That is narrower than recovering a missing seed phrase, reversing a theft, or undoing a transfer. The report documents the company’s claims and a historical fee structure—not independently verified success, current availability, or a guarantee that funds can be recovered.
What kind of wallet problem might a recovery firm investigate?
A forgotten password to an existing wallet is different from other problems often described as a “lost wallet.” The distinction matters because a password investigation may use information and devices the owner still has, while a missing recovery phrase or a completed transaction may leave no practical route to access or retrieve funds.

- Forgotten wallet password: Praefortis told SecurityWeek it investigated password-recovery cases using evidence from the owner and devices. The report does not establish that any particular wallet or password can be recovered.
- Missing seed or recovery phrase: The SecurityWeek profile does not describe a method for recreating a lost seed phrase.
- Stolen or compromised wallet: Password investigation is not the same as reversing a theft or securing a compromised wallet.
- Crypto sent to the wrong address: The profile does not claim to reverse a completed transfer.
- Exchange or platform failure: This is a separate issue from recovering a password to a wallet you control.
The FTC cautions that if you lose a digital-wallet password, send cryptocurrency to the wrong person, or have a wallet stolen or compromised, you may find that “no one can step in to help you recover your funds.” That is general consumer guidance, not a finding about Praefortis or every possible password-reconstruction case. SecurityWeek’s March 21, 2024, article identified Praefortis as a company founded that month by CEO Jim Carden and CTO Wesley Brandi. It described Carden’s investigative and digital-forensics background and Brandi’s software-development experience based on interviews and the founders’ accounts; it did not report an independent audit of their credentials or the firm’s work.

Proposed investigation
The company said it could examine a broad range of evidence, including hard drives, phones, thumb drives, hardware and software wallets, and information supplied by the wallet owner, using custom tools. Carden declined to disclose technical details. He told SecurityWeek: “When you do an investigation into digital evidence in the cyber realm, you must investigate the whole corpus of data that surrounds your subject.” This is his description of the approach, not independent evidence that the method works.
Evidence of results
The profile gave no recovery rate, sample size, independently validated test, audited case outcome, or security certification. It therefore cannot establish how often the service succeeds or whether it is effective for a particular wallet.

Historical fee terms
SecurityWeek reported a fee of 10% of the value recovered or $15,000, whichever was lower, with a $15,000 maximum. Those are terms reported in March 2024, not a current quote or confirmation of today’s policy. Confirm current fees, payment timing, and all other terms directly through contact details you independently verify.

Because an investigation may involve personal devices and wallet-related material, assess the engagement before providing a device, file, credential, or other sensitive information. SecurityWeek described the breadth of evidence Praefortis said it might examine, but did not document current data safeguards.

- Define the problem in writing. Ask the provider to state whether it handles your specific situation—such as a forgotten password—and what it cannot do. Do not treat a general promise to “recover crypto” as an answer.
- Get the scope and terms in writing. Confirm the work proposed, the fee basis, when payment is due, any maximum fee, and what happens if no funds are recovered. Do not assume the 2024 terms still apply.
- Ask exactly what access is required. Find out which devices, files, credentials, or wallet materials the provider wants, what will be copied, and who will be able to see them.
- Clarify data handling. Ask how information and devices will be secured, how long copies will be kept, and when and how they will be deleted. Do not infer safeguards that the provider has not explained.
- Check independent oversight. Ask whether a lawyer or another independent intermediary will oversee the engagement, what that role entails, and who receives payment. SecurityWeek reported that Praefortis preferred to work through law firms, with a law firm engaged on behalf of the client and overseeing payment; that historical description does not establish current arrangements.
- Verify the provider independently. Use contact information you confirm independently and assess claims without relying only on referrals or messages from the provider. The available reporting does not support ranking recovery firms by safety or success.
Recognize recovery-scam warning signs
The FTC warns that scammers target people who have already lost money, sometimes offering recovery in exchange for an upfront fee or sensitive personal or financial information. Be especially wary of unsolicited contact, pressure to pay before clear written terms are provided, and requests for information that would give someone control of funds. These are reasons to verify an offer—not evidence that Praefortis is a scam.
Research any provider independently and report suspected fraud. The FTC’s Refund and Recovery Scams guidance explains common warning signs.
