The reliable way to determine what happened to an XRP Ledger payment is to look up its transaction hash and confirm the result in a validated ledger. A wallet’s “submitted,” “pending,” timeout, or even provisional success message is not final. In a validated ledger, tesSUCCESS means the requested transaction succeeded; a validated tec... code means it was included but the requested action failed; a ter... result is still provisional. Do not send a replacement payment until you know which of those conditions applies.
Start with the transaction hash, not the wallet message
Find the transaction hash in the sending wallet’s activity, transaction details, or history. The hash is the identifier used to check the ledger directly. If the wallet timed out without showing a hash, first determine whether it actually submitted the signed transaction; do not assume that a timeout means no transaction was broadcast.

- Copy the exact hash. Avoid copying an address, memo, or internal wallet reference by mistake.
- Check the intended network. Make sure the wallet and the lookup service are using the same XRP Ledger network. A transaction on one network will not appear on another.
- Look up the hash against a validated ledger. Confirm that the response includes
validated: true. Data from an open, current, or candidate ledger can change before consensus. - Read the exact result code and metadata. Do not rely on a color, icon, or simplified “failed” label in the wallet.
- Check
LastLedgerSequenceif the transaction is missing. This field determines when the transaction can no longer be included. - Only then decide whether to retry. A delayed transaction can still be applied, and two transactions that use the same account sequence can conflict.
XRPL’s finality guidance states that certainty requires both conditions: inclusion in a validated ledger and result code tesSUCCESS. A wallet’s immediate response is an observation of submission or a provisional ledger state, not proof of final settlement.

Read the result class correctly
XRPL result codes are grouped by their first three characters. The group tells you whether the transaction was applied, rejected before ledger inclusion, or is still being processed. The full code and transaction metadata determine the remedy.

Provisional results can change when transactions are reapplied or consensus order changes. A nonvalidated tesSUCCESS is therefore not equivalent to a settled payment.
tesSUCCESS: verify what actually arrived
When a validated lookup returns tesSUCCESS, inspect the transaction and metadata rather than assuming the wallet display is complete. Confirm the destination account, delivered amount, currency, and any destination tag or other payment data required by the recipient. The payment is settled on the ledger even if the wallet interface has not refreshed.
tec...: a ledger-applied failure
A validated tec result is not merely a rejected network request. The transaction reached a validated ledger, the requested action failed, and the transaction cost was consumed. The account sequence also advances. Some codes can produce additional bookkeeping effects, so read the metadata and exact code before retrying.

terQUEUED indicates that the transaction was queued for a future ledger. terSUBMITTED indicates submission without application yet. Neither is a final success or final failure. Continue monitoring the same hash and check whether LastLedgerSequence has been reached.
tef and tem results
A tef code requires more care because the exact code determines whether the transaction can ever be applied. tefMAX_LEDGER, for example, is associated with a transaction whose ledger limit has passed. A tem code generally points to malformed construction, such as an invalid field combination, amount, or transaction type. Correct the input rather than repeatedly rebroadcasting the same object.

Use LastLedgerSequence to determine whether a missing transaction is over
A transaction can disappear from a wallet’s pending list while still being eligible for inclusion. The decisive test is the transaction’s LastLedgerSequence compared with the latest validated ledger.
- Read the transaction’s
LastLedgerSequence, if present. - Check the latest validated ledger index from a server with continuous ledger history.
- If the latest validated index is lower than that limit, the transaction may still be included. Keep monitoring the original hash.
- If the limit ledger has been validated, search that ledger and every earlier validated ledger for the transaction.
- If it is absent from all of them, the transaction has expired and cannot later be applied.
This is stronger evidence than a wallet’s “failed” banner. An expired transaction is final only after the relevant ledger has been validated and the transaction is confirmed absent from the complete history through that point.

Why XRP Ledger transactions fail
Missing or incorrect destination tag
A recipient such as an exchange or hosted service may require a destination tag to route a payment to the correct customer account. A validated tecDST_TAG_NEEDED means the payment omitted a required tag. Obtain the recipient’s current instructions, verify the account and tag together, and prepare a new payment only after confirming that the original transaction failed. Do not guess a tag from an old deposit.
Reserve and unfunded conditions
The XRP balance shown by a wallet is not necessarily the amount that can be spent. XRPL accounts must maintain a protocol-defined reserve, and creating ledger objects can require additional XRP. Reserve parameters can change, so use the current official reserve information rather than hardcoding an amount in a calculation.
Codes such as tecINSUFFICIENT_RESERVE and tecUNFUNDED indicate that the account could not satisfy the required balance or funding condition. Check the spendable balance after reserve, any objects being created, and the transaction fee. Reducing the payment amount may fix a reserve problem; it does not fix a missing destination tag or a malformed transaction.
Insufficient fee
XRPL distinguishes a transaction that cannot be relayed because its fee is too low from one that was already distributed but cannot be paid from the sender’s balance. A pre-relay condition can return terINSUF_FEE_B. If the transaction has been distributed and the balance is insufficient, it can be included with tecINSUFF_FEE. In the latter case, the transaction cost is consumed and the sequence advances.

Do not increase the fee blindly. First check the fee field, current network conditions, the account’s spendable balance, and whether another transaction has already consumed the relevant sequence.
Sequence-number conflict
Each account transaction uses a sequence number. Two signed transactions using the same sequence can conflict: one may be applied while the other becomes unusable, or a delayed transaction may arrive after you have created what you thought was a replacement. Before signing a replacement, inspect the account’s current sequence and the status of every outstanding transaction from that account.
Malformed fields and invalid construction
Incorrect addresses, an invalid transaction type, missing required fields, incompatible amount formats, or a bad combination of flags can produce a tem result or another construction-related failure. Recheck the source and destination accounts character by character, the amount and currency representation, destination tag requirements, and all fields generated by the wallet or signing software. Rebuilding from a known-good template is safer than editing a partially signed payload.
Path or liquidity failure
Payments that use an exchange path can fail with codes such as tecPATH_DRY or tecPATH_PARTIAL. These indicate that the requested path could not deliver the intended amount under the transaction’s conditions. Review the send amount, destination amount, slippage-related limits, trust lines, and available liquidity. A direct XRP payment and a token or issued-currency payment have different requirements; do not treat a path failure as a generic network outage.

The transaction cost is deducted when a transaction is included in a validated ledger, whether the result is tesSUCCESS or a validated tec failure. A transaction that was never applied does not incur that ledger-level cost, although a wallet or service can show its own processing status.

- Total balance: XRP recorded by the account.
- Reserve: XRP that must remain locked by protocol requirements.
- Object-related requirement: additional reserve implications when ledger objects are created.
- Transaction fee: XRP consumed when an included transaction is validated.
- Spendable amount: what remains after reserve and the fee needed for the new transaction.
Before retrying, calculate whether the payment plus fee leaves the required reserve. A wallet may display a large headline balance while correctly refusing a payment that would breach the reserve.
What to do when the wallet says “pending”
“Pending” is a user-interface state, not an XRPL result class. Map it to the ledger data:
- If the hash is found with
validated: trueandtesSUCCESS, the payment is complete; refresh the recipient service or provide the validated hash to its support team. - If the hash is found with a validated
tec, the requested action failed and you must fix the stated cause before retrying. - If the hash returns
terQUEUEDorterSUBMITTED, continue monitoring and wait for validation or expiration. - If no result is available, determine whether the signed transaction was actually submitted, confirm the network, and use a server with continuous ledger history.
- If
LastLedgerSequencehas passed and the transaction is absent from that ledger and all earlier validated ledgers, it is permanently expired.
The XRPL Send XRP tutorial describes a typical final-outcome window of about 4–7 seconds for acceptance into the next ledger version, while warning that network load or poor connectivity can make confirmation take longer. Treat that as operational guidance, not a guarantee or a network-wide success statistic.

First establish whether anything was submitted
A timeout can occur before signing, during submission, or after the server accepted the transaction but before the wallet received a response. Look for a hash in the wallet’s history, signing confirmation, or activity log. If there is no hash, do not create a second payment until you know whether the first signed transaction left the wallet.
Check network selection and ledger history
Confirm that the wallet is connected to the intended XRPL network and that the lookup endpoint is reading that same network. Then check a server that can provide continuous validated history. A server that lacks older ledgers may be unable to prove that an expired transaction is absent.

Do not infer failure from a temporary absence
Before the transaction’s ledger limit passes, absence can mean propagation delay, queueing, or an incomplete submission. Continue checking the hash and expiration boundary. After expiration, absence from the complete validated history is the evidence that the transaction cannot land later.
Safe replacement and retry procedure
- Resolve the original status. Obtain the hash and validated result, or prove expiration through
LastLedgerSequence. - Record the reason. Save the exact result code, ledger index, fee, sequence, destination, amount, and relevant metadata.
- Correct the underlying issue. Add a required destination tag, reduce the amount to preserve reserve, fix malformed fields, or revise a path and liquidity condition.
- Recheck the account sequence. Make sure no other transaction with that sequence is still pending or has already succeeded.
- Recalculate spendable XRP and fee. Account for reserve and any object-related requirement.
- Review the destination instructions again. Hosted recipients can change tag and deposit requirements.
- Sign and submit only the corrected transaction. Keep its new hash.
- Verify validated inclusion. Treat the retry as complete only when its lookup shows
validated: trueandtesSUCCESS.
Never replace a transaction merely because the app stopped animating. A delayed original can still be applied, and a same-sequence replacement can create a conflict rather than a clean cancellation.

Information to collect before contacting wallet or recipient support
- Transaction hash, if one exists.
- Source and destination addresses, with destination tag or memo requirements.
- Exact result code and whether
validatedis true. - Validated ledger index and
LastLedgerSequence. - Transaction fee, sequence number, amount, currency, and payment flags.
- Relevant transaction metadata, including delivered amount and affected ledger objects.
- Wallet network selection and the approximate submission time.
- Whether the wallet signed locally, broadcast the transaction, or only displayed a submission error.
Providing these fields lets support distinguish a settled payment, a ledger-applied failure, an unexpired pending transaction, an expired transaction, and a wallet-side submission problem without asking you to send funds again.
Bottom line for failed and pending XRP Ledger payments
Use the validated ledger as the source of truth. A validated tesSUCCESS is final success; a validated tec is a failed application that still consumes the transaction cost and advances sequence; a ter is provisional; and a missing transaction is final only after its LastLedgerSequence has passed and complete validated history confirms its absence. Once that classification is clear, the exact code, metadata, reserve, fee, sequence, fields, and network selection tell you whether to wait, correct, or safely retry.
