LinkedIn’s annual list of the 10 companies “on the rise” in Seattle includes four businesses headquartered outside the Seattle area. GeekWire’s October 14, 2026 fact-check found that Anthropic, Auger, Whatnot and Armada are based elsewhere, meaning 40% of the list is non-local by headquarters—a calculation from the four-company count and LinkedIn’s 10 entries.
The list is still useful for spotting companies attracting workers and attention in the region, but it is not a clean ranking of Seattle-headquartered startups. Readers evaluating employers, local economic activity or recruiting prospects should separate a company’s corporate headquarters from its Seattle engineering or operating presence.

Which companies on the list are actually Seattle-area based?
GeekWire identifies six entries with headquarters in the broader Seattle area. They span several cities rather than Seattle proper:

| LinkedIn rank | Company | Headquarters city | Seattle-area status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | Truveta | Bellevue | Seattle-area headquarters |
| 5 | Yoodli | Seattle | Seattle-area headquarters |
| 6 | Worldscape | Redmond | Seattle-area headquarters |
| 7 | Overland AI | Seattle | Seattle-area headquarters |
| 8 | Gradial | Seattle | Seattle-area headquarters |
| 10 | Stoke Space | Kent | Seattle-area headquarters |
“Seattle area” therefore includes Bellevue, Redmond and Kent, not only the city of Seattle. That distinction matters when comparing office locations, hiring markets and local tax or economic effects.

Which four entries are headquartered elsewhere?
| Company | Headquarters identified by GeekWire | Seattle-area presence | LinkedIn rank |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anthropic | San Francisco | Not stated in the fact-check | Not stated in the fact-check |
| Auger | Dallas, after an August 2026 move | Bellevue engineering center | Not stated in the fact-check |
| Whatnot | Los Angeles area | Not stated in the fact-check | Not stated in the fact-check |
| Armada | San Francisco, according to its LinkedIn profile | Not stated in the fact-check | Not stated in the fact-check |
The available fact-check establishes the headquarters mismatch and, for Auger, a Bellevue engineering center. It does not provide enough company-by-company detail to claim that every non-local entry has a substantial Seattle workforce. A satellite office can be economically important without making the company Seattle-headquartered.
Why LinkedIn put non-local companies in a Seattle ranking
LinkedIn’s U.S. city lists are built from four signals measured from July 2025 through June 2026:
Rank #2
- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
- Employment growth.
- Engagement with a company’s LinkedIn page.
- Interest in the company’s job openings.
- Ability to recruit talent from LinkedIn’s list of top companies.
For its U.S. rankings, LinkedIn requires a company to have a U.S. headquarters. It does not require a Seattle-area headquarters for the Seattle list. That rule allows a company headquartered in another city to qualify when its employment growth, online engagement, job interest or talent attraction shows strong activity connected to the Seattle market.

LinkedIn’s own 2025 Seattle announcement described the ranking as an annual, data-based look at 10 companies and noted that some firms headquartered elsewhere were building serious technology teams in Seattle. In other words, the list is closer to a measure of companies gaining professional momentum among Seattle’s LinkedIn users than a directory of locally incorporated startups.
Rank #3
What the geographic error means for readers
For job seekers
Use the list as a starting point for investigating employers, then check each company’s current offices and open roles. A Seattle-area job may be attached to a Bellevue engineering center or another local team even when the corporate headquarters is in San Francisco, Dallas or the Los Angeles area. Locations and openings can change, especially after Auger’s August 2026 move to Dallas.
For recruiters
The four ranking signals can reveal where candidates are paying attention, but they do not prove that a company’s decision-makers or largest workforce are local. Verify the hiring team, reporting location and whether a role is tied to a Seattle-area office before treating a ranking position as local-market evidence.
Rank #4
For people tracking Seattle’s startup economy
Count the six Seattle-area headquarters separately from the four outside companies. Combining both groups overstates the number of locally headquartered startups while excluding the real contribution of regional engineering and operating centers. The distinction produces a more accurate view of both corporate control and local employment.

- Check the headquarters. Confirm the city listed on the company’s current profile or official corporate information.
- Check the local footprint. Look for a Seattle, Bellevue, Redmond or Kent office, engineering center or specific local job posting.
- Check the date. LinkedIn’s ranking reflects July 2025–June 2026 data, while GeekWire’s fact-check was published October 14, 2026.
- Separate momentum from geography. A high position indicates performance on LinkedIn’s composite signals, not necessarily a Seattle headquarters.
The criticism—and the fair qualification
GeekWire columnist and angel investor Charles Fitzgerald summarized the frustration this way: “For a Microsoft-owned company, you’d think they’d have better insight into where Seattle is actually located.” The criticism targets the list’s labeling, not the possibility that non-local companies employ people or recruit in the region.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
LinkedIn’s methodology explains how the mismatch occurred: it measures workforce and platform activity, while the Seattle list omits a Seattle-headquarters requirement. Calling the entries “top Seattle startups” therefore needs qualification. “Companies gaining momentum in Seattle’s professional market” is more precise than “Seattle-headquartered startups.”
Bottom line
Six of LinkedIn’s 10 entries are headquartered in the Seattle area: Truveta, Yoodli, Worldscape, Overland AI, Gradial and Stoke Space. Anthropic, Auger, Whatnot and Armada are headquartered elsewhere, although Auger retains a Bellevue engineering center. Treat the list as a snapshot of hiring and engagement signals during July 2025–June 2026, not as a definitive map of Seattle startup headquarters.
