Is Samsung Ending SATA SSD Production? What Buyers Need to Know in 2026

No confirmed Samsung announcement says it is ending SATA SSD production. Samsung denied a late-2025 phase-out rumor, and its U.S. 870 EVO product page and SSD support resources remained active in 2026. That is evidence against an announced shutdown—not a promise that every capacity will stay in production or on shelves.

Where the Samsung SATA SSD rumor came from

On December 15, 2025, reports amplified a claim from Moore’s Law Is Dead that Samsung might stop producing consumer SATA SSDs and announce the move as soon as January 2026. The reported rationale was that NAND capacity would be more valuable in enterprise, AI, and NVMe products. The claim was attributed to industry sources, but it was not accompanied by a public Samsung roadmap or production notice. PC Gamer’s account of the rumor and denial and TechRadar’s account of the January prediction describe it as a reported possibility, not a confirmed roadmap.

On December 16, Samsung told Wccftech: “The rumor regarding the phasing out of Samsung SATA or other SSDs is false,” according to PC Gamer’s report. The predicted January announcement did not appear in the sources reviewed by August 16, 2026. That makes the forecast unsubstantiated; it does not reveal whether Samsung has made private changes to output or allocation.

What Samsung’s denial does—and does not—establish

The statement is direct evidence of Samsung’s public position against a phase-out. It does not spell out production volumes, guarantee continuous manufacturing, or promise that every model, capacity, and region will remain available. “Ending SATA SSD production” can mean different things, so distinguish among:

  • A product-family exit: ending a broad category such as consumer SATA SSDs.
  • Reduced allocation: making fewer drives without formally discontinuing the category.
  • A model or capacity discontinuation: ending one SKU while other SATA products remain.
  • A regional or retail shortage: a product is hard to find locally, even if it has not been discontinued.
  • A different product segment: consumer SATA, enterprise SATA, and NAND component production are not interchangeable categories.

Samsung’s broad denial addresses the reported phase-out; it is not a detailed supply forecast for each of those categories.

What Samsung’s official pages showed in 2026

Samsung’s U.S. site continued to list the 870 EVO 4TB SATA 2.5-inch SSD. The cited product page advertises sequential speeds of up to 560MB/s read and 530MB/s write; Samsung’s product information specifies a SATA 6Gb/s interface with backward compatibility. Those are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee of real-world speed in every computer.

Together, these pages show official product and support activity in 2026. They do not prove that every capacity was being manufactured continuously or that stock was available from every seller.

Why the rumor sounded plausible

The business logic is understandable, but it is not proof of a shutdown. SATA III has a 6Gb/s interface ceiling, while NVMe drives can use PCIe for substantially higher throughput. Samsung’s 2026 interim report discusses PCIe client SSDs including the 990 EVO Plus and 9100 PRO, while its July 8, 2026 PM1763 announcement describes mass production of an enterprise PCIe 6.0 SSD for AI and high-performance computing infrastructure. These examples show attention to faster client and data-center products; they do not confirm that Samsung is abandoning SATA.

Manufacturers may have incentives to direct constrained NAND, controller, packaging, and manufacturing capacity toward products with stronger margins or growth. A business could therefore reduce SATA allocations or discontinue slow-moving capacities without ending the whole category. Samsung has not confirmed that this is what it is doing.

Should you buy a SATA SSD now?

Choose based on compatibility, urgency, workload, and price—not the rumor alone.

Buy SATA when compatibility is the deciding factor

  • Your desktop or laptop has a 2.5-inch SATA bay but no compatible M.2 NVMe slot.
  • You need a straightforward replacement for an existing SATA drive.
  • You want secondary storage for a game library, backup target, or NAS where SATA performance is adequate.
  • A reputable drive is available at a reasonable price and you need the storage now.

The 870 EVO is one option for a system that needs a 2.5-inch SATA drive; check the computer’s fit, capacity support, and connection requirements before ordering.

Consider NVMe when the system and workload can use it

If your computer supports M.2 PCIe NVMe and you regularly move large files, edit video, or use a scratch drive for demanding work, compare current NVMe options. NVMe can offer much higher bandwidth, but it is not a drop-in replacement for a 2.5-inch SATA drive. M.2 describes a physical form factor, not the storage protocol: check the device manual to confirm that the slot supports NVMe rather than SATA M.2. A Samsung 990 EVO Plus or 9100 PRO is relevant only when the system supports the required PCIe interface; the 9100 PRO is aimed at high-performance systems and is not a useful upgrade for a SATA-only platform. Samsung’s 9100 PRO product page provides its product details.

Do not treat a stockout as proof of discontinuation

One missing capacity, an empty retailer listing, or an unusually expensive marketplace offer does not establish that Samsung has ended production. Check whether the exact SKU is listed in your country, whether the seller is reputable, and whether the warranty applies in your region. Compare the total price with compatible NVMe alternatives rather than paying a rumor-driven premium. Samsung’s U.S. page and support pages are useful evidence of official listing and support, not a guarantee of local inventory.

Buying risks if supply is tight

  • Seller and warranty: Prefer Samsung, an authorized retailer, or a reputable system builder. A Samsung-branded marketplace listing alone does not establish that the stock is genuine or covered by your local warranty.
  • Used or misleading drives: A constrained market can make used drives sold as new, altered-capacity devices, and gray-market imports harder to assess. Check the seller, return terms, and warranty before purchase.
  • Model revisions: Samsung’s support page references multiple 870 EVO revisions and firmware branches. Do not assume every retail unit has identical components or performance; compare evidence for the exact model and revision when that matters.
  • Historical prices: A Samsung U.S. MSRP file listed $129.99 for a 1TB 870 EVO in September 2025. That is a historical MSRP, not an August 2026 street price; it should not be used as a current price quote. Samsung’s September 2025 MSRP file.
