Two Canadian Cybertruck owners told Drive Tesla that Tesla declined to take their trucks as trade-ins. That is evidence of two reported cases—not proof that Tesla has banned all Cybertruck trade-ins or that the company is “cooked.” Tesla Canada’s public guidance says eligible trucks may be traded toward a Tesla purchase, but it does not say whether Cybertruck qualifies. The practical answer is to request an offer for your specific vehicle and compare the net proceeds with other sale options.
What is known about the reported refusals?
In an August 20, 2026 report, Drive Tesla said Canadian owners Jay Zee and Jamie Mcwhirter reported that Tesla would not accept their Cybertrucks as trade-ins. The report gives owner-reported details: Zee’s truck had about 72,000 km and was approximately two years old; Mcwhirter’s had 120,000 km. Those accounts are not population-level evidence, and the report does not establish a written Tesla policy applying to every Canadian Cybertruck.

Drive Tesla said Tesla had accepted Cybertruck trade-ins in the United States since May 2025. That is the outlet’s report, not a model-specific guarantee on Tesla’s U.S. support page. Tesla’s public U.S. and Canadian pages describe eligible vehicle types generally, without naming Cybertruck as accepted or excluded.

Tesla Canada says it accepts eligible cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs toward a new or pre-owned Tesla purchase. Its page lists exclusions and explains that the owner submits vehicle details through a Tesla Account. It does not specifically answer whether a Cybertruck qualifies, so the general wording does not resolve the reported refusals.

- Submit the vehicle information through your Tesla Account. The requested details include the Cybertruck’s VIN, mileage, postal code, and photos.
- Wait for Tesla to contact you with an offer. Tesla says valuation depends on vehicle information and market conditions; there is no guaranteed offer or value on the public page.
- If you accept, hand over the vehicle at the delivery appointment. The trade-in is applied as part of a Tesla purchase, rather than being a standalone cash sale.
Read the offer in terms of what you will actually receive: account for any loan payoff, negative equity, and the cost or timing of replacing the vehicle. Tesla’s general trade-in guidance describes an application and offer process, not a promise to buy every vehicle in an otherwise eligible category.
Why might Tesla decline a particular Cybertruck?
Tesla has not publicly explained the reported Canadian decisions in the sources available here. Drive Tesla suggested that tariffs, pricing and resale uncertainty could be factors, but presented that as speculation, not a Tesla explanation. Its article cited a new Cybertruck price of up to C$167,990 in discussing tariffs; that figure is tied to the outlet’s 2026 report and its stated context, not a current quote for every configuration.

Drive Tesla also cited 80,000 km as the standard warranty distance in its report. That figure does not establish a Tesla trade-in cutoff, and the reported 120,000 km truck does not prove mileage was the reason for refusal. A vehicle-specific offer can depend on details and market conditions; without Tesla’s explanation, the reason for either reported outcome remains unknown.
What to do if Tesla will not make an offer
- Ask Tesla for a vehicle-specific decision. Submit the details through the published account process and ask whether the vehicle is ineligible or whether Tesla simply is not making an offer under current conditions.
- Compare independent valuations. Contact prospective dealers or buyers directly and confirm they will consider a Cybertruck in your region and condition. Do not assume a marketplace or dealer accepts the model, or that an online estimate is a completed offer.
- Compare net proceeds, not just headline value. Include loan payoff, any negative equity, fees, timing, and the work involved in a private sale. Tesla’s trade-in route is linked to a Tesla purchase; another buyer may have different requirements.
- For a private sale, prepare the account transfer. Tesla’s Cybertruck Owner’s Manual says the seller can factory reset the vehicle and remove it from or transfer it through the Tesla account in the app. The manual notes some subscriptions, upgrades, or features may not transfer; confirm the specific items that matter before completing a sale.
What Tesla’s filing does—and does not—tell owners
Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K says the company integrates Tesla and non-Tesla trade-ins with new-vehicle sales and remarkets acquired trade-ins directly or through third parties. That describes its general used-vehicle business; it does not establish that Tesla accepts a particular Cybertruck, in Canada or elsewhere.
