What Toast’s published prices include—and leave open
Toast’s 2026 restaurant POS cost guide lists two starting prices. The $0-per-month Starter Kit is for eligible new, single-location restaurants and describes a one-terminal setup with no upfront hardware cost. Processing fees and terms still apply. The Point of Sale plan starts at $69 per month; hardware choices, additional devices, and add-ons can affect the final cost. Configurations beyond the listed plans receive custom pricing. Toast’s pricing page says its advertised pricing applies to new customers and single locations, includes the first hardware terminal subscription, and may charge for subsequent devices. Terms and conditions apply. Confirm eligibility and every charge in writing rather than treating either starting price as a guaranteed total. For a realistic budget, include software modules, all devices, payment processing, installation or networking, training, integrations, and likely expansion. Toast itself recommends comparing first-year and ongoing costs using the same hardware and transaction assumptions. A low starting price can be offset by processing costs, add-ons, or more equipment.

Hardware: plan around approved devices
Toast says its services may be used only through devices it identifies as compatible and approved, and it may change which devices are approved. That limits operators who want to keep generic tablets or build a system around arbitrary hardware.
Before committing, ask Toast to list the approved model numbers and prices for every device in your intended setup:

Toast’s pricing page says Toast Care is included with each software subscription and is available 24/7/365 by phone or web messaging. That describes the advertised channel and hours; it does not establish response times or independently measured service quality. Toast’s pricing page provides the details.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPayment processing: separate in-person and remote sales
Toast describes card-present payments as in-person swipe, chip, or contactless transactions. Card-not-present payments include online ordering, third-party delivery, phone orders, keyed card details, and online invoices. Toast says card-not-present processing costs more because of higher fraud risk. Ask for pricing assumptions for each meaningful channel; an in-person rate should not be applied to every sale. Toast’s processing-fees page, last updated July 16, 2026, says rates are custom-built around restaurant characteristics.

Toast explains that interchange is set by card networks and paid to the issuing bank. It usually includes a percentage and a per-transaction amount, and varies by card type and transaction method. For an illustration—not a quote—Toast Support’s September 29, 2026 example uses a hypothetical $10 sale: $0.38 interchange (1.80% + $0.20), $0.02 network fees (0.20%), and a $0.15 Toast markup (0.50% + $0.10), totaling $0.55. Your actual cost depends on your agreement, transaction mix, and volume. Toast Support explains its Interchange Plus example.
When evaluating a processing quote, request the rate structure and assumptions, including card types, transaction count, and separate in-person and remote channels. A headline percentage alone may not capture per-transaction charges or differences in card mix.

Dual Pricing: limited eligibility and continuing card fees
Toast Support’s FAQ, last updated September 25, 2026, says Dual Pricing is available only to eligible new U.S. customers when they sign up; it is not yet available to existing Toast customers. The described setup shows guests a card total and a discounted cash total. Toast’s default cash discount is 4%, and it recommends increasing listed menu prices by 4% where card processing costs have not already been incorporated. That is Toast’s product recommendation, not an independent industry average.
Dual Pricing does not eliminate the merchant’s contractual processing fees on card sales. Toast says merchants must display the standard card price and clearly disclose the cash discount; merchants are also responsible for additional requirements in their jurisdiction. Verify local rules and the terms of your own agreement before relying on this approach. Toast Support’s Dual Pricing FAQ describes eligibility and product rules.

How to compare Toast with another POS
Compare the same expected contract period and operating setup, not just monthly software fees. Toast recommends matching hardware, features, transaction assumptions, and contract period. Build a side-by-side estimate using:
- The same number of terminals, handhelds, kitchen displays, and printers
- The same software modules, online ordering, and delivery channels
- Comparable sales volume, card mix, and transaction count
- Setup, installation, networking, migration, and training
- Support, integrations, replacement devices, and likely expansion
Request the written merchant agreement and order details before signing. Confirm software fees, processing structure, device charges, minimums, term, renewal, cancellation, hardware ownership or financing, and what can happen if processing rates or subscription fees change. Public pricing pages do not establish the contract term or cancellation cost for a particular restaurant; those details must come from your offer and agreement.
When Toast is likely to fit
Toast is worth considering if its restaurant-focused workflows match your operation, its approved device options cover the setup you need, and its complete written quote works for your payment mix and budget. It may be a poor fit if keeping existing generic devices is essential, or if you cannot verify the total cost and contract terms before signing. The published starting prices alone are not enough to decide whether Toast is cheaper or more expensive than another POS.
