In the quarter ended December 31, 2023, Microsoft’s gaming revenue was about $7.1 billion, compared with about $5.3 billion for Windows. The comparison came just after Microsoft completed its Activision Blizzard acquisition and began including the publisher’s results.
What Microsoft’s gaming business actually surpassed
The December 2023 figures compare sales, not earnings after costs. GeekWire reported about $7.1 billion in gaming revenue and about $5.3 billion in Windows revenue for the quarter ended December 31, 2023. That was Microsoft’s fiscal 2024 second quarter, and the first reporting quarter to include Activision Blizzard following the acquisition’s completion on October 13, 2023. - Revenue is money generated from sales and services before expenses.
- Gross profit is revenue after the direct costs of delivering products and services.
- Operating income subtracts operating expenses such as research, marketing, and administration from gross profit.
- Net income is what remains after additional items, including interest and taxes.
Microsoft did not publish directly comparable standalone gaming and Windows profit figures. The headline claim that gaming “profit” surpassed Windows therefore goes beyond the available disclosure. The reported milestone is a revenue one.

Why Activision Blizzard changed the revenue comparison
Microsoft closed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard on October 13, 2023, and then consolidated the publisher’s results into its accounts. Activision brought established businesses and franchises, including Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Candy Crush, Diablo, Overwatch, and King’s mobile games. Its revenue spans console, PC, and mobile platforms; it is not simply revenue from Xbox-console sales.

Microsoft’s fiscal 2024 annual report says gaming revenue increased by $6.0 billion, or 39%, for the full fiscal year. Xbox content and services revenue rose 50%, with the acquisition contributing 44 percentage points of that growth. Meanwhile, Xbox hardware revenue declined 13%. The pattern points to the acquired content and broader services business—not a surge in console sales—as a major driver. Microsoft’s fiscal 2024 annual report.
The annual growth figures cover a full fiscal year, while the $7.1 billion-versus-$5.3 billion comparison is for one quarter. They answer different questions: the quarterly figures show which business had higher reported revenue in that period; the annual figures describe growth over the fiscal year.

Higher revenue does not establish higher profit
Gaming revenue comes with costs that differ from those associated with Windows licensing. Game development and publishing, studio payroll, marketing, cloud infrastructure, platform support, hardware, and acquired-content integration all affect profitability. Windows revenue also has its own costs, but Microsoft does not report a standalone Windows-versus-gaming income statement that would allow a like-for-like profit comparison.

Gaming contributed to gross-margin growth in More Personal Computing, but the acquisition also contributed 34 percentage points to that segment’s operating-expense growth and seven percentage points to research and development expense growth. The filing does not isolate all gaming revenue and costs well enough to calculate a clean gaming operating margin against Windows.

Both gaming and Windows sit within Microsoft’s More Personal Computing reporting segment, alongside other activities such as search and news advertising and Devices. Segment operating income is consequently not a proxy for gaming profit, and revenue from Activision is not the same as incremental profit from the deal.
What the milestone says about Microsoft’s gaming strategy
The shift was meaningful, but not wholly sudden. GeekWire reported that gaming revenue had been close to Windows revenue in the comparable prior-year quarter, within roughly $50 million. Activision helped push gaming ahead at a moment when the businesses were already near parity.

The acquisition also underscores a broader strategic shift: Microsoft’s gaming portfolio includes content and services across platforms, not just the sale of Xbox hardware. Subscriptions, downloadable content, in-game purchases, publishing, and mobile games can bring in revenue across a title’s life and across devices. Windows, by contrast, is a narrower reported comparison encompassing Windows Commercial products and cloud services plus Windows OEM revenue—not every Microsoft product connected to PCs.

That does not make gaming permanently larger than Windows, nor does it show the acquisition paid for itself. A single quarter’s revenue ranking is affected by acquisition timing, release schedules, hardware cycles, and the businesses included in each reported figure.

What later results show—and do not show
Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 second-quarter earnings material continued to report gaming within More Personal Computing rather than as a separate segment. In that quarter, gaming revenue declined 9% year over year, Xbox content and services revenue declined 5%, and gaming operating income within the segment declined 3%; Microsoft cited an approximate 27% gaming operating margin. It said weaker first-party content weighed on the quarter, while Game Pass growth partly offset the decline. Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 Q2 earnings materials.
Those later results do not undo the December 2023 revenue milestone. They do show why it should be treated as a dated quarterly comparison, not proof of a permanent ranking or a gaming-profit advantage.
