The company said it would use the money to develop its Adaptive Security Platform, expand sales and marketing, and support international growth. The round backed Illumio’s effort to secure applications and workloads inside data centers and clouds, not just defend the network perimeter.
Who invested in Illumio’s $100 million round?
Illumio said the Series C had closed on April 14, 2015. New investors BlackRock Funds and Accel Partners joined existing backers Formation 8, Andreessen Horowitz, and General Catalyst. Individual participants included Microsoft chairman John W. Thompson, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, and Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang. Illumio reported that the financing took its cumulative investment above $142 million over the preceding 27 months. Illumio’s announcement

The company said proceeds would fund research and development, sales and marketing expansion, and international expansion as demand for its Adaptive Security Platform grew. Co-founder and CEO Andrew Rubin described the financing as enabling Illumio to pursue its market more aggressively and extend the platform into more data-center and computing environments. What Illumio meant by securing a dynamic data center
Traditional perimeter defenses focus on controlling traffic entering or leaving a network. Illumio’s pitch was that this leaves a gap inside enterprise environments: once attackers get past the perimeter, applications and workloads can still be exposed to movement across the data center or cloud. The company positioned its platform as an additional, more granular layer—not as a claim that firewalls had no role.

Illumio said its Adaptive Security Platform (ASP) visualized application traffic and applied continuous, scalable security policy and enforcement. Instead of relying only on fixed network boundaries, the approach used context and relationships between workloads to program policy dynamically. SecurityWeek characterized this as a move from a static security model toward a context-aware dynamic one. SecurityWeek’s contemporaneous report
Rubin said perimeter solutions left “80 percent of the data center and cloud exposed and vulnerable.” That figure was Illumio’s own 2015 claim; the cited announcement does not provide independent validation or a measurement method, so it should not be treated as an established industry statistic. What environments and integrations did the platform cover?
Illumio described ASP as applying to bare-metal servers, virtual machines, containers, and virtual desktop infrastructure across data centers and public clouds. Contemporary coverage also reported support for Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and traditional data centers, as well as work with NGINX and F5 load balancers for dynamic policy enforcement. These descriptions reflect the platform’s stated capabilities and reported integrations at the time of the 2015 financing, not a current compatibility list. TechCrunch Fortune
How Illumio’s approach differed from perimeter-only security
| Area | Perimeter-focused approach | Illumio’s 2015 ASP description |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage focus | Controls traffic at network boundaries | Visualizes and enforces policy for applications and workloads within data centers and clouds |
| Policy behavior | Often organized around comparatively static network rules | Uses context and workload relationships to apply dynamic policy |
| Workloads and environments | Primarily network-level scope | Bare-metal servers, VMs, containers, and VDI; data centers and public clouds |
| Reported ecosystem | Not specified in the cited descriptions | NGINX and F5 load-balancer integrations were reported at the time |
The distinction is one of scope and policy granularity: perimeter controls govern boundaries, while Illumio’s stated aim was to enforce policy between applications and workloads as infrastructure changes. The two approaches can be complementary; the financing announcement described an expansion of Illumio’s platform, not the elimination of network security.

Why the financing mattered
The round was significant as a financing event because it brought in two named new institutional investors alongside existing venture backers and prominent technology executives, while giving Illumio capital for product development and commercial expansion. The announcement’s business rationale was to meet demand and extend the platform across more computing environments. It does not establish that the round itself proved product effectiveness or long-term commercial success.
