Modern Hydrogen announced a $32.8 million, oversubscribed Series B-2 financing on May 11, 2023. NextEra Energy led the round, joined by Miura, National Grid Partners and existing investors. The financing supported a major pivot: the company moved away from waste-heat-to-electricity hardware and focused instead on producing hydrogen and solid carbon from natural gas or biogas.
This is a historical financing story, not a current startup update. An Unreasonable Group profile now says Modern Hydrogen is no longer operating, following layoffs and restructuring.

Why Modern Electron became Modern Hydrogen
Modern Hydrogen began in 2015 as a spinout from Intellectual Ventures under the name Modern Electron. Its original technology was designed to recover waste heat from residential furnaces and water heaters and convert it into electricity. The company later stopped pursuing that product and redirected its engineering work toward hydrogen production.
The name change reflected that strategic shift rather than a simple marketing rebrand. The company said its experience in high-temperature physics, heat transfer, thermomechanical engineering and applied chemistry could be applied to methane-pyrolysis reactors. Intellectual Ventures lists Modern Electron among its spinouts.
How the hydrogen process works
Modern Hydrogen focused on methane pyrolysis, sometimes called “turquoise hydrogen.” In simplified terms:
- Natural gas, renewable natural gas or biogas enters a high-temperature reactor.
- The reactor splits methane into hydrogen and solid carbon.
- The hydrogen is used for fuel, industrial processes, power generation or other applications.
- The carbon leaves as a solid rather than as carbon dioxide exhaust from the methane-splitting reaction.
The process differs from conventional steam-methane reforming, which produces hydrogen and carbon dioxide, and from electrolysis, which uses electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Methane pyrolysis may reduce the need for hydrogen transport and can potentially use existing gas infrastructure, but it remains dependent on the feedstock and the energy required to operate the reactor.
Is methane-pyrolysis hydrogen really “clean”?
Modern Hydrogen described its product as clean hydrogen. That description needs qualification. Producing solid carbon instead of directly releasing carbon dioxide at the reactor is not the same as proving that the entire fuel pathway is carbon-neutral or carbon-negative.

The climate result depends on several factors:
- How much methane leaks during extraction, processing and delivery.
- Whether the feedstock is fossil natural gas, renewable natural gas or biogas.
- How much heat and electricity the reactor consumes.
- The emissions associated with manufacturing and operating the equipment.
- Whether the solid carbon remains stored in a durable product or is eventually oxidized, degraded or discarded.
The available financing coverage does not independently establish Modern Hydrogen’s lifecycle emissions, energy efficiency or carbon-storage permanence. It is therefore more accurate to say that the process is designed to separate carbon as a solid, not that it produces “no emissions.”
Why produce hydrogen locally?
Hydrogen is difficult and expensive to transport because it has low energy density by volume and generally requires specialized pipelines, compression, storage or trucking. Modern Hydrogen’s strategy was to put smaller reactors near customers rather than produce hydrogen at one large facility and transport it over long distances.

The company targeted utilities and industrial operators that could make hydrogen at the point of use for heating, power generation, industrial operations or fuel cells. Its planned demonstration units were described as roughly half the size of a shipping container.
Modern Hydrogen also said that, in favorable conditions, approximately one-quarter of the hydrogen produced could be recycled to power additional hydrogen generation. That was a company claim, not an independently validated performance figure in the available reporting.
What happens to the solid carbon?
Solid carbon was central to both the opportunity and the risk in the business model. Modern Hydrogen explored potential uses in asphalt, concrete, tires, rubber and ink. If the material met the necessary specifications and could be sold at attractive prices, it might improve the economics of hydrogen production.

In 2024, GeekWire reported that the company had tested solid carbon in asphalt and deployed demonstration reactors to NW Natural and an unnamed Miami customer.

A commercial-scale reactor could produce more carbon than available markets can absorb. The economics would depend on the carbon’s quality, handling costs, customer demand, durability and end-of-life treatment. Carbon incorporated into asphalt may store carbon for a period of time, but the available sources do not establish permanence under a verified carbon-accounting methodology.
Planned pilots and commercialization
Modern Hydrogen said it planned pilot projects with NW Natural, described as Oregon’s largest natural-gas utility, and another utility that coverage indicated might be NextEra Energy. It also discussed a project using biogas from dairy waste. Demonstration reactors were expected to ship to utility customers in the third quarter of 2023.
The company projected that commercial products could arrive in late 2024 or early 2025. That was a forward-looking target announced in 2023, not a confirmed milestone. No claim should be made that broad commercial deployment occurred based on that forecast.

Modern Hydrogen entered a crowded market. Competing pathways included renewable-powered electrolysis, steam-methane reforming with carbon capture, other methane-pyrolysis systems, renewable natural gas and direct electrification.

|---|---|---|
| Methane pyrolysis | Natural gas or biogas plus heat | Produces hydrogen and solid carbon; results depend heavily on methane leakage and carbon use or storage. |
| Electrolysis | Water and electricity | Can have low emissions with clean electricity, but electricity demand and equipment costs are significant. |
| Steam-methane reforming | Natural gas and steam | Established industrial process, but produces carbon dioxide; capture performance and storage determine reductions. |
| Direct electrification | Electricity | May avoid hydrogen conversion losses where heat pumps or electric equipment can perform the job directly. |
The best option depends on the application. Hydrogen may be more relevant for some industrial processes that are difficult to electrify directly, while using hydrogen for applications that can readily use electricity may add unnecessary conversion and infrastructure costs.
The financial and commercial risks
For investors and energy customers, the financing story raised several questions beyond the headline amount:
- Feedstock risk: Fossil natural gas would leave the system exposed to gas prices and methane leakage, while biogas supplies may be limited and geographically constrained.
- Carbon-market risk: Revenue from solid carbon would depend on consistent quality, buyers and durable end uses.
- Hydrogen-demand risk: Potential customers may not be willing to pay enough to cover equipment, energy, maintenance and safety costs.
- Infrastructure risk: Local production reduces transport needs but still requires gas connections, hydrogen handling, storage and end-use equipment.
- Regulatory risk: Projects must address flammability, leak detection, high-temperature equipment, pressure management, permitting, air-quality rules and eligibility for clean-hydrogen incentives.
- Technology risk: Demonstration-scale operation does not establish reliability, bankability or cost competitiveness at commercial scale.
The available reporting does not independently verify reactor efficiency, production costs, permits, incentive eligibility or safety certification.
What happened afterward?
The later company outcome is important context. The Unreasonable Group’s current profile says Modern Hydrogen is no longer operating and had laid off most employees after funding changes and a broader restructuring effort. The profile is not a formal shutdown filing, so the status should be attributed to that source.

It changes how the announcement should be interpreted: as a historical attempt to fund a major climate-tech pivot, rather than evidence of a currently operating growth company or an active investment opportunity.
Bottom line for readers
Modern Hydrogen raised $32.8 million to pursue distributed methane pyrolysis, backed by NextEra Energy and other strategic investors. Its pitch combined local hydrogen production with a potentially valuable solid-carbon product and aimed to address the cost of transporting hydrogen.
The concept had clear technical and commercial questions. Natural-gas dependence, methane leakage, energy inputs, carbon-market demand and hydrogen economics all mattered. The funding demonstrated investor interest, but it did not prove lifecycle carbon neutrality or successful commercialization. The company’s later reported shutdown underscores the gap between a promising pilot concept and a durable, scalable business.
