Choose a few ways to reach the customers and neighborhoods your business actually serves, begin with actions that cost little cash, and track inquiries or sales. Keep the approaches that help you meet your goals; adjust or drop the ones that do not. “Low cost” still requires time, and the right mix depends on your business, audience, location, and capacity.
Start with a budget you can sustain
There is no universal marketing budget that fits every small business. Rieva Lesonsky, CEO and President of GrowBiz Media, put it plainly in a 2019 U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) article: “There’s no hard and fast answer to how much your business should spend.” The amount depends on the business and its goals, not a standard figure. When money is tight, account for staff time as well as cash. Word-of-mouth, social media, and volunteering at community events can be virtually free, the SBA notes, but they still take effort. Business Queensland likewise recommends choosing marketing activities around the customers a business wants to reach and the resources it can commit. Business Queensland, “Marketing on a small budget”
Before trying an idea, consider five practical questions: What will it cost in cash? How much time will it take? Does it reach the people you serve? How soon can you try it? Can you tell whether it helped? These are decision criteria, not a universal ranking: the right answer depends on your own customers and goals.

Make it easier for nearby customers to find you
Check your business listings
Start by checking that the business name, contact details, address or service area, and hours are accurate wherever customers might look. A listing with outdated hours or a wrong phone number can frustrate a prospective customer even if the listing itself costs nothing. The SBA’s 2017 local-marketing article names search listings and local directories among possible tactics, but platform names, eligibility, and features can change. Check each platform’s current requirements rather than relying on an older set of setup instructions. SBA, “10 Local Marketing Strategies That Work”
Choose directories that fit your category
A local directory is useful only if people looking for your kind of business use it. A service provider, restaurant, and neighborhood shop may have different relevant directories. Prioritize a small number that your customers actually consult, and check that the information matches across them. Listing upkeep takes staff time, so avoid treating every available directory as equally worthwhile.

Turn satisfied customers into repeat business and referrals
Follow up and invite honest feedback
A brief thank-you after a purchase or completed service can keep the relationship open. Ask for feedback in a neutral way, and make it easy for customers to contact you with a concern. If you invite an online review, ask for an honest one; the SBA cautions against offering something in exchange for a positive review. Follow the review platform’s current rules.
Make referrals easy
Tell customers what kinds of referrals are useful and give them a simple way to pass along your contact details. That could be a short digital message they can forward or, where in-person conversations matter, a few business cards. Cards are an optional cash expense; asking customers to share a link or contact information may cost less. Either approach still depends on delivering a service people are willing to recommend. The SBA includes referrals and customer follow-up among its local-marketing suggestions; Microsoft also discusses business cards as a small-business marketing resource. Microsoft, “A Guide to Small Business Marketing Strategy”
Borrow local reach through relevant relationships
Cross-promote with complementary businesses
Look for nearby businesses that serve a similar audience without directly competing with you. Depending on the fit, you might exchange brochures, mention each other in a newsletter, or create a joint offer. Agree on what each business will do and how you will tell whether the arrangement produced inquiries. A partnership can trade staff time and access to an audience for cash, but it is not automatically valuable just because both businesses are local.
Join groups or take part in community events
Professional groups, neighborhood organizations, and community events can put an owner in front of people who may need the business. Choose opportunities that match your customers and the time you can spare. Volunteering or attending may be low in cash cost but high in hours; a sponsorship may require money and should be evaluated against the likely audience, not broad exposure alone. The SBA lists groups, events, and sponsorships among possible local tactics. SBA, “10 Local Marketing Strategies That Work”
Rank #4
Use social media for communication, not just promotion
Choose a social channel your existing customers use, rather than trying to maintain every platform. Share accurate updates, useful photos or short videos, and information that helps customers decide whether or how to visit. Respond politely and promptly to questions when you have capacity. Social media can support customer service as well as promotion, according to the SBA. SBA, “5 Tips to Make Your Small Business Social Media Savvy”
Organic posts and paid promotion are different choices
Organic posts generally require time to create and manage, while paid promotion adds a cash cost. Neither is guaranteed to reach the right people or produce sales. If you decide to test a paid campaign, set a small limit you can afford to lose, define the result you hope to see, and track it. The SBA’s 2017 article used a $100 campaign as an illustration; that is historical advice, not a current price benchmark or promise of results. Review current platform costs, targeting options, and policies before spending.

Offer a useful local story to media
A local publication, radio station, or community outlet may be interested in a genuinely newsworthy story or a useful expert comment. Consider what is relevant to the community—for example, a service that addresses a local need or an owner who can explain a topic readers care about. This is earned media: you can make a thoughtful pitch, but you cannot require or guarantee coverage. It costs staff time to prepare and follow up, and any resulting exposure may be difficult to attribute to sales.
Track responses and refine the mix
Use simple measures you can maintain. The SBA recommends asking new customers how they found the business and using different codes to distinguish print or other offline promotions. Those methods can help connect an inquiry to a source without requiring a complex analytics setup. SBA, “How to Get the Most From Your Marketing Budget”
- Ask each new customer, “How did you hear about us?” Record the answer consistently.
- Use a distinct code or phrase for each offline promotion so you can compare responses.
- Check available platform analytics for activity relevant to your goal, such as customer inquiries or link visits.
- Compare results with your own objectives and the time and cash invested; do not assume one tactic has a universal return.
Give a new approach enough time to produce a meaningful signal for your business, but set a review date so it does not continue indefinitely by default. If it brings relevant inquiries at a cost and workload you can accept, consider continuing. If not, change the audience, message, or channel—or use those resources elsewhere.
