If You’re a Student, These Are the Apple Products You Should Get for Back to School

For most students, the 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 is the safest Apple purchase for the 2026 academic year. It offers the best balance of portability, performance, battery life, and compatibility for ordinary college work. Choose the $599 MacBook Neo if your budget is tight and your work is mostly documents and web apps; choose an iPad Air with an Apple Pencil if handwritten notes and PDF markup matter; and choose a MacBook Pro only when your major involves sustained creative, engineering, development, or data-heavy workloads.

These recommendations apply primarily to U.S. students and use Apple’s listed education pricing as of August 16, 2026. Check your school’s software requirements before buying.

The quick answer

You need the cheapest new Mac MacBook Neo Suitable for documents, research, presentations, and video calls
You already own a capable laptop iPad Air with M4 Useful for notes, reading, diagrams, and PDF annotation
You edit video, create 3D work, code extensively, or run demanding technical software MacBook Pro Better suited to sustained heavy workloads, graphics, memory, cooling, and ports

Apple’s current U.S. promotion runs through September 24, 2026, while supplies last, for qualified purchasers. The advertised Apple Gift Card values are:

Qualifying product Gift Card
MacBook Pro $150
MacBook Air $100
iPad Pro $100
iPad Air $100

See the official promotion terms before checkout. Apple’s terms say the customer is charged for all items in the cart, including the Apple Gift Card, with a discount equal to the gift-card value applied to the eligible product. In other words, do not treat the card as an unconditional cash rebate.

For example, a $1,199 MacBook Air plus a $100 Gift Card may represent $1,099 in theoretical value—but only if you will actually use that $100 on Apple products or services. Compare the cash price with retailer discounts and refurbished pricing before deciding.

Education eligibility varies by location and purchase route. Students, educators, and parents buying for eligible students may qualify in some circumstances, but verification requirements are not universal. Review Apple’s current eligibility rules; secondary coverage also notes that services such as UNiDAYS may be required in some regions.

Best Apple laptop for most students: 13-inch MacBook Air with M5

The 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 is the default recommendation for most college students. Apple lists it from $1,199 with U.S. education pricing.

It is a good fit for writing papers, research, browser-based coursework, Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, programming, video calls, communications, and moderate creative work. Its compact size also makes it easier to carry between classrooms, libraries, dorms, and home.

  • BUILT FOR COLLEGE. AND BEYOND — MacBook Air with the M5 chip packs blazing speed and powerful AI capabilities into an incredibly portable design. And with up to 18 hours of battery life,* this thin and light powerhouse is ready to take on almost any major, just about anywhere.

The Air’s fanless design is quiet and convenient in classrooms and libraries. Independent student coverage identifies the 13-inch MacBook Air as a strong choice for most students and reports a 512GB base storage configuration and more than 15 hours of battery life; check the exact U.S. configuration and Apple’s published specifications before ordering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the 15-inch Air instead if you routinely split the screen between multiple documents, code, or research windows and are willing to trade some portability for more workspace.

When the MacBook Air is not the right choice

  • You need sustained video rendering, 3D work, large software builds, simulations, or other prolonged high-load tasks.
  • Your course requires Windows-only software and your school does not provide a compatible virtual or remote lab.
  • You need professional ports, graphics options, or memory configurations available only on higher-end models.

A MacBook Air is not automatically a bad choice for technical students, but the department’s exact requirements matter more than a general buying guide.

Best budget Mac: MacBook Neo

The MacBook Neo is Apple’s lowest-cost new Mac, listed from $599 with education pricing. It makes sense for students whose work consists mainly of essays, web research, presentations, email, video calls, streaming, and other ordinary productivity.

Its lower price does not make it equivalent to a MacBook Air. The Neo has less headroom for demanding applications and may be a poor long-term choice for students who later need professional creative software, virtualization, advanced development tools, engineering applications, or large projects.

Buy it when keeping the initial price low is the priority and your schoolwork is clearly light. Avoid it if you are choosing it only because you are uncertain about your major and want to keep every future option open. Check the current configuration’s memory, storage, ports, display, authentication features, external-display support, and software compatibility before ordering.

Best for demanding majors: MacBook Pro

MacBook Pro is justified for students doing sustained video editing, animation, photography, music production, 3D design, architecture, engineering, software development, machine-learning work, or large data projects. Apple lists it from $1,899 with education pricing.

Its advantages can include more graphics performance, active cooling, memory options, display quality, and ports. Those features matter when the computer will spend hours compiling, exporting, rendering, simulating, or processing large projects.

Most students should not buy a MacBook Pro merely for “future-proofing.” If your work is primarily documents, browser tabs, presentations, and video calls, the extra cost and weight are difficult to justify. Likewise, do not pay for the highest-tier chip unless your actual software and workload require it.

Choosing an iPad

iPad Air with M4: the best iPad for most students

The iPad Air with M4 starts at $699 with education pricing. It is the most compelling iPad for students who already have a capable computer and want a tablet for handwritten notes, reading, PDF markup, diagrams, digital art, or portable secondary work.

An Apple Pencil can be worthwhile for lecture notes, mathematical notation, engineering diagrams, sketching, and annotating course materials. Apple highlights handwriting-to-text conversion, PDF markup, and Math Notes as iPad use cases. Confirm Pencil compatibility with the exact iPad generation before buying.

The Air is usually a companion rather than a laptop replacement. Keyboard cases, storage upgrades, cases, and a Pencil can substantially raise the total cost. Compare the complete bundle with a MacBook Air before using an iPad as your only computer.

Standard iPad: reading and light schoolwork

The standard iPad starts at $429 with education savings. It is appropriate for reading, streaming lectures, email, light note-taking, and basic school apps. It can be a sensible low-cost secondary device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is less suitable when you need advanced creative performance, extensive multitasking, a large writing canvas, or demanding professional applications. Do not assume every Apple Pencil or keyboard works with every iPad generation.

iPad Pro M5: specialist tablet

The iPad Pro starts at $1,099 with education pricing. It is aimed at students who specifically need a premium tablet display and high-end performance for illustration, video, design, 3D, or a tablet-first workflow.

It is not automatically a better laptop. Once you add a Pencil and keyboard, the total may approach or exceed MacBook pricing, while iPadOS may still lack the desktop software, file-management flexibility, or testing tools required by a course.

iPad mini

The iPad mini starts at $549 with education savings. Its small size makes it useful for reading, flash cards, quick reference, and commuting. It is not the best choice for long handwritten notes, extensive split-screen work, or replacing a laptop.

Do you need a Mac, an iPad, or both?

Choose a MacBook as your primary device if you write substantial papers, need conventional multitasking and file management, use coding tools, require desktop applications, or want one computer for several years.

Apple 2026 MacBook Air 15-inch Laptop with M5 chip: Built for AI, 15.3-inch Liquid Retina Display, 16GB Unified Memory, 512GB SSD, 12MP Center Stage Camera, Touch ID, Wi-Fi 7; Midnight
  • TEAR THROUGH TOUGH ASSIGNMENTS — With its faster CPU and unified memory, the M5 chip delivers even more performance and fluidity across apps, making multitasking and creative workflows smooth and responsive. • A BRILLIANT 15.3-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Air supports 1 billion colors, making photos and videos pop with rich contrast and sharp detail, and text appears supercrisp. So everything — from class presentations to movies to games — looks truly stunning.

Choose an iPad if you already own a suitable computer and genuinely value handwritten notes, PDF markup, drawing, diagrams, or instant-on tablet use.

Buy both only when the combination fits your budget without weakening the primary-device purchase and you know how you will use the iPad. Apple’s ecosystem features—including AirDrop, Sidecar, Universal Control, and iPhone Mirroring—can make a Mac-and-iPad setup convenient, but convenience is not proof that two devices are necessary. Apple describes these workflows on its college-student education page.

Accessories worth considering

  • Apple Pencil: Buy one for handwritten notes, PDF annotation, diagrams, or art—not simply because you bought an iPad.
  • Keyboard case: Useful for substantial typing on an iPad, but compare the complete price and weight with a MacBook Air.
  • Protective sleeve: A practical choice for a laptop carried around campus every day.
  • USB-C hub: May be useful for projectors, USB drives, SD cards, wired networking, or external displays. Check the ports your school actually uses.
  • External drive: Helpful for storing large projects, but an external drive alone is not a backup. Keep another copy elsewhere.
  • AirPods: Convenient for commuting, calls, and lectures, but optional. Cheaper wired or non-Apple headphones may be the better financial choice.
  • AirTag: Useful for tracking a backpack or luggage, but it does not replace device security, Find My protections, or insurance.

Before buying third-party accessories, check compatibility, safety certification, warranty coverage, charging standards, and return policies.

Products most students can skip

  • iPhone upgrade: Replace your phone only if it is failing, unsupported, damaged, or inadequate for your needs.
  • Apple Watch: Useful for notifications, timers, fitness, and some safety features, but not a school essential.
  • Premium AirPods: An audio convenience, not core academic equipment.
  • Apple Vision Pro: Apple lists it from $3,699 with education pricing, making it an impractical recommendation for ordinary coursework.
  • Mac Studio: Consider it only for unusually demanding fixed-desk creative or technical work. It also requires a monitor, keyboard, mouse, webcam, and other peripherals.

A Mac mini can be sensible for a student who works mainly at a permanent desk and already owns the required accessories. An iMac offers a convenient all-in-one setup but is less useful for students who regularly move between campus and home.

Check these things before you buy

  1. Ask your department for software requirements. Confirm macOS compatibility, Windows-only applications, virtualization needs, locked-down exam browsers, proctoring tools, and remote-lab options.
  2. Check your school’s IT policy. Some institutions standardize on Windows, Chromebooks, Android, or managed hardware.
  3. Choose the role first. Decide whether the device is your primary computer, a tablet companion, or a fixed workstation.
  4. Calculate the total setup price. Include memory, storage, keyboard, Pencil, case, hub, backup storage, warranty, and taxes.
  5. Do not automatically choose the smallest storage option. Photos, video, datasets, games, and creative projects can fill a drive quickly. Cloud storage is useful but is not a complete backup.
  6. Match memory to the workload. Development environments, virtual machines, large creative projects, and many simultaneous applications benefit from more memory. There is no universal memory minimum for every student.
  7. Compare support and repair coverage. Apple says eligible students and educators can save up to 10% on qualifying AppleCare coverage. Review the current terms and your existing insurance before paying for protection.

Apple Education versus retailers and refurbished devices

Apple Education is not automatically the cheapest route. Compare the exact generation, chip, memory, storage, warranty, return window, and final tax-inclusive price with major retailers and Apple Certified Refurbished options.

Keep the promotion’s value separate from the checkout price. A MacBook Air at $1,199 with a $100 Apple Gift Card is still a $1,199 purchase transaction under the promotion’s terms, and the card is useful only if you expect to spend it on Apple products or services. A retailer discount or refurbished device may be better if you do not need another Apple purchase.

Apple’s U.S. prices changed during 2026, so older buying guides may show outdated comparisons. Check the current Apple listing and retailer checkout price on the day you buy.

The final decision tree

  • Need one computer for school and want the safest general choice? Buy the 13-inch MacBook Air with M5.
  • Need the cheapest new Mac and do ordinary coursework? Buy the MacBook Neo.
  • Need sustained professional creative or technical performance? Buy a MacBook Pro, choosing the configuration your software requires.
  • Already own a laptop and take handwritten notes or draw? Buy an iPad Air with a compatible Apple Pencil.
  • Need only reading, light notes, and basic apps? Consider the standard iPad.
  • Unsure what your major’s software requires? Wait for departmental or campus IT guidance before committing to Apple.
  • Need Windows-only software or a lower total price? Compare Windows, Chromebook, Android-tablet, and refurbished options instead of assuming Apple is the right platform.
