That statement does not prove that no individual employees, teams or roles were cut.
What happened and when
- December 2023: Earlier media reports said personnel reductions had begun in several NetEase businesses.
- January 19, 2024: NetEase insiders told Chinese media that the description of large-scale layoffs was untrue. The Paper reported the company’s explanation of normal business adjustments and personnel movement (The Paper).
- January 19–20, 2024: IT之家, Sina Finance and GizChina published versions of the denial and the preceding allegations (IT之家; Sina Technology; GizChina).
This was a corporate-news dispute about January 2024, not a current statement about NetEase’s workforce in 2026.

What NetEase denied—and what it said was happening
NetEase’s reported response rejected the claim that it had launched large-scale layoffs across its businesses. It described the situation as ordinary business adjustment and personnel turnover, said some NetEase Media lines were undergoing internal resource integration, and said the company continued to recruit high-quality talent (IT之家; Sina Technology).
The wording matters. “No large-scale layoffs” is narrower than “no layoffs.” A company can deny a coordinated, company-wide program while reorganizing a department, eliminating particular roles, transferring staff or allowing contracts to end.

What the earlier reports alleged
Reporting attributed to Jiemian News and unnamed sources alleged that reductions began in December 2023. NetEase Media was described as the main area affected, with some game-related units also mentioned. The accounts referred to content, marketing, sales and product positions, and named product lines such as NetEase News, NetEase Cultural Creativity and NetEase Open Classes. Those names came from secondary reporting, not an official NetEase list (Sina Finance’s reproduction of the report; GizChina).
The same coverage cited estimated reduction rates ranging from 10% to 50%, varying by business and department. No public headcount baseline, complete dataset or independent audit established those figures, so they should be treated as reported estimates—not as the percentage of NetEase employees laid off.

Why the denial and layoff reports can both appear plausible
Company-wide mass layoffs
This means a broad, coordinated workforce-reduction program across the corporation. NetEase denied that characterization.

Department-level cuts
A business line can reduce headcount without the parent company running a company-wide program. The available reports do not independently verify whether every alleged department cut occurred.

Reorganization and resource integration
Teams, products or reporting lines may be combined, and some roles may disappear. “Resource integration” describes an organizational action; it does not identify the outcome for every employee.
Transfers and attrition
An internal transfer moves an employee to another team. Attrition includes resignations and ordinary turnover. Both can change a team’s size without being a termination.

Outsourced workers
Contractor or outsourced-worker changes are a separate category and were not quantified in the January 2024 statement.

NetEase’s investor-relations site provides corporate announcements and filings, but the available material does not show a detailed public filing that confirms or quantifies the January personnel changes (NetEase Investor Relations; company news archive).
How to read the headline accurately
- “NetEase had no layoffs” is too broad: the company acknowledged adjustments, integration and personnel movement.
- “NetEase carried out verified mass layoffs across the company” is also unsupported: the alleged percentages and department reductions were not independently established.
- The strongest supported reading is that NetEase denied a company-wide mass-layoff campaign while organizational changes were taking place in at least parts of the business.
Do not combine this story with later AI-outsourcing reports
In March 2026, NetEase separately denied claims that all outsourced workers would be replaced by AI while acknowledging adjustments involving some outsourced roles and projects. That later report concerns contractors and AI-related restructuring; it neither proves nor disproves what happened in January 2024 (TechNode).
