Yes—selling on Etsy can still be worth it in 2026, but it is not automatically profitable just because the listing fee is low. Etsy is most attractive for handmade, personalized, vintage, craft-supply, wedding, gift and digital products with healthy margins. It is less attractive for low-priced or labor-intensive products, sellers who already have their own audience, and businesses that need complete control over customer relationships.
For a U.S. seller, ordinary Etsy fees commonly total roughly 10%–13% of an order before product costs, shipping, taxes, refunds and advertising. An order attributed to Etsy’s Offsite Ads can incur an additional 12% or 15%. The strongest strategy for many sellers is therefore Etsy for discovery plus an owned website or another sales channel for diversification.

Who is Etsy worth it for?
| Seller situation | Likely verdict |
|---|---|
| New seller testing a handmade product | Worth testing |
| High-margin personalized gifts | Often worth it |
| Low-priced commodity products | Often difficult |
| Established brand with its own audience | Consider Shopify or a hybrid |
| Product with broad demand and repeatable fulfillment | Test Amazon Handmade too |
| Business dependent on repeat customers | Build an owned store and email strategy |
The right question is not whether Etsy produces sales. It is whether those sales produce enough profit for the time, risk and loss of customer ownership involved.
Measure:
- Net profit per order—not just revenue.
- Your effective fee rate after listings, payment processing and advertising.
- Production, customization, messaging, packaging and shipping time.
- Customer-acquisition cost and repeat-purchase rate.
- How much demand Etsy provides that you could not acquire independently.
- Your exposure to policy changes, reserves, disputes, search changes and account restrictions.
Etsy fees in 2026
Etsy’s exact costs vary by bank-account location, currency, taxes, deposits and seller status. The following example uses the principal charges for a seller with a U.S. bank account. Check the Etsy Fees & Payments Policy and Etsy’s payment-processing page before pricing products.
#1 Best Overall
Listing fee: $0.20
Etsy charges $0.20 per listing whether or not the item sells. Listings generally expire after four months, and automatic renewal can create another $0.20 charge. Multiple-quantity listings can also renew as units sell.
That means 100 initial listings cost $20 before any sale occurs. The fee is minor for a $100 product but significant for a $5 product. Include unsold listings, renewals and quantity-based renewals in your annual model.
Transaction fee: 6.5%
Etsy charges 6.5% of the displayed listing price plus seller-charged shipping and gift wrapping. For U.S. sellers, the transaction fee does not apply to sales tax. Personalization charges are included in the transaction-fee base.

Moving part of a product’s price into shipping or personalization does not avoid the fee.
Payment processing: 3% plus $0.25 in the United States
For a U.S. bank account, Etsy Payments charges 3% plus $0.25 per order. The processing fee is assessed on the total sale amount, including shipping and applicable sales tax. International rates differ.
Offsite Ads: 12% or 15% on attributed orders
Offsite Ads are separate from ordinary Etsy sales and from Etsy Ads. Etsy promotes listings on external sites and charges a fee only when it credits an order to that advertising. The attribution window is generally 30 days after the buyer clicks the ad.
- 15%: generally for shops below the relevant $10,000 prior-365-day sales threshold that have not crossed it and have not opted out.
- 12%: once a shop reaches at least $10,000 in qualifying sales over the prior 365 days.
- Mandatory participation: after reaching the threshold, participation becomes compulsory under Etsy’s stated policy, and the 12% rate remains applicable for the lifetime of the shop.
- Cap: the Offsite Ads fee on an attributed order is capped at $100.
The threshold is not simply total lifetime revenue. Etsy’s calculation uses a prior-365-day period and excludes certain amounts, including Etsy fees, separately charged shipping, taxes, gift wrap, Pattern orders and in-person payment orders. Read the current policy for the precise rules.

Etsy Ads
Etsy Ads are on-platform advertisements. Sellers set a daily budget, and the cost depends on the budget, listings, bids and results. It is not a fixed percentage that applies to every sale.
Rank #2
Etsy Plus and Pattern
Etsy Plus is an optional $10-per-month subscription with stated listing and Etsy Ads credits. Pattern, Etsy’s website tool, includes a 30-day free trial and then costs $15 per month, excluding possible taxes and domain charges. Pattern offers a limited Etsy-connected storefront, not the same level of independence as a full ecommerce platform.
Currency conversion and location-specific fees
Etsy states that sellers listing in a currency different from their payment-account currency may incur a 2.5% currency-conversion fee. Some countries may also have regulatory operating fees, deposit fees, VAT on seller fees or other location-specific charges.
What does a $30 Etsy sale really leave?
Consider this U.S. example:
- Item price: $30
- Seller-charged shipping: $5
- Order total before sales tax: $35
- No Offsite Ads attribution
- One listing
- No Etsy Ads, refunds, currency conversion, Etsy Plus, shipping-label cost or product costs
| Charge | Calculation | Approximate amount |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | One listing | $0.20 |
| Transaction fee | 6.5% × $35 | $2.28 |
| Payment processing | 3% × $35 + $0.25 | $1.30 |
| Total Etsy fees | $3.78 |
The fees are approximately 10.8% of the $35 order total, or approximately 12.6% of the $30 item price alone. This is before materials, labor, packaging, postage and taxes.
If Etsy attributes the order to Offsite Ads, the additional charge would be:
- 12% × $35 = $4.20, raising total Etsy fees to approximately $7.98.
- 15% × $35 = $5.25, raising total Etsy fees to approximately $9.03.
The result changes with country, shipping, tax treatment, order value, listing renewals, refunds and advertising. Offsite Ads do not apply to every Etsy sale, but they can materially change the economics of an attributed order.
Why Etsy can be worth it
It supplies marketplace discovery
A new independent store must normally create its own traffic through search, social media, email, advertising, partnerships or content. Etsy supplies a marketplace search system, reviews, checkout and buyer trust in one place.
That does not guarantee sales. Etsy is competitive, and visibility depends on product-market fit, listing quality, customer experience and marketplace rules. But the built-in discovery can be valuable to a seller without an established audience.

There is no mandatory monthly subscription for standard Etsy marketplace selling. The $0.20 listing fee allows a seller to test several products without immediately paying for a full ecommerce stack.
“Low cost” does not mean cost-free. Photography, inventory, packaging, postage, software, labor, taxes and advertising can exceed the platform fees.
Payment and checkout infrastructure are included
Etsy Payments handles checkout and supported payment methods, subject to eligibility and location. This reduces the technical work involved in launching a store.
The marketplace fits visual and giftable products
Handmade, personalized and gift-oriented products often benefit from Etsy’s listing format, search behavior, reviews and personalization features. This is a strategic fit, not a promise that every handmade product will sell.

Etsy can help a seller learn which designs, keywords, price points and personalization options attract attention. Use that information to improve the business—but do not treat Etsy revenue as owned demand. Marketplace traffic, search rankings, reviews and customer communications remain governed by Etsy.
Who should probably avoid Etsy?
- Generic commodities: products competing mainly on price are difficult to differentiate in a crowded marketplace.
- Low-margin products: a margin below roughly 30% before marketplace fees leaves little room for advertising, refunds and labor.
- Very low-priced products: the $0.20 listing fee and $0.25 payment-processing charge consume a larger share of a small order.
- Labor-heavy custom work: proofing, revisions, messages and scope changes can erase the apparent margin.
- Businesses built around repeat customers: an owned website and email strategy provide more control over retention.
- Sellers unable to meet service expectations: slow processing, poor communication, late shipping and weak resolution practices can harm reviews and account standing.
- Products outside Etsy’s permitted categories: review Etsy’s current Creativity Standards and prohibited-item rules before listing. Production partners and print-on-demand arrangements must meet current policy requirements, including disclosure where required.
The disadvantages that affect the decision
Fees compress margins
The meaningful comparison is not “$0.20 per listing.” It is the combined cost of listing, transaction, payment processing, possible Offsite Ads, optional Etsy Ads, shipping, refunds and the labor required to operate the shop.
You do not fully own the customer relationship
Etsy controls the checkout environment, marketplace discovery and many customer-communication rules. An Etsy buyer is not equivalent to a customer on your own email list. You may operate elsewhere, but Etsy prohibits directing an Etsy-initiated transaction off-platform to avoid Etsy fees. See the Fees & Payments Policy.
Policy and cash-flow risk exist
Possible business disruptions include listing removals, intellectual-property complaints, account suspension, payment reserves or delayed funds, refunds, disputes and changes to search or advertising systems. Etsy does not place every new shop on a reserve, but sellers should understand the current payment policies and keep cash available for delayed deposits, refunds and replacements.

Offsite Ads can be difficult to price
A seller may incur an Offsite Ads fee even without manually buying an ad for that particular order. Build an expected attributed-order rate into pricing, especially after the shop reaches the threshold for mandatory participation.

Labor is often the hidden expense
Track design, production, personalization, customer messages, proofing, packaging, listing maintenance, shipping administration, returns and replacements. A product can have an attractive gross margin but an unacceptable hourly wage.

| Platform | Best for | Main advantage | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Etsy | Handmade, personalized, vintage, craft supplies and digital products | Built-in marketplace demand | Fees and platform dependence |
| Shopify | Brands with an audience or repeat customers | Store and customer-experience control | You must generate traffic |
| Amazon Handmade | Broad-demand, repeatable handmade products | Amazon reach and fulfillment ecosystem | 15% referral fee and stricter operations |
| eBay | Vintage, collectibles, resale, parts and one-off items | Broad category reach | Less focused handmade positioning |
| Depop | Fashion, vintage clothing and streetwear | Social-fashion audience | Narrower fit and changing fee model |
| Own website plus marketplace | Growth-stage sellers | Diversification and control | More systems to manage |
Shopify
Shopify is generally better for sellers with an audience, strong branding, repeat purchases or a plan to invest in marketing. It provides an independent storefront, catalog, checkout and multichannel tools.
Its advantages include more control over branding, bundles, subscriptions, memberships, wholesale and retention flows. Its disadvantages include a monthly subscription and responsibility for traffic, search, email, analytics, apps and conversion optimization. Regional prices vary; check the U.S. pricing page rather than converting another region’s plan.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe fair comparison is not Etsy’s percentage versus Shopify’s payment rate. Compare Etsy fees plus marketplace labor with Shopify’s subscription, payment fees, apps, marketing and traffic-acquisition costs.
Amazon Handmade
Amazon Handmade is worth testing when a product has broad demand and can be fulfilled consistently. Amazon states that approved Handmade sellers pay a 15% referral fee or $0.30 per unit, whichever is greater, and that the ongoing Professional selling-plan fee is waived after the first month for approved Handmade sellers.
Amazon requires an application and has a more structured operating environment. Amazon Custom can support personalization, but customized products must be seller-fulfilled and cannot use FBA. Amazon Handmade is therefore not automatically cheaper than Etsy.
eBay
eBay is often a better fit for vintage, collectibles, used goods, parts, resale and one-off products that do not fit Etsy’s marketplace identity. Fees vary by category, seller location, store status, performance and promotion choices, so do not rely on a single universal percentage.
Depop
Depop is designed primarily for fashion, vintage apparel and streetwear. Etsy’s 2024 annual report stated that Depop removed seller transaction fees for U.S. and U.K. sellers in 2024 and introduced a buyer fee of up to 5% plus a flat fee. Because those terms can change, verify the current structure before relying on the comparison.
Best Value
Use your numbers to decide
Calculate profit per order using:
Net profit per order = sale revenue + shipping collected - materials - labor - packaging - postage - Etsy listing fee - Etsy transaction fee - Etsy Payments fee - Offsite Ads or Etsy Ads cost - refunds/replacements - software and overhead allocation
Then answer:
- What is the average order value?
- What percentage of the order goes to materials?
- How many minutes does production require?
- What hourly wage should the maker receive?
- What are average packaging and postage costs?
- What share of orders is attributed to Offsite Ads?
- How many listings are created and renewed each year?
- Is the buyer likely to purchase again?
- Do you already have social, search, email or wholesale demand?
- Can the business survive delayed deposits, refunds or a sales slowdown?
Low-priced products need a special calculation
For a $5 or $10 product, the flat listing and payment fees, packaging, postage, support time and replacement risk can dominate the economics. Bundles, minimum order quantities, personalization upgrades or a higher average order value may work better than selling individual low-ticket items.
Free shipping is still a cost
Free shipping changes the presentation, not the economics. Include postage and packaging in the product price. Seller-charged shipping also forms part of Etsy’s transaction and payment-processing calculations where applicable.
Digital products are not automatically passive income
Digital downloads can have attractive gross margins, but sellers still face design and support time, copycats, copyright and trademark risk, download disputes, policy dependence and heavy competition.

Define what is included, the number of revisions, proof-approval procedures, processing time, delivery expectations and refund terms. Higher prices do not automatically compensate for unlimited collaboration.
International sellers and taxes
Do not apply the U.S. example globally. Payment-processing rates, regulatory operating fees, deposits, VAT on seller fees and currency charges vary by bank-account location.
For many U.S. orders, Etsy calculates, collects and remits marketplace sales tax. That does not eliminate the seller’s income-tax, business-tax, recordkeeping or other legal responsibilities.
The most defensible strategy: Etsy plus another channel
For many sellers, the practical choice is not Etsy versus an independent website:
- Use Etsy to test products and reach marketplace shoppers.
- Track profit, labor time, repeat demand and advertising attribution.
- Build an owned website and permitted audience-building strategy.
- Add direct sales, bundles, repeat-purchase incentives and wholesale where appropriate.
- Keep Etsy as one acquisition source rather than the entire business.
Maintain independent backups of product photography, listing copy, inventory and order records. A second channel and cash reserve reduce dependence on any one marketplace without assuming that Etsy will take a particular future action.
Final verdict
Selling on Etsy is worth testing in 2026 when your products fit the marketplace, your margins absorb roughly 10%–13% in ordinary U.S. Etsy fees, and Etsy provides customers you could not easily acquire yourself. It becomes less attractive when products are low-priced, labor-heavy or commodity-like, or when Offsite Ads and shipping turn a nominally profitable order into a poor hourly wage.
Use Etsy for discovery and validation, but build a second channel if the shop becomes important to your income. The goal is not simply to sell on Etsy; it is to ensure that Etsy sales remain profitable and that the business can survive beyond one platform.
