How to Safely Move Cryptocurrency to a New Hardware Wallet

To move cryptocurrency into a new hardware wallet, initialize that device as a new wallet, write down its newly generated recovery words offline, and send assets from the old wallet to newly verified receiving addresses. Restoring the old recovery phrase on the new device is a different operation: it recovers the same wallet and does not rotate your keys.

Use a small test transaction before moving a large balance. Confirm the asset, network, destination account, full address, amount and fee on the hardware wallet’s own screen, then wait for blockchain confirmation. Only retire or reset the old wallet after every intended asset and account has been checked.

First decide: restore the old wallet or migrate to fresh keys

The safest procedure depends on what “new wallet” means in your situation. There are two fundamentally different outcomes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Choice What happens to your keys On-chain transfers required? When it fits
Restore the existing wallet The old recovery phrase is entered into another compatible device. The same private keys, addresses and balances reappear. No, because the assets remain at the same addresses. A device is lost, damaged or being replaced, while the recovery phrase is still trusted and private.
Create a fresh wallet and migrate The destination device generates new recovery words and new keys. Assets are sent to new addresses. Yes. Each supported asset or account must be transferred, and network fees apply. You want to stop using the old recovery phrase, suspect it was exposed, or deliberately rotate to new keys.

Restoring a phrase does not make that phrase new. If anyone may have copied the old words, restoration leaves the same security problem in place; create a fresh wallet and transfer the funds instead. Conversely, a migration is unnecessary work when the only problem is a broken device and the original phrase remains trustworthy.

Before choosing, ask four questions:

  • Is the old recovery phrase still confidential and safe to use?
  • Are you replacing a device, or intentionally changing the wallet’s keys?
  • Does the destination wallet support every asset, account type and network you hold?
  • Can you accommodate the operational work and network fees for on-chain transfers?

The official Trezor migration guide describes the fresh-wallet approach as setting up a new wallet on the device and transferring funds to it.

Prepare a controlled migration environment

Use an authentic, updated destination device

Obtain the hardware wallet through a channel the manufacturer identifies as genuine. Inspect packaging and device prompts, install the manufacturer’s current wallet software from its official site, and apply firmware updates only through that software. Do not initialize a device whose screen displays prewritten recovery words or asks you to enter words supplied by someone else.

Use a private room and a computer or phone you control. Avoid screen-sharing, cameras, cloud notes, password managers, email, messaging apps and printers while handling recovery words. Malware can alter a copied address, but it cannot read words that never leave your offline backup.

Decide what “done” means

Write a migration checklist before sending anything. It should identify every asset, account, network and position in the old wallet, plus the destination account where each will land. Include ordinary token balances, collectibles, staking positions, liquidity or lending positions, and any account that is not visible in the wallet’s default portfolio view. The wallet applications’ account labels are not proof of a blockchain transfer; record the actual network for each holding.

Check compatibility before creating addresses

Support is specific to the destination wallet and network. A device may support a particular coin but not every token standard, smart-contract feature, staking workflow or collectible marketplace. Confirm current support in the destination manufacturer’s documentation before sending. If an asset or account type is unsupported, determine whether it must be withdrawn, unstaked, claimed, or moved through a compatible application first. Never send an unsupported token merely because the destination interface lets you paste an address.

Initialize and back up the fresh wallet

  1. Start the device as a new wallet. Select the option that generates a new wallet, not the option to recover an existing wallet. Follow the device’s setup screens and security checks.
  2. Record every recovery word in order. Write the words on the supplied backup medium or another durable offline medium. Do not photograph, type, copy, print or store them online.
  3. Complete the device’s backup verification. The hardware wallet should ask you to confirm selected words or the sequence. This catches transcription errors before funds are sent.
  4. Store the backup privately and separately from the device. Anyone with the words can generally control the wallet. Do not disclose them to support staff, a website, a “recovery service,” or a person claiming to help.
  5. Set the device PIN and other available protections. A PIN protects the physical device; it does not replace the recovery backup. Keep the PIN private and avoid predictable numbers.

The device should generate the backup internally. For example, the manufacturer explains that a new wallet backup is generated offline on its device in its migration instructions. If any setup flow asks you to enter recovery words into a web page or message, stop.

Make a recovery plan before moving value

Check that the words are legible, in the correct order and stored where you can retrieve them after a device failure. A second secure offline copy can protect against fire or water, but every additional copy increases the number of places that must be protected. Do not test a backup by importing it into an online service; use the hardware wallet’s own verification process or the manufacturer’s documented recovery procedure.

Build the asset and account inventory

Use the old wallet and a block explorer, where appropriate, to create a line-by-line inventory. For each item, record:

  • Asset name and token contract, when relevant.
  • Blockchain network and address format.
  • Old account or sub-account holding it.
  • Destination account and network selected for the transfer.
  • Whether the asset is liquid, locked, staked, delegated, lent, pooled or represented by a collectible.
  • How much native network currency is available to pay transaction fees.

Take care with assets that do not move as one simple send. Staked funds may need an unbonding period; lending or liquidity positions may require withdrawals; collectibles may sit in a separate account; and smart-contract approvals or claims may be separate transactions. These actions can have their own fees and risks. The destination wallet is not “complete” merely because its main coin balance appears.

Guidance from Phantom on moving funds to a new wallet also stresses handling assets and positions separately and confirming that the old wallet is empty before resetting it. A single-device migration guide from BitBox likewise starts with an inventory of accounts, assets and networks.

Generate and verify the receiving address

  1. Open the destination wallet application with the new hardware wallet connected and unlocked.
  2. Select the exact asset and the exact network. Do not rely on a similarly named network in a drop-down list.
  3. Choose Receive and select the destination account that matches your inventory.
  4. Allow the hardware wallet to display the address on its own trusted screen.
  5. Compare the entire address shown on the device with the address shown in the application. Verify the beginning, middle and end, not just the first and last few characters.
  6. Only after the hardware-screen check, copy or scan the address into the old wallet’s send form.

A computer can be infected with clipboard-changing malware, so an address that looks correct in the application is not enough. The device screen is the authoritative check before you approve a transaction. The receiving network must match the sending network; sending a token through the wrong network can make recovery difficult or impossible.

For high-value transfers, repeat the address check immediately before signing. If the address changes unexpectedly, disconnect, investigate and do not approve. Never ask another person to “confirm” an address by sending you one over chat; obtain it from the destination wallet and verify it on the hardware device.

Send a small test transaction

For a substantial balance, first send a small amount that is large enough to produce a normal transaction but small enough that an error is tolerable. The test should use the same asset, network, destination account and general fee settings as the intended transfer.

  1. In the old wallet, choose the asset and network that match the verified destination address.
  2. Paste the address only after checking it on the destination device screen.
  3. Enter the test amount and inspect the fee, fee currency and total debit.
  4. Review the address, network and amount one more time, then authorize the transaction with the old wallet’s signing device or security controls.
  5. Record the transaction ID and wait for the network’s confirmation.
  6. Open the destination account and confirm that the test amount appears there, on the intended network.

A transaction that merely appears in a wallet interface is not necessarily final. Use the transaction ID in a reputable block explorer for that network if the wallet provides one, and follow the network’s confirmation guidance. Do not send the rest until the destination balance and account are correct.

Move the remaining balance deliberately

Recheck the five signing facts

Before each full transfer, verify:

  • Address: the complete destination address matches the hardware wallet’s screen.
  • Network: the sending and receiving networks are identical and supported by the destination.
  • Asset: you are sending the intended coin or token, not a similarly named asset.
  • Amount: the entered amount, decimal places and remaining balance are correct.
  • Fee: the fee and fee currency are acceptable, and enough native network currency remains to pay it.

Some networks require a native coin in the old account to pay a token transfer. If the old wallet has only the token, the transaction may fail until you add a small amount of the network’s native currency. Keep enough for the final fee rather than attempting to sweep the account to the last decimal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose one transfer or several

If the wallet and network support a single transfer of the intended amount, one transaction can reduce repeated fees and review steps. Splitting into several transfers can make reconciliation easier or avoid a wallet’s transaction-size limit, but it creates more opportunities for an address or network mistake and may incur additional fees. Use the option that fits the wallet’s documented limits and your ability to verify each transaction.

Sign only on the hardware wallet

Read the transaction details on the device display before approving. Reject any prompt that shows an unexpected address, amount, token contract or network. A desktop or mobile application prepares a transaction; the hardware wallet is where the private key should authorize it. Never type recovery words into the application to “unlock” a transfer.

Understand fees, timing and irreversibility

Network fees are set by the blockchain and current congestion, not by a universal hardware-wallet price. Exact fee amounts and confirmation times vary by asset, network, wallet software and date. Check the live estimate shown by the sending wallet and leave a native-token reserve for any follow-up transaction.

After broadcast, a transaction may remain pending while the network processes it. Do not resend simply because the first transaction is not immediately visible; first check its status and transaction ID. If it is confirmed on the wrong address or wrong network, a wallet company generally cannot reverse it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

As the Kraken Wallet FAQ states, “An onchain transaction cannot be canceled or reversed after it is submitted.” Treat the final review as the point of no return. If a transfer is pending, consult the destination and sending wallet’s official status guidance rather than guessing or paying an unknown person to recover funds.

Handle special holdings and account types

Tokens on smart-contract networks

Confirm the token contract and network, not just the ticker symbol. The same symbol can exist on multiple chains. A destination wallet may display one version while lacking support for another. If the token is not supported, leave it in the old wallet until you have a documented compatible route.

Staking, delegation and locked balances

Determine whether the position can be transferred directly. You may need to undelegate or unstake first, then wait through the network’s unbonding period. Keep the old wallet secure and funded for any required transaction until the position is liquid and visible in the destination account.

Collectibles and non-fungible assets

Use the correct collectible account and network. Verify the item’s identifier and destination address before signing. A token transfer may not move associated marketplace listings, offers or permissions; review those separately and cancel or recreate them only through the relevant official service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DeFi, lending and liquidity positions

These are positions in smart contracts, not ordinary wallet balances. Withdraw or close them according to the protocol’s rules, account for withdrawal fees and slippage, and verify that the resulting assets arrive in the intended destination account. Do not assume that importing the new hardware wallet into an interface recreates a position held by the old address.

Audit the migration before retiring the old wallet

  1. Compare the destination wallet against your original inventory, asset by asset and account by account.
  2. Check each transaction ID and confirm the destination network and address.
  3. Resolve pending, failed or unsupported items before changing anything on the old setup.
  4. Leave enough native currency in the old wallet to complete any required fee or unstaking transaction.
  5. When every intended holding and position is accounted for, confirm that the old wallet is empty or contains only an explicitly retained reserve.
  6. Only then remove the old wallet from applications, reset a device or dispose of it.

Do not destroy the old recovery backup until you are certain that every asset has moved and that no account, contract position or delayed withdrawal remains. If you keep the old wallet for records, label it clearly and store its backup as securely as the new one. If the old phrase was exposed, do not continue using it just to hold a residual balance; finish the migration and treat the phrase as compromised.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The destination address is rejected

Confirm that the selected asset and network match the address format, that the account is supported, and that you have not mixed a test network with a production network. Generate a fresh receive address from the destination wallet instead of editing an old one.

The token is missing after a confirmed transfer

Check the transaction ID on the correct network, then verify that the destination account is the one displayed on the hardware wallet. The wallet application may require you to add or enable the token manually. If the transaction used an unsupported network or contract, stop sending more and contact only the wallet or network’s official support channels; never disclose recovery words.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The transaction is pending or failed

Inspect its status using the transaction ID and the network’s official explorer or wallet guidance. A low fee, temporary congestion, insufficient native currency or a contract-specific error can delay or reject a transaction. Do not create a replacement until you understand whether the original is still pending, confirmed or failed.

The old wallet is not empty

Return to the inventory. Look for a second account, a different network, a token hidden by the interface, a collectible account, a staked position or a contract balance. Keep the old device and backup available until every item is resolved.

Someone asks for the recovery words

Refuse. Legitimate wallet support does not need your recovery phrase or private keys. Disconnect from the conversation, secure the device and consider the old wallet compromised if the words were disclosed.

Final migration checklist

  • Decided between restoring the old phrase and creating fresh keys.
  • Destination device initialized as a new wallet, if migrating.
  • Recovery words verified on the device and stored offline.
  • Every asset, account, network and special position inventoried.
  • Destination support confirmed for each item.
  • Receive address and network checked on the hardware wallet screen.
  • Small test transaction confirmed in the intended account.
  • Full transfers reviewed for address, network, asset, amount and fee.
  • Native network currency reserved for required fees.
  • Destination holdings reconciled with the inventory.
  • Old wallet kept intact until all delayed or special positions are complete.
