A Quicken data file is meant to be read by Quicken, not opened like a Word document or Excel workbook. On Windows, an active file normally ends in .QDF; Windows backups use .QDF-Backup, while Quicken for Mac backups may use .quickenbackup or .quicken2017backup. Open a working file in the compatible Quicken desktop product, restore backups before using them, and export reports or transactions when you need a spreadsheet or shareable document.
Work from a duplicate, preserve the original, and choose a workflow based on whether you want to view, recover, export, convert, or repair the data.

Quick decision guide
| Your goal | Best approach | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| View registers and accounts | Open the .QDF in compatible Quicken |
Requires the appropriate desktop product, platform and release |
| Recover an old backup | Restore the backup into a new copy | It represents an earlier point in time |
| Analyze transactions in Excel | Export supported data to CSV | CSV is not a complete Quicken backup |
| Move between Quicken products | Use QXF or the official conversion workflow | Some account types and fields may not transfer |
| Create a readable record | Generate Quicken reports and save them as PDF | A PDF is not an editable database |
| Fix inconsistent data | Back up, then use Validate and Repair File on Windows | Validation can alter the working copy |
Identify the file before opening it
| Extension or format | Purpose | Correct handling |
|---|---|---|
.QDF |
Active Quicken data file, primarily associated with Quicken for Windows | Open through Quicken |
.QDF-Backup |
Windows backup | Restore through Quicken; do not treat it as the active file |
.quickenbackup or .quicken2017backup |
Quicken for Mac backup | Restore through Quicken for Mac |
.QXF |
Quicken Transfer Format | Import through a supported Quicken workflow |
.QIF |
Quicken Interchange Format for selected transfers | Use only where your edition and account type support it |
.CSV |
Flat, spreadsheet-style data | Open in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets |
.QFX |
Bank Web Connect download | Import through Quicken’s banking workflow when supported by the institution and product |
Quicken documents the file extensions and backup distinctions in its backup and restore guidance and its file-location guidance. Renaming a QDF to CSV, XLSX or QIF changes only the filename; it does not convert the contents.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can you read a QDF without Quicken?
There is no generally supported, ordinary-user method for reading the complete QDF database outside Quicken. A text editor, browser or spreadsheet may show an error or meaningless characters, not a dependable ledger. Quicken’s supported workflow is to open the file locally and then use its registers, reports and export tools.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Avoid hex editors, unofficial database extractors and upload-based “QDF viewers” unless you have independently verified both their security and their ability to preserve data. Financial files can contain account names, payees, holdings and transaction histories.
Locate and open an active file on Windows
- Open Quicken and choose File > Open Quicken File.
- Select the intended
.QDFcopy. - If the file is already open, use Quicken’s command for showing the current file in its containing folder.
- If necessary, search Windows for
.qdfand check the usual Documents-based Quicken folder. - Compare similar filenames and modification dates. Do not choose a file in a
BACKUPfolder as though it were an active file. - Confirm the result by checking account names, latest transaction dates, balances, categories and a representative report.
Quicken states that only one data file can be worked with at a time in a Quicken session; its existing-file instructions explain the supported opening workflow.
Mac files
Menu labels vary by Quicken for Mac release. Use the File menu’s open or recent-file commands, and use Quicken’s Finder-location command when you need to identify the active file. Do not assume a Windows menu path applies to Mac.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRestore a backup safely
Windows
- Make a copy of the current working file and keep the original unchanged.
- Open Quicken and choose the File menu’s Backup and Restore command, or the equivalent label in your release.
- Select Restore from Backup and browse to the
.QDF-Backupfile. - Restore to a new filename rather than overwriting the current file whenever possible.
- Open the restored copy and compare balances, holdings and transaction dates with the original.
Overwriting can discard changes made after the backup. Quicken’s backup guidance recommends restoring rather than using a backup as the normal working file.
Rank #2
- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Mac
Restore .quickenbackup or .quicken2017backup through File > View/Restore Backups, or the equivalent command in the installed release. Automatic-backup frequency and retention vary by platform, release and settings, so do not assume one universal schedule. Cloud synchronization is not a restorable desktop backup.
Inspect the contents inside Quicken
Once the file opens, use Quicken itself to read the data. Review:
- Account registers, cleared and current balances, and reconciliation status
- Categories, tags, payees, memorized payees and scheduled transactions
- Transfers and split transactions
- Investment transactions, holdings, share quantities, prices, cost basis and lots
- Bills, income reminders and attachments where supported
- Income-and-expense, net-worth, tax, investment and account-balance reports
For a practical validation, check the latest transaction date, institution and account type, a known transfer, a split transaction, an investment holding and a report covering the period you need.
Export data into a readable format
CSV for spreadsheet analysis
CSV is useful for filtering, sorting, summarizing transactions or supplying a transaction list to a tax professional. It is a flat export, not a complete backup. Depending on the export and account type, it may omit account relationships, reconciliation metadata, attachments, scheduled transactions, investment lots, cost basis, custom report settings or full split structure.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Quicken for Mac’s CSV workflow may be labeled Mint.com File (CSV); Quicken says investment transactions are not currently supported through that workflow. See its Mac CSV documentation before relying on it.
QIF for selected transfers
QIF support depends on edition, platform and account type. Quicken’s current Windows documentation says general QIF import is not available for checking, savings, credit-card, 401(k) or other brokerage accounts, although some institutions may provide price-history downloads through QIF. Confirm the exact option in your release before planning a migration. Details are in Quicken’s Windows import guidance.
QXF for Quicken-to-Quicken movement
QXF is intended to transfer or merge data between supported Quicken products. On Windows, the documented path is:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open or create the destination Quicken file.
- Choose File > File Import > Quicken Transfer Format (.QXF) file.
- Browse to the QXF file and start the import.
- Review accounts that cannot be imported.
- Reconnect eligible accounts afterward if required.
Quicken warns that some investing or business accounts may not import through the same process, and Quicken Starter cannot import or export QXF files.
Rank #4
- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop

Reports and PDF
For human-readable sharing, generate reports for income and expenses, net worth, account balances, tax categories, investment performance or transactions by account and category, then save or print them as PDF. A PDF is useful evidence for a tax professional, but it cannot preserve the working database.
Repair a file that opens incorrectly
Symptoms that justify investigation include missing categories or tags, incorrect report values, missing report dates, split-transaction errors, severe slowness in one account, failed backups or unexpected data.
- Make a separate backup and retain the pre-repair copy.
- Open the affected Quicken for Windows file.
- Choose File > Validate and Repair File.
- Select the validation option appropriate to the problem and let it finish.
- Read the validation log.
- Check balances, reports, categories and transactions before relying on the repaired file.
Quicken says validation creates a backup in a VALIDATE folder while leaving the validated version in the normal data-file folder. Keep that recovery copy until verification is complete; see Quicken’s VALIDATE-folder explanation.
Convert between Windows and Mac
Windows to Mac
- Back up the Windows file.
- Validate it before conversion.
- Record account balances and investment holdings.
- Use Quicken’s supported conversion procedure.
- Compare balances, holdings and transaction ranges after conversion.
- Identify missing records and reconnect accounts for downloads.
- Keep the original Windows file for reference.
Quicken specifically warns that Windows Business & Personal invoices and attachments may not transfer to Quicken for Mac. Review the Windows-to-Mac guidance.

Mac to Windows
Quicken’s documented route is to export a Quicken Windows Transfer File (.QXF), create a new Windows data file, import the QXF, and reconnect accounts. Conversion can cause data loss, so back up first and compare results; see Mac conversion instructions and the Windows import documentation.
Country editions
Quicken states that U.S. and Canadian versions cannot be converted directly between one another; a new data file is required. Older files may also require an intermediate version or a release-specific conversion path.
Security and privacy precautions
- Work from a copy and keep the original offline and unchanged.
- Do not upload a QDF or backup to an unknown online viewer or converter.
- Use encrypted storage for backups and remove unnecessary copies from shared folders.
- Avoid emailing an unencrypted financial database.
- If a technician handles the file, agree how it will be stored, accessed and deleted.
Quicken notes that backups may include financial information, reports, passwords, accounts and attachments. Cloud synchronization does not replace a restorable backup.

Which Quicken product fits the job?
Quicken Classic is the desktop-oriented product family for working with local Quicken data files on Windows and Mac. Quicken Simplifi is a web/mobile personal-finance product, not a direct QDF reader. Product features differ among Starter, Deluxe, Premier and Business & Personal, and current availability and pricing are region- and date-specific. See Quicken’s product comparison, subscription FAQ and Simplifi comparison.
If you need only a one-time ledger, exporting selected records to CSV or PDF may be sufficient. If you are leaving Quicken, preserve the original and test a duplicate or small export before committing to another program. Moneydance (moneydance.com), Banktivity (banktivity.com) and GnuCash (gnucash.org) are possible destinations, not guaranteed direct QDF readers.
