the start of that day.

Confusing broker margin with the exchange requirement

Symptom: the broker blocks an order even though an online calculator shows a smaller figure. Fix: ask which exchange requirement, broker buffer and holding period the screen uses; fund the amount actually required for your account.

Quoting a settlement formula from memory

Symptom: your expected credit or debit does not match the ledger. Fix: consult the current NSE Clearing settlement-price and settlement-mechanism rules and the broker’s posting schedule for that contract.

Questions to ask before placing the order

  • Is this specifically the NIFTY 50 FUTIDX contract?
  • Which of the three listed maturities am I selecting?
  • What exact date does the exchange list as expiry?
  • What lot size and quantity-freeze limit are effective today?
  • What is the current SPAN-based requirement for my entire portfolio, not just one leg?
  • Will the position be held through expiry day, and if so, how will the lost spread benefit affect funds?
  • Where can I read the current daily and final settlement rules, and when will the broker post the resulting debit or credit?

Nifty futures are leveraged financial contracts, so these are operational checks rather than a profitability method. They help you avoid entering a position with an incorrect contract month, stale lot size or insufficient funds.

Source dates and rule currency

The exchange figures cited here come from official NSE pages accessed on 13 October 2026. The NIFTY 50 F&O contract-specifications page reports an update date of 11 August 2026. Lot size, quantity-freeze limits, SPAN inputs and margin estimates can change after those dates. Verify the active NSE contract file, current NSE Clearing risk-parameter files and your broker’s live requirement immediately before trading.
