A general article cannot confirm whether a particular SBI, HDFC Bank or other bank branch is closing or moving: branch status depends on the exact location and the bank’s current notice. Check your bank’s official branch locator and any communication sent directly to you. If your account is transferred, its IFSC or cheque-book arrangements may change—but a physical branch move does not automatically mean every customer’s account details change.
How to check whether your branch is closing or moving
- Search the bank’s official branch locator using the branch name, address or city. SBI’s contact page directs customers to its branch locator for advanced searches.
- Compare the result with any notice received directly from the bank. Confirm the effective date and destination branch, and ask whether the notice concerns a physical relocation, an outlet closure or merger, or a transfer of your account.
- If the notice is unclear, contact the bank through its official customer-care channels rather than relying on a forwarded message. SBI lists account-related and cheque-book services on its customer-care page.

What RBI guidance says about outlet changes
The Reserve Bank of India’s banking-outlet guidance says customers should be informed well in time when their outlet is merged, closed or shifted. It also sets out additional approval and continuity provisions for rural outlets and sole semi-urban outlets. The rules described depend on the type and location of the outlet; check the bank’s notice and applicable RBI guidance for a specific case.

It depends on what the bank is doing to your account. A branch relocation, closure or merger is not the same as an individual customer’s account transfer, and a move alone does not establish that every customer’s IFSC or account number will change.

HDFC Bank’s published account-transfer guidance provides one bank-specific example: when an account is transferred to another branch, the account number and history remain intact, while a new IFSC is allotted. HDFC says its digital account transfer is limited to a new branch in the same city as the customer’s communication address and describes Re-KYC and other process conditions. These are HDFC’s stated terms, not a rule for SBI or every bank, and the process may change.
Ask your own bank to confirm the current IFSC and account number, and when any change takes effect. Do not update payment details based only on an unverified message.

What happens to your cheque book?
HDFC’s branch-transfer form says the old cheque book contains the former IFSC and asks customers to request a new book with the updated IFSC. It also says existing cheques can still be used. Treat that as HDFC’s form guidance, not a guarantee that every cheque will be accepted in every situation or by every bank.
If your account is affected, ask your bank whether you need a replacement book, whether existing cheque leaves remain acceptable, and whether any limits or deadlines apply. Do not assume another bank follows HDFC’s instructions.

Check salary credits, EMIs and other linked payments
HDFC says salary credits, EMIs and standing instructions typically migrate automatically during its account-transfer process, while advising customers they may still inform employers or billers about the new IFSC. That is specific to HDFC’s described process. Check with your bank and the relevant employer, lender, biller or payment provider about salary credits, loan EMIs, standing instructions, ECS mandates and other payments tied to your account or branch details.

- Is the branch relocating, closing or merging, or is my account being transferred?
- What is the effective date, and which branch will serve my account?
- Will my account number or IFSC change, and what is the new IFSC if applicable?
- Can I use my existing cheque leaves? Should I request a replacement book?
- Will linked credits and payments continue automatically, or should I notify employers, lenders or billers?
