What Huawei reported for 2023
Huawei released its 2023 annual report on March 29, 2024. It reported CNY704.2 billion in revenue, compared with approximately CNY642.3 billion in 2022—an increase of about CNY61.9 billion, or 9.6%. The company also reported CNY87 billion in net profit and CNY164.7 billion in research-and-development spending, equal to 23.4% of revenue. Is $100 billion an accurate description?
Huawei reports its results in Chinese yuan, not U.S. dollars. Converting CNY704.2 billion at commonly cited 2023 rates produces an estimate in the high-$90 billions; the precise equivalent depends on whether the calculation uses an annual-average rate, a year-end rate, or another date. Reuters coverage and the Associated Press described the figure as roughly $100 billion, but CNY704.2 billion remains the most precise way to state the result. Which businesses grew fastest?
Huawei’s Chinese-language results announcement reported the following business figures. These categories should not be added together as though they were separate, mutually exclusive pieces of consolidated revenue: their total exceeds the company-wide figure. Use CNY704.2 billion for Huawei’s consolidated revenue.

All business-line values and growth rates are from Huawei’s 2023 results announcement in Chinese. The figures show why growth-rate headlines need context: automotive solutions grew much faster by percentage than the larger businesses, yet their reported revenue was small relative to Huawei’s total.
Consumer devices and the Mate 60
The consumer business grew 17.3% to CNY251.5 billion. Huawei’s Mate 60 series, launched in 2023, became a prominent symbol of its return to China’s premium smartphone market. External coverage linked the series’ reception to a 5G-capable handset and domestic semiconductor capability. However, Huawei’s disclosed consumer figure includes more than smartphones, so it does not establish how much of the increase came from the Mate 60 or handsets overall. Infrastructure, cloud, energy, and automotive
ICT infrastructure revenue reached CNY362 billion, up 2.3%, suggesting resilience in Huawei’s telecommunications and enterprise-infrastructure base without making it the main growth engine. Cloud rose 21.9% to CNY55.3 billion, while digital power increased 3.5% to CNY52.6 billion. Automotive solutions posted the largest percentage rise, 128.1%, but generated CNY4.7 billion; rapid growth from that smaller base did not make it a major contributor to consolidated revenue.

What the recovery says about U.S. restrictions
U.S. restrictions limited Huawei’s access to advanced semiconductors, chipmaking tools, and other technology inputs, affecting its ability to compete in smartphones and parts of its international business. The Mate 60 launch and the consumer rebound showed resilience and some domestic substitution. They did not establish that Huawei had unrestricted access to the most advanced chips, fabrication equipment, software, or global supply chains. Reporting on the handset’s processor and production provides outside context, but Huawei’s financial disclosures do not establish the full supply-chain sourcing, production economics, or scale.

Huawei’s R&D spending—CNY164.7 billion, or 23.4% of revenue—shows the scale of its investment in technology development. It is evidence of strategic effort, not proof that the company has independently replaced every restricted input. The company also expanded activity in cloud, digital power, and automotive solutions, broadening its sources of business beyond smartphones and telecom equipment.

Huawei reported CNY87 billion in net profit alongside revenue growth. That indicates the recovery extended beyond sales, but revenue and net profit alone do not reveal cash generation, segment margins, or the exact contribution of each business to earnings. Huawei is privately held and its public reporting does not provide the same continuous disclosure as a listed company; readers should treat these as company-reported figures and consult the annual report for its financial statements.

What the result does—and does not—prove
- It does show a recovery: revenue rose 9.6% year over year after a difficult period, with consumer and cloud growth standing out.
- It does not show a complete return to normal: one year of higher revenue does not establish that Huawei regained its former global smartphone position or is operating without technology constraints.
- It does not prove sanctions were defeated: product-level resilience and domestic substitution are narrower claims than full independence from restricted technologies.
- It does not make $100 billion an exact accounting figure: the reported amount is CNY704.2 billion, and any dollar equivalent depends on the exchange-rate method.
