U.S. military action in the Middle East can raise oil and gasoline prices when it makes traders expect less available petroleum, riskier shipping, damaged production, or tighter supplies of refined fuel. Prices can move before a single barrel is lost because oil markets price future risk. A physical disruption can push benchmarks higher, while a ceasefire, restored tanker traffic, alternative pipelines, inventory releases, or weaker demand can reverse the move.
The effect on an American driver is not automatic or uniform. Global crude benchmarks, refinery margins, regional fuel supplies, taxes, seasonal specifications and local competition all stand between a military event and the price on a particular station sign.

Why military action can move oil prices before supply is lost
Oil is traded in an interconnected international market. When an attack, retaliation, sanctions response or escalation occurs, traders reassess several risks at once:
Recommended Free Tools
- Production facilities could be damaged or operators could shut wells as a precaution.
- Export restrictions could remove barrels from the market.
- Tankers could face attacks, delays, higher insurance premiums or higher freight costs.
- A strategic shipping route could become difficult or impossible to use.
- Refineries or fuel terminals could be damaged, reducing gasoline, diesel or jet-fuel availability even if crude production continues.
A threat can therefore affect prices without an immediate physical shortage. Conversely, a dramatic military event may have little lasting price effect if shipments continue, spare capacity is available and traders conclude that the conflict will remain contained. Expectations about duration and the speed of restoration are central to the market response.

How the effect reaches U.S. fuel prices
- Risk is repriced. Futures traders, refiners, shipping companies and fuel wholesalers estimate the probability and cost of future disruptions. A higher perceived risk can lift crude futures and physical cargo prices.
- Global benchmarks change. An interruption in one region can raise internationally traded benchmark prices, even for buyers that do not receive oil from the conflict zone. The United States participates in those global crude and product markets.
- Refiners adjust costs and operations. Refineries may pay more for crude, compete for alternative grades, or face higher shipping and insurance costs. If gasoline or diesel supplies are tight, refinery margins can rise independently of crude prices.
- Wholesale product prices move. Gasoline and diesel are traded products with their own inventories, import and export flows, quality specifications and demand patterns.
- Retail prices catch up at different speeds. Stations generally respond to wholesale replacement costs, but local competition, taxes, delivery schedules and pricing cycles determine when and how much appears on the sign.
Why the Strait of Hormuz matters
The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with global shipping routes. The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimated that 20.9 million barrels per day crossed the strait in the first half of 2025. That represented about 20% of global petroleum-liquids consumption and roughly one-quarter of maritime oil trade.
Those figures describe total flows, not the amount destined for the United States. EIA estimated that about 0.4 million barrels per day of crude and condensate from Persian Gulf countries transited Hormuz to the United States during that period. That was approximately 7% of U.S. crude-oil and condensate imports and about 2% of U.S. petroleum-liquids consumption.
The direct-flow percentage should not be treated as a ceiling on the possible U.S. price effect. A disruption can raise the global benchmark used by U.S. refiners and alter internationally traded gasoline and diesel prices, even when most U.S. petroleum does not physically pass through Hormuz.

EIA estimated that Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline and the United Arab Emirates’ Abu Dhabi pipeline together could provide about 4.7 million barrels per day of capacity to bypass Hormuz. That is substantial, but it is not a full replacement for normal strait flows. Available capacity may differ from theoretical capacity because of maintenance, crude type, terminal constraints, operating decisions and the time needed to redirect cargoes.

Crude oil is only one part of a gasoline bill
EIA identifies four broad components of the U.S. retail gasoline price: crude oil, refining, distribution and marketing, and taxes. A military-driven crude increase can therefore be amplified, muted or temporarily offset by other components.
Crude oil
Crude is usually the largest component of gasoline’s cost. A sustained increase in benchmark crude raises refiners’ replacement cost, but the relationship is not one-for-one. The grade of crude, refinery configuration and regional benchmark all matter.
Refining margins and product availability
Refineries turn crude into gasoline, diesel and other products. Outages, maintenance, limited inventories or competition for imported fuel can make finished products expensive even if crude prices are stable. In its September 2026 analysis, EIA said tight global gasoline supplies had raised refinery margins and reported that the New York Harbor gasoline crack spread averaged about $1 per gallon higher than in 2025 since May. A crack spread is a wholesale refinery-margin indicator, not a promise that retail gasoline rose by exactly $1 per gallon.

Pipeline capacity, terminal access, trucking costs, station operating costs and local competition affect the final price. Federal, state and local fuel taxes differ, and some regions require seasonal gasoline formulations. These factors explain why two cities can post different prices after the same international oil move.

Why pump prices do not move everywhere at the same time
Spot and futures markets can react within minutes, while physical cargoes, refinery purchases and station deliveries adjust over days or weeks. EIA’s pump-price methodology notes that retail prices can lag spot-price movements; during a price cycle, the measured refining or distribution components may appear to change because the retail price and its underlying inputs are moving at different speeds.
Local conditions also matter. A region supplied by a constrained pipeline, a refinery undergoing maintenance or a terminal with limited inventories can see a sharper move than a region with multiple supply sources. Fuel specifications, taxes, seasonal demand and station-level pricing decisions prevent a single nationwide dollar-per-gallon result.
Three conflict scenarios and their likely price pathways
| Scenario | Physical supply loss | Transport and expectations | Potential offsets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limited strike with no lasting infrastructure damage | None or short-lived shutdowns | Risk premium may lift futures; prices can retreat if shipping continues and escalation stops | Existing inventories, alternative suppliers and unchanged tanker flows |
| Prolonged regional conflict | Repeated production shut-ins, damaged facilities or export restrictions | Higher insurance and freight costs; uncertain restoration keeps prices volatile | Bypass pipelines, other producers’ spare capacity, inventories and demand reduction, although these may be insufficient |
| Sustained shipping or chokepoint disruption | Oil may remain underground but fail to reach buyers on schedule | Rerouting, tanker scarcity and a persistent risk premium can affect crude and products worldwide | Alternative routes and pipelines, stock releases and reduced consumption; capacity and timing are limited |
This framework separates an actual barrel shortage from a transport problem and from a market risk premium. The same military action can produce different outcomes depending on which channel dominates.

What recent episodes show
June 2025 attacks and subsequent U.S. strike
The Congressional Research Service reported that oil prices jumped approximately $5 per barrel after the initial June 2025 Israeli attacks and subsequent U.S. strike. Prices later returned to pre-attack levels or lower after the conflict ended. CRS cautioned that tensions, tariffs and other market uncertainties were also affecting prices, so the episode does not isolate the strike’s effect. It does demonstrate that a sharp initial move does not necessarily become a lasting shortage.

Second quarter of 2026
EIA reported that front-month Brent futures ranged from $72 per barrel on June 26 to $118 per barrel on April 29 during the second quarter of 2026. The agency linked movements to disrupted flows, production shut-ins, uncertainty about reopening Hormuz, ceasefires, anticipated tanker traffic and renewed strikes. The average daily Brent-price swing was about $4 per barrel in April and May 2026, compared with about $1 per barrel in the same months of 2025.
These numbers describe a volatile period, not a rule that every military action produces a $46 range or a $4 daily move. They show how quickly expectations about closures, reopening and restoration can change benchmark prices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How long can a military-related price increase last?
Duration depends on the physical loss and on how quickly traders believe normal flows will return. A brief risk premium can fade when tankers continue sailing, an agreement reduces escalation risk or inventories cover temporary shortfalls. A longer disruption can persist while operators repair facilities, reroute cargoes, secure insurance or determine whether a chokepoint is safe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOn April 7, 2026, EIA Administrator Tristan Abbey described the agency’s forecast assumptions during a Hormuz closure: Our petroleum forecasts are highly contingent on the interaction of three variables. First, to even run our model we have to make an assumption about the duration of the Strait of Hormuz closure. Second, we know that the closure is forcing production to shut in, but we can only estimate these outages. Third, just as we had never before seen the strait close, we’ve never seen it reopen. What exactly that looks like remains to be seen. Full restoration of flows will take months. Our modeling indicates that fuel prices will continue to rise until these variables resolve.

That was a dated forecast statement tied to specific assumptions, not a timeless prediction. The key lesson is that closure length, shut-in production and the process of reopening determine the path.
What households should watch when fuel costs rise
- Crude benchmarks: Brent and other international markers indicate whether the market is repricing global supply risk.
- Gasoline and diesel inventories: Tight product stocks can make pump prices rise even when crude is stable.
- Refinery margins: A widening gasoline crack spread signals pressure in the refined-product market, not an equal retail increase.
- Shipping and route news: Tanker traffic, insurance costs, bypass pipelines and reopening expectations affect how durable a move may be.
- Local conditions: Taxes, seasonal formulations, refinery outages and station competition determine how national developments show up locally.
For a personal budget, treat a conflict-related jump as uncertain rather than permanent. Review fuel spending against several weeks of actual local prices, keep a cash buffer for volatility and avoid assuming that a headline crude move will translate immediately into the same change at every station.
Common misconceptions
“Any U.S. strike automatically makes gasoline more expensive.”
No. Prices respond to the action’s effect on expected or actual production, transportation and refined-product supplies. A contained event can produce a brief premium, while a larger disruption can have a sustained effect.
“Only oil imported directly through Hormuz matters to Americans.”
No. Direct U.S.-bound flows are only one exposure. Global crude benchmarks and internationally traded gasoline and diesel connect U.S. refiners and consumers to disruptions elsewhere.
“A $5-per-barrel crude move means gasoline rises by a fixed amount everywhere.”
No. Refining margins, product inventories, taxes, transportation, seasonal specifications and retail competition can magnify or mute the change and alter its timing.
The practical takeaway
U.S. military action affects oil and fuel costs through expectations, physical supply and transportation risk. The largest and most durable increases occur when production is shut in, a major shipping route is constrained or refined-fuel supplies become tight for an extended period. Alternative pipelines, other producers, inventories and weaker demand can reduce the impact, but their capacity and speed are limited.
For U.S. drivers, the most useful distinction is between a global benchmark reaction and the local pump price. Watch how the event changes actual flows and restoration expectations, then account for refinery margins, inventories, taxes and regional supply before drawing conclusions about your own fuel bill.
