This is a historical analyst-note event, not JPMorgan’s latest reported position. Later coverage showed the bank raising its target to $280 in September 2025, then to $315 and $325 in January 2026. The latest located JPMorgan coverage, from June 2026, reported an Overweight rating and a $325 target.

What JPMorgan changed
According to reports summarizing a note from analyst Samik Chatterjee and his team, JPMorgan reduced its 12-month Apple price target by $10, from $240 to $230, on June 26, 2025. That represents a reduction of approximately 4.2%. The bank left its Overweight rating unchanged. Investing.com reported the $240-to-$230 change, as did 9to5Mac.
One secondary report described the previous target as $245 rather than $240. Because the $240 figure appears more consistently in the available coverage, it is the figure used here. The original JPMorgan note was not directly available in the supplied reporting.

A price-target reduction is not the same as an earnings warning or a statement that Apple’s shares are “worth only” $230. It is a revision to an analyst’s valuation model over a stated time horizon.
Why the iPhone 17 outlook looked softer
JPMorgan’s concern was primarily about the timing and sustainability of demand—not an immediate collapse in iPhone sales. The bank expected near-term results to receive support from purchases made earlier than usual, but believed that pull-forward could leave fewer customers available to upgrade during the iPhone 17 cycle.
The reported mechanism had several parts:
- Tariff-related pull-forward: Consumers may have purchased iPhones before possible tariff-driven price increases.
- China subsidies: Smartphone subsidies in China may also have encouraged purchases ahead of the normal upgrade schedule.
- A smaller upgrade pool: Customers who bought earlier would be less likely to upgrade again when the iPhone 17 lineup arrived.
- Incremental product changes: JPMorgan reportedly viewed the iPhone 17 lineup as less likely to create a major upgrade wave than a more substantial product refresh.
- Potentially higher prices: If Apple passed tariff costs to consumers, price increases could further restrain unit demand.
Therefore, “soft iPhone 17 demand” should be understood as JPMorgan’s forecast for slower volume growth and a less powerful upgrade cycle. It should not be presented as independently verified evidence that Apple’s iPhone 17 sales were weak.

How tariffs created both a margin and demand problem
The tariff issue affected JPMorgan’s analysis in two opposing ways. Apple’s shift toward assembling more iPhones in India for the U.S. market could reduce some tariff exposure and help protect gross margins. But moving production does not eliminate every cost or commercial risk.
Apple could still respond to higher costs by raising iPhone prices. That might preserve some dollar revenue or margin per device while making the upgrade decision less attractive to price-sensitive customers. In this framework, tariffs were not merely a cost problem. They were also a question of price elasticity: how many potential buyers would delay, choose a lower-priced model, or skip an upgrade if prices rose?
The supply-chain change could therefore cushion profitability while simultaneously making unit-volume assumptions more difficult. That trade-off helps explain why the tariff discussion was connected to the iPhone 17 forecast rather than treated as a separate issue.

What Apple AI had to do with the target cut
JPMorgan’s AI concern was about timing and monetization, not a definitive claim that Apple’s AI strategy had failed. The available reports described Apple’s AI features and investment as long awaited or delayed, with a slower-than-expected path toward meaningful revenue and earnings benefits.
That distinction matters. AI can create value for Apple in several ways without appearing as a separately reported “AI revenue” line. It could improve device retention, increase upgrade rates, strengthen ecosystem engagement, or support premium pricing. But those benefits may take time to show up in financial results.
In JPMorgan’s 2025 framework, the immediate iPhone 17 cycle was less dependent on AI monetization. A more important payoff was expected later, through a stronger iPhone 18 cycle and faster revenue growth in fiscal 2027. More mature AI capabilities could give customers a stronger reason to upgrade once the features were broadly available and useful.

In other words, delayed AI returns reduced the value JPMorgan assigned to the near-term outlook, while leaving room for AI to remain a longer-term catalyst.

Keeping the Overweight rating while lowering the target may seem contradictory, but the two judgments measure different things. A price target is an estimate of potential value over a specified period. A rating expresses the analyst’s expected risk-adjusted performance relative to the broader market or relevant sector.

This is why describing the June 2025 action as JPMorgan “abandoning” Apple would be inaccurate. It was a near-term reset within a still-positive long-term view.

What the downgrade means for Apple investors
The June 2025 note highlighted five variables investors would need to separate rather than treat as one headline:

- AI timing: When would Apple’s AI investments produce measurable product or financial benefits?
- Expectations: Could Apple deliver strong absolute results but still disappoint if investors expected a larger iPhone 17 cycle?
Investors should also keep the limitations of analyst targets in mind. The $230 figure was an opinion based on JPMorgan’s estimates and valuation assumptions; it was not an Apple forecast, a guarantee, or a formal company warning. An Overweight rating likewise indicates a relative preference, not certainty that the shares will rise.
Most importantly, the $230 target should not be treated as JPMorgan’s current view. The bank subsequently raised its target to $325 and, in the latest located June 2026 coverage, reportedly continued to rate Apple Overweight. Anyone assessing Apple now should consult current company filings, earnings results, market conditions, and the latest available analyst research rather than rely on the June 2025 downgrade.
