Before the release, the central investor question was not simply whether Microsoft could beat revenue estimates. It was whether Azure growth and Copilot adoption were advancing quickly enough to justify the company’s escalating AI infrastructure spending.
Preview estimates varied by provider, with cited revenue expectations ranging from roughly $68.2 billion to $68.9 billion and one estimate putting adjusted earnings per share at about $3.11. Those figures were analyst estimates, not Microsoft guidance. The company’s own most important targets were Azure growth of 31% to 32% in constant currency and fiscal-second-quarter Intelligent Cloud revenue of $25.55 billion to $25.85 billion.

1. Azure growth was the main test
Azure remained the clearest way for investors to assess whether Microsoft’s AI strategy was translating into reported revenue. In its fiscal Q1 2025 outlook, Microsoft guided for Azure and other cloud services growth of 31% to 32% in constant currency. Management also said consumption growth should remain stable and that the company expected to add more sequential Azure dollars than in any previous quarter.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe complication was capacity. Microsoft said demand for AI services exceeded available capacity, meaning strong customer interest did not automatically become recognized revenue during the quarter. For shareholders, that created two competing interpretations:
#1 Best Overall
- Design: The monitor stand for the desk has a large 14.6 x 9.3 inches plastic shelf that fits most flat screen displays, laptops, and printers, with a maximum support weight of up to 44 lbs (20kg). Rubber pads prevent slipping or damage to your work surface
- Ergonomic: The height-adjustable monitor riser can raise a computer monitor, notebook, or any device by 4.5 inches, 5.3 inches, or 6.1 inches off the desk to create a comfortable viewing and sitting position which helps reduce stress on the neck and back
- Ventilated: The computer stand has a large sturdy platform with vented holes, this stand will prevent overheating and keep the device running cool
- Organization: The sleek modern black design complements any desk while adding extra space underneath the stand for storage
- Easy Installation: Tools are not required for assembly of this computer accessories. All components fit together smoothly for fast setup to organize your desk quickly
- Bullish interpretation: Demand was strong and new data-center capacity could unlock additional growth later.
- Cautious interpretation: A capacity shortage was still an execution and monetization problem if Microsoft could not serve customers when they wanted to buy.
Azure should therefore not be described as weak merely because expectations were high. A growth rate around 31% would still represent robust expansion. But the market increasingly wanted evidence of AI-driven acceleration, not just sustained growth.
Investors also needed to separate Azure from Microsoft Cloud. Microsoft Cloud includes several cloud and subscription businesses, while Azure is reported within the Intelligent Cloud segment. Azure growth was important, but it did not represent every dollar of Microsoft’s broader cloud revenue.
2. AI capital spending had to produce returns
Microsoft was investing heavily in data centers, GPUs, networking and related infrastructure to meet AI demand. Reuters reported before the release that Microsoft planned to spend approximately $80 billion on AI-enabled data centers during its fiscal year. That figure was reported spending guidance, not a standalone GAAP line item in Microsoft’s earnings release.

The investment raised three related questions:
- Would additional capacity accelerate Azure revenue?
- Would AI revenue grow faster than the associated infrastructure and operating costs?
- How long would shareholders have to wait for attractive returns on that capital?
AI infrastructure can support revenue growth while temporarily pressuring gross margins, operating margins and free cash flow. That trade-off may be acceptable if Microsoft can demonstrate durable demand, pricing power and high utilization. It becomes more concerning if spending rises faster than monetization or if customers use cheaper alternatives to reduce their cloud bills.

What DeepSeek changed—and what it did not
The emergence of DeepSeek shortly before Microsoft’s report added another variable. More efficient models could reduce the computing required for some tasks, potentially lowering the cost of AI services. But cheaper inference could also make AI applications affordable to more customers and increase total usage.
Those effects are not mutually exclusive. Model efficiency might reduce the infrastructure needed per task while increasing the number of tasks performed. Microsoft would still need capacity for customer workloads, model hosting, storage, networking and conventional enterprise computing. DeepSeek therefore created a debate about demand elasticity and infrastructure economics; it did not prove that Microsoft’s AI investment was either unnecessary or guaranteed to pay off.
3. OpenAI and Stargate raised strategic questions
Microsoft’s relationship with OpenAI was another major focus. Investors wanted clarity about OpenAI’s move toward a for-profit structure, the economics of the partnership and the implications of Stargate, the newly announced AI infrastructure project.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Stargate raised questions about who would own and operate infrastructure, how workloads would be allocated and whether the project would complement Microsoft’s capacity or create a competing source of infrastructure. It was reasonable for investors to ask whether Stargate could affect Microsoft’s future capital requirements or its expected share of OpenAI-related demand.

It would be too strong, however, to say that Stargate ended Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI or definitively shifted OpenAI workloads away from Azure. The relevant issue was whether Stargate represented competitive pressure, complementary capacity or a change in Microsoft’s financial burden. Management’s explanation on the earnings call mattered more than speculation based on the project’s announcement alone.
The relationship also illustrated a broader trade-off. OpenAI gave Microsoft an important position in generative AI, but dependence on a major partner can create concentration risk and uncertainty around economics, infrastructure commitments and competitive overlap.
4. Copilot needed to become a repeatable upsell
Microsoft 365 Copilot was strategically important, but investors needed more than adoption headlines. The key financial question was whether Copilot could become a durable, high-margin upsell across Microsoft’s installed enterprise base.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft’s prior guidance called for Microsoft 365 commercial cloud revenue growth of approximately 14% in constant currency, supported by moderating seat growth, higher average revenue per user through E5 and Microsoft 365 Copilot. Management said Copilot seat growth was continuing and that related revenue would build gradually over time.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.

The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
That wording made the evidence investors wanted fairly specific:
- How many seats were paid rather than merely part of a trial?
- How frequently were customers using the product?
- Were pilots converting into renewals?
- Were customers expanding deployments after initial adoption?
- How much incremental revenue remained after inference and support costs?
Seats, active usage and recognized revenue are different measures. A growing seat count does not by itself establish that Copilot is already a material or highly profitable earnings driver. An analyst cited by Reuters estimated that a 10% penetration rate could eventually add more than $10 billion in revenue over five years, but that was an analyst scenario—not Microsoft guidance—and depended on the stated penetration assumption.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Guidance had to support second-half acceleration
Before Q2, Microsoft said Azure growth was expected to accelerate in the second half of fiscal 2025 as increased capital investment brought more AI capacity online. That made forward guidance at least as important as the quarter’s headline results.
Investors were looking for evidence that:
- new capacity would arrive on schedule;
- AI demand would convert into billable usage;
- Microsoft Cloud growth could offset infrastructure costs; and
- margins and free cash flow would recover as utilization improved.
A strong report would have combined Azure growth at or above the high end of the 31% to 32% range, evidence that capacity—not weak demand—was the main constraint, better detail on paid Copilot expansion, and a credible path to returns on AI spending. A disappointing report would have shown Azure below guidance, higher capital spending without stronger monetization, weak Copilot conversion or a lower outlook for the following quarter.

What actually happened
Microsoft said AI services contributed 13 percentage points to Azure growth and grew 157% year over year, while demand remained above available capacity. Intelligent Cloud revenue was $25.5 billion, and the Associated Press reported that this was below a cited FactSet forecast of approximately $25.83 billion. Reuters, via ThePrint, reported capital expenditures of $22.6 billion, above a Visible Alpha consensus estimate of $20.95 billion.
For the next quarter, Microsoft guided for Azure growth of 31% to 32% in constant currency and Microsoft 365 commercial cloud growth of 14% to 15%. The result confirmed that AI was already contributing materially to Azure and Microsoft’s revenue, but it did not remove concerns about capacity, capital intensity, Copilot monetization or whether Azure could accelerate quickly enough to justify the investment cycle.
Primary results and guidance are available in Microsoft’s FY25 Q2 earnings release and FY25 Q2 earnings call.
