The $34/50GB and $40/75GB Koodo Prepaid plans were real, but they were October 2024 promotional offers—not the current public lineup. Koodo’s current high-data option is listed at $39 per 30 days for 70GB, or 75GB when automatic top-up applies, with unlimited Canada-wide calling and 4G-speed data. Prices and allowances can change, so confirm the plan card at checkout.
That makes Koodo potentially worthwhile for Canadian BYOD users who want Telus-network coverage and prepaid pricing. But Public Mobile currently offers comparable 5G plans, while Lucky Mobile may offer more domestic data for users who do not need roaming.

What happened to the $34/50GB and $40/75GB plans?
MobileSyrup reported on October 11, 2024 that Koodo Prepaid was offering:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Historical price | Standard data | With automatic top-up | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| $34 per 30 days | 50GB | 55GB | 4G |
| $40 per 30 days | 75GB | 80GB | 4G |
The offers were marked as limited time only. The original report is no longer available at its published URL, so these figures should be treated as historical rather than as current Koodo terms. Check Koodo’s official prepaid page and your Koodo Self Serve account before relying on an old headline. Targeted or account-specific offers may still differ from the public plans, but there is no basis to assume every customer can get the 2024 pricing.

Koodo’s current high-data prepaid option
In the August 2026 public-plan snapshot, Koodo listed its highest monthly tier at $39 per 30 days:
- 70GB without automatic top-up
- 75GB on the automatic-top-up presentation
- 4G-speed data
- Unlimited Canada-wide calling
The plan card’s repeated wording is not perfectly clear about how the higher allowance is displayed, so confirm the exact data amount, renewal price and eligibility during checkout. At the listed allowances, the effective data cost is about $0.56 per GB for 70GB, or about $0.52 per GB for 75GB. Those calculations exclude taxes, SIM or eSIM charges and temporary credits.
Koodo’s other public monthly plans were listed as follows:

What “4G” means on Koodo Prepaid
Koodo describes its service as operating on the Telus 4G LTE network. The featured prepaid tier is not a 5G plan. The 2024 coverage reported a 100Mbps cap for Koodo’s 4G prepaid data, but that figure should be treated as a historical reported specification rather than a newly verified current technical limit.
For most users, 4G LTE is sufficient for browsing, social media, navigation, music and ordinary video streaming. Actual performance depends on your phone, signal strength, congestion and location. A 4G plan becomes less attractive if you regularly tether several devices, download large files or specifically want the lowest possible latency and fastest peak speeds.
In other words, “4G” does not mean unusably slow. It means Koodo’s lower price or large allowance comes with a lower speed tier than comparable 5G plans.
Automatic top-up is the important catch
Automatic top-up is not simply a one-time coupon. It authorizes Koodo to replenish the account automatically, and the larger data allowance is tied to that arrangement on the displayed plan cards.

Examples include:
- $25: 4GB versus 5GB
- $30: 10GB versus 15GB
- $35: 25GB versus 30GB
- $39: 70GB versus 75GB
Before activating, check the payment method, charge timing and renewal amount. Also confirm whether the bonus disappears when automatic top-up is disabled or when you change plans. Promotional data can have separate eligibility rules.
Automatic top-up can be convenient if you want uninterrupted service, but it requires a stored payment method and ongoing account monitoring. It is a poor fit if recurring charges are likely to surprise you or if you only want to fund service manually when needed.
Koodo Prepaid versus Public Mobile, Lucky and Freedom
| Provider | Relevant offer in the dated snapshot | Speed | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Koodo Prepaid | $39 for 70GB, or 75GB with automatic top-up | 4G | Large allowance, but no 5G on the featured tier |
| Public Mobile | $35 for 50GB; $40 for 75GB with Canada-U.S.-Mexico access | 5G | Promotions and app-based account management can change |
| Lucky Mobile | $34 for 80GB with automatic top-up | 4G LTE, advertised up to 150Mbps | No international roaming; taxes extra |
| Freedom Mobile | Exact prepaid pricing varies on its live storefront | 4G or 5G depending on plan | Regional coverage and plan terms require careful checking |
Public Mobile is the most direct alternative for speed-conscious shoppers. Its displayed $35 plan includes 50GB at 5G speed, while the $40 plan includes 75GB at 5G speed and Canada-U.S.-Mexico coverage. That can be a better value than Koodo if you want 5G or regularly use service in North America.
Lucky Mobile is compelling for domestic users: its $34 plan card shows 80GB when 25GB of automatic-top-up data is added to 55GB. Lucky says its data is 4G LTE, taxes are extra and its service does not work outside Canada. It may suit someone prioritizing a Bell-network option and lots of Canadian data, but not an international traveller.

Freedom Mobile is worth checking for regional promotions, 5G or roaming features. Its exact prepaid value should be selected from the current storefront rather than inferred from separate monthly or BYOD plans, which are not automatically prepaid offers.
Coverage matters more than the brand comparison table. Check service at home, work and your regular travel destinations. Koodo and Public Mobile are Telus brands or operate in the Telus ecosystem, Lucky is a Bell flanker brand and Freedom has its own network plus nationwide arrangements, but local indoor and rural performance can differ.

Koodo also lists a $159 annual plan for new activations, with 40GB of 4G-speed data and unlimited Canada-wide calling. That works out to $13.25 per month if spread across the year, but the allowance is 40GB for the entire 365-day period, not 40GB every month. The full amount is paid upfront.
There is also a limited-time $100 annual option listed with 400 minutes and 400 texts. Confirm the current terms before choosing it. Annual prepaid can be excellent for light, predictable use, but it is not a substitute for a high-data monthly plan.

Is Koodo Prepaid actually prepaid?
Yes. You pay in advance rather than receiving a conventional postpaid bill, and prepaid activation generally avoids the credit-check and contract structure associated with postpaid service. You still need to maintain enough funds for renewal and manage expiry dates, add-ons and account credits.
The CRTC Wireless Code requires providers to give prepaid customers at least seven calendar days after expiry to top up and retain an existing balance. Koodo’s own terms control details such as refunds, unused balances, promotional credits and add-ons.
Prepaid also does not provide included international roaming by default. Koodo says roaming options can be added through Self Serve, but check current destinations and rates before travelling. Unlimited Canada-wide calling is not the same thing as Canada-U.S. or Canada-U.S.-Mexico service.

Activation checklist
- Check coverage. Test the Telus network at your home, workplace and usual destinations.
- Confirm phone compatibility. The phone should be unlocked and support the network bands and voice requirements Koodo needs. An unlocked phone is not automatically compatible with every network.
- Choose a SIM or eSIM. Koodo directs customers to purchase a prepaid SIM, and its checkout should confirm current eSIM eligibility for your device and activation type.
- Keep your old service active during a number transfer. Start the port during activation, and do not cancel the old provider first. Mismatched account details can cause a transfer to fail.
- Read the plan card carefully. Confirm whether the displayed data is the standard or automatic-top-up amount, the renewal price, calling features and any limited-time condition.
- Review post-activation management. Use Koodo Self Serve for plan changes, add-ons, automatic top-up and roaming decisions.
Who should choose Koodo Prepaid?
Koodo is a good fit if you:
- Want prepaid service on the Telus network.
- Bring your own compatible phone.
- Prefer paying before use and avoiding a conventional postpaid bill.
- Need 25GB or more per month.
- Are comfortable with 4G speeds.
- Mostly use your phone in Canada.
Look elsewhere if you:
- Require 5G or regularly tether heavily.
- Need included U.S. or international roaming.
- Want device financing or a subsidized phone.
- Prefer an eSIM-first signup with minimal account management.
- Live or travel in an area where another network performs better.
- Do not want automatic charges attached to a stored payment method.
Verdict
The old $34/50GB and $40/75GB Koodo headlines should not be used as current pricing. Koodo’s public high-data equivalent is now listed at $39 for 70GB, or 75GB with automatic top-up, and it remains a strong prepaid option if you value Telus-network coverage, unlimited Canada-wide calling and a large Canadian data bucket more than 5G.
Choose Public Mobile instead when 5G or Canada-U.S.-Mexico access matters. Consider Lucky for a domestic Bell-network plan with a large 4G allowance, and check Freedom’s live prepaid page if its regional coverage or current roaming offer better matches your needs.
