Michelle Johnston Holthaus became Intel’s CEO of Intel Products on December 2, 2024, overseeing the company’s client, data-center, AI, network and edge businesses. She was also named interim co-CEO alongside David Zinsner. Intel later appointed Lip-Bu Tan as CEO effective March 18, 2025, and announced Holthaus’s planned departure on September 8, 2025. She should therefore be understood as Intel’s former Products CEO, not its current chief executive.

Holthaus’s appointment was significant because Intel created the Intel Products organization to give its major product businesses clearer leadership while keeping Intel Foundry, the manufacturing and process-technology operation, separate. Her background was rooted less in semiconductor fabrication than in sales, marketing, customers, channels and client computing.

For investors, vendors and technology professionals, her short tenure at the top of Intel Products is best understood as one chapter in Intel’s broader effort to restore product competitiveness, strengthen customer execution and manage the relationship between product design and manufacturing.

1. She was a nearly 30-year Intel veteran

Holthaus joined Intel in 1996. According to CRN’s contemporary profile, she began as a program manager in Intel’s OEM Platform Solutions Division before moving through sales, marketing, channel, mobile, desktop and client-business roles.

Her senior positions included:

  • Executive vice president and general manager of the Client Computing Group from April 2022 until her appointment to lead Intel Products.
  • Executive vice president, chief sales officer and general manager of the Sales and Marketing Group from September 2019 to January 2022.
  • Senior vice president of sales and marketing and acting chief marketing officer from September 2017 to September 2019.

CRN also reported that she managed Intel’s global Microsoft account from 2013 to 2017, citing her professional profile. Her education and that Microsoft-account assignment are details attributed to CRN rather than to Intel’s SEC filing.

Her career gave her experience across both the commercial and operating sides of Intel. The 2024 Form 10-K confirms her long Intel tenure and senior leadership history.

2. Intel Products covered the company’s core product businesses

Intel Products was not simply a renamed PC division or a single chip line. It brought together three established operating groups:

Group Primary scope
Client Computing Group PC processors and platforms, including Intel Core and Core Ultra products.
Data Center and AI Group Xeon server processors and AI products such as Gaudi accelerators.
Network and Edge Group Networking and edge-computing products.

This structure differed from Intel Foundry, which focused on manufacturing services, process technology and production capabilities. Intel’s December 2024 announcement described the separation as part of a push for clearer accountability between product businesses and the foundry.

The division created a potentially useful management boundary: product leaders could be judged on demand, product road maps, customer relationships and financial performance, while foundry leaders managed technology development and manufacturing economics. The trade-off was that the two sides still had to coordinate closely. Product launches depend on process technology, packaging, supply, capacity and manufacturing quality.

Holthaus therefore did not personally run every Intel product or factory. Her remit covered the major Intel Products organizations, while Intel Foundry remained a separate part of the business.

3. Her background was rooted in customers and channels

Holthaus brought a commercial and ecosystem-oriented perspective to the role. Intel sells through and works with PC manufacturers, distributors, retailers, system builders, software companies, cloud and data-center customers, and other partners. Product specifications alone do not determine whether those products become successful systems.

CRN reported that, while Holthaus led Intel’s Sales and Marketing Group, she placed global channel chief John Kalvin directly on her staff. Her stated rationale was that channel partners needed regular representation alongside Intel’s largest customers.

She also promoted a “One Intel” approach intended to coordinate product road maps, branding, marketing and partner activity. That approach suggested an effort to reduce fragmentation between Intel’s product organizations and the companies that bring Intel-based systems to market.

It is reasonable to interpret the appointment as a sign that Intel valued institutional knowledge, customer trust and commercial execution during a period of upheaval. Intel did not publicly state a single definitive reason why Holthaus was selected, so that interpretation should not be treated as an official explanation.

4. She inherited the AI-PC and product-competitiveness challenge

Before becoming CEO of Intel Products, Holthaus led the Client Computing Group during Intel’s transition toward AI-enabled PCs. Intel’s Core Ultra processors introduced integrated neural processing units, or NPUs, alongside CPU and GPU resources. Later Core Ultra 200V and 200S families expanded Intel’s AI-PC and desktop offerings, according to the company’s 2024 filing.

CRN reported that Intel worked with more than 100 software vendors on AI features intended to use Core Ultra capabilities. That work highlighted an important distinction:

  • Hardware capability: The processor may include CPU, GPU and NPU resources for different types of workloads.
  • Software support: Applications must be designed or updated to use local AI acceleration.
  • User benefit: Local processing may improve responsiveness, privacy or battery efficiency for some tasks, but an NPU does not automatically improve every application.

The practical value of an AI PC depends on the software being used, whether the workload runs locally or in the cloud, and the system’s battery, thermal and memory design. AI branding alone is not proof of a meaningful benefit for every buyer.

Holthaus also inherited a broader competitive problem. Intel faced pressure from AMD in x86 processors, Apple’s Arm-based M-series chips in Macs and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon products in Windows PCs. In data-center and AI markets, Intel had to compete across CPUs, accelerators, software and developer ecosystems against companies with strong positions in particular segments.

Intel’s 2024 filing said Core Ultra Series 1 introduced an integrated NPU, but also noted that 13th- and 14th-generation Core processors still represented a significant majority of client sales that year. That combination illustrates the challenge: Intel had to promote new AI-PC platforms while continuing to earn revenue from large existing product families.

5. Her appointment was part of a fast-moving leadership transition

  1. December 2, 2024: Intel appointed Holthaus CEO of Intel Products and interim co-CEO alongside David Zinsner after Pat Gelsinger’s retirement. The new Products organization included Client Computing, Data Center and AI, and Network and Edge.
  2. March 12, 2025 announcement; March 18 effective date: Intel appointed Lip-Bu Tan as chief executive officer. Holthaus remained CEO of Intel Products rather than becoming Intel’s permanent company-wide CEO. See Intel’s announcement.
  3. March 31–April 1, 2025: Holthaus appeared in Intel Vision 2025 programming as CEO of Intel Products, emphasizing customer needs and partnerships. Intel’s event roundup documents her participation.
  4. September 8, 2025: Intel announced that Holthaus would depart after more than three decades with the company and remain a strategic adviser during the transition. The announcement did not establish a precise employment end date or identify a continuing Intel role for her as of September 2026. See Intel’s leadership announcement.

What Intel Products meant financially

Intel’s 2024 results provide historical context for the scale of the organization Holthaus led. Intel reported $48.9 billion in Intel Products revenue in 2024, up $1.3 billion from 2023. Total company revenue was $53.1 billion, down 2% year over year.

Those are 2024 figures, not current 2026 performance. They show why Intel Products was strategically important: it represented the overwhelming majority of Intel’s reported revenue, while the company was simultaneously investing in and restructuring its foundry ambitions.

Why Holthaus’s profile mattered

Holthaus represented a customer- and product-oriented leadership profile at a company trying to improve execution across a complicated technology portfolio. Her experience could help with OEM relationships, channel coordination, product positioning and turning road maps into shipped systems and revenue.

There was also a genuine management tension. Intel Products needed strong commercial execution, but semiconductor competitiveness ultimately depends on architecture, software, process technology, manufacturing and supply-chain performance. A sales and channel background could be an advantage in rebuilding trust and demand; it did not by itself resolve Intel’s engineering or manufacturing challenges.

Likewise, separating Products from Foundry could make accountability clearer while increasing the need for disciplined coordination. The structure clarified who owned which business, but it did not eliminate the technical and operational dependencies between them.

Bottom line

Michelle Johnston Holthaus was appointed to lead Intel Products because she combined long Intel experience with senior responsibility for client computing, sales, marketing and partner relationships. Her remit covered Intel’s major product businesses—not Intel Foundry—and placed her at the center of the company’s AI-PC push and competitive recovery effort.

Her time as CEO of Intel Products was brief. Intel’s December 2024 appointment, March 2025 CEO transition and September 2025 departure announcement are all necessary to understand the role accurately. The lasting significance of her career lies in the commercial, channel and client-computing experience she brought to one of Intel’s most consequential organizational transitions.
