To connect a domain to an AI agent or hosted service, complete two separate jobs: register the name (or use one you already own), then publish the service’s verification and routing records at the DNS provider that operates the domain’s authoritative nameservers. Add the hostname in the agent’s dashboard, copy its exact TXT, CNAME, A, or provider-specific alias values, wait for the service to verify them, and test the resulting HTTPS address. The registrar, DNS operator, and hosting platform may all be different companies.
What you are actually setting up
A domain name has several independent pieces:
- Registrar: the company that registers the name and manages its renewal, contact details, delegation, and (where supported) DNSSEC settings.
- Authoritative DNS operator: the service whose nameservers answer for the domain’s DNS zone. This is where the live records are edited.
- Agent or hosting platform: the service that runs your AI agent, API, dashboard, or website and supplies the records needed to route a hostname to it.
- TLS/HTTPS service: usually provisioned by the hosting platform after it verifies control of the name and sees the required DNS configuration.
“Where a domain is registered and where its DNS is answered are separate things,” as the CustomDomain custom-domain guide explains. Your registrar account may display a DNS editor, but that editor controls the live zone only when the domain’s nameservers are delegated to that registrar’s DNS service.

Before you begin: decisions, access and records
Choose the hostname your users will visit
Decide whether the agent should live at a subdomain such as app.example.com, at the root domain example.com, or at several hostnames. A subdomain is generally the simplest option because it can use a conventional CNAME when the platform provides one. Keep your public website, email, and agent on separate hostnames unless the platform explicitly supports sharing the same name.

- Registrar access, including the ability to view or change nameservers.
- Access to the DNS operator’s zone editor.
- Administrator access to the AI-agent or hosting dashboard.
- A way to receive registrar or platform verification messages.
Inventory services that must keep working
Write down current website, email, verification, policy, and other DNS records before changing anything. A new record for an agent should not silently remove mail records, domain-verification TXT records, or security policies. If you plan to move nameservers, treat the change as a DNS migration rather than as a simple record edit.

Understand what is not established in advance
Registration prices, renewal terms, privacy features, and the exact screens shown by a registrar vary by provider and jurisdiction. Check the selected registrar’s current terms before paying. The domain can remain registered there while DNS is hosted elsewhere; registration does not require a transfer.
Step 1: register or select a domain
If you need a new name
- Search the registrar for an available name and suitable top-level domain (TLD).
- Review the registration period, renewal price, taxes, transfer rules, privacy options, and contact-verification requirements shown for your country and TLD.
- Complete registration with accurate registrant and administrative contact details.
- Save the account recovery method and the domain’s expiration and auto-renewal settings.
No universal registration price or renewal schedule applies to every TLD, so do not rely on a price quoted for a different extension or country. Once the registration is active, you can connect the name without moving it to the agent’s hosting provider.
If you already own a domain
Use a dedicated subdomain when the existing root domain serves a public site or business email. For example, the agent could use agent.example.com while the main site stays at example.com. This limits the chance that a routing change will disrupt unrelated services.
Step 2: find the authoritative DNS operator
DNS edits must be made at the operator named by the domain’s NS (nameserver) delegation. Do not assume it is the registrar.

- In the registrar account, locate the domain’s nameserver or delegation settings.
- Look up the domain’s NS records with a DNS lookup tool or a command such as
dig NS example.com(replace the example name with yours). - Record the nameserver hostnames returned by the lookup.
- Identify which DNS company operates those nameservers and sign in to that company’s zone editor.
If the nameservers point to a managed DNS service, changes made in the registrar’s separate, unused DNS screen will not control the live domain. The Microsoft domain-record guide likewise instructs users to update records at the DNS hosting provider that answers for the domain.
Step 3: add the domain in the AI-agent or hosting platform
Enter the exact hostname
Open the platform’s custom-domain, domains, or networking area and add the hostname you chose. A platform may accept app.example.com and example.com as separate entries; add only the one you intend to serve.
Complete ownership verification
The platform may display a TXT challenge, a CNAME used for verification, or another proof-of-control method. Copy the record name and value exactly, including whether the interface expects the full hostname or only the label relative to the zone. Verification proves that you control DNS; it does not necessarily route visitors to the agent.
Separate verification from routing
After ownership is proven, the dashboard may show additional routing records. Keep the verification record unless the platform explicitly says it can be removed. A verified domain can still return an error if its traffic is not pointed at the service.

Some ecosystems offer an automated Domain Connect flow. Microsoft documents automated Domain Connect where both sides support it, alongside a manual method for entering records. Domain Connect is described in the IETF draft protocol document; support is not universal, and the draft is not evidence that every registrar or DNS operator implements it.
Step 4: publish the requested DNS records
Subdomain connection with a CNAME
For a hostname such as app.example.com, create the CNAME record exactly as the service specifies:

A CNAME maps one hostname to another hostname. It cannot coexist with other data at the same name in the way an ordinary web record can, so resolve conflicts only as the service instructs. Do not delete unrelated records elsewhere in the zone.
Root or apex connection
The apex is the bare domain, such as example.com. A conventional CNAME cannot occupy it because the zone apex must also carry SOA and NS records. For an apex connection, use one of these options in the platform’s instructions:

- A provider-supported apex alias or flattening feature.
- The exact A record addresses supplied by the hosting service.
- A subdomain, with the apex redirecting or linking to it if that meets your product’s needs.
Alias features are provider-specific and are not interchangeable. Do not convert a supplied CNAME target into an invented A record.
TXT, A, and other records
TXT records are commonly used for ownership challenges, but the exact name and value belong to the service that issued them. A records point to IPv4 addresses when the platform supplies them. Some platforms request additional records for redirects, verification, or security. Add every required record, preserve unrelated records, and follow the platform’s current syntax rather than an old screenshot.
Step 5: verify DNS and bring the service live
- Save the records at the authoritative DNS operator.
- Use the DNS operator’s lookup tool or an independent lookup to confirm that the expected record is visible for the intended hostname.
- Return to the agent or hosting dashboard and run its verify, check, or refresh action.
- Watch the status until the platform reports that the domain is connected or live. One documented connection flow uses pending and propagating states and marks a domain live after the desired records resolve; its exact status names are vendor-specific.
- Open the hostname in a private browser window and test the application over
https://. - Test the agent’s key functions, callbacks, login flow, and any API endpoint that uses the new origin.
DNS visibility and certificate provisioning are separate events. Firebase’s custom-domain documentation describes certificate deployment after its verification and DNS steps. Other platforms may use different checks and schedules, so do not promise a universal propagation or TLS-issuance time.

Changing nameservers safely
A nameserver move changes who answers every DNS question for the domain. It is materially broader than adding one CNAME.

Build a complete record inventory
- Web records: apex A/AAAA or alias records,
www, redirects, and application subdomains. - Email records: MX, SPF-related TXT, DKIM selectors, and DMARC policy TXT.
- Verification records for analytics, payment, messaging, and other services.
- CAA, SRV, security-policy, and any vendor-specific records used by applications.
Export or copy the current zone where possible, then recreate the necessary records in the replacement provider before changing delegation. Record the old nameservers so you can compare responses during the transition.
Check DNSSEC and the DS record
DNSSEC can fail when the registrar still publishes a DS record for a domain while the replacement zone is unsigned. The managed-DNS documentation warns that validating resolvers may reject answers in that state. Confirm the new DNS provider’s DNSSEC support and migration procedure, and coordinate DS changes at the registrar with the provider’s signing state.
Switch and monitor
- Confirm the replacement zone contains the records that must remain available.
- Follow the DNS provider’s documented DNSSEC sequence.
- Change the nameservers at the registrar.
- Check NS responses and critical website and mail records from more than one network.
- After the new delegation is observed, complete the agent’s verification and routing steps in that authoritative zone.
Troubleshooting: symptoms and fixes

Operational and financial safeguards
Separate recurring obligations
Budget for the registrar’s recurring registration renewal separately from any DNS hosting, agent hosting, API usage, email, or certificate-related charges. The domain connection itself does not establish a universal price for any of those services. Keep renewal dates, auto-renewal settings, and payment methods documented so an expired domain does not take the agent offline.

- Use a subdomain for the agent when the root domain already carries important services.
- Give DNS editing access only to people who need it and enable the provider’s available account security controls.
- Keep a dated copy of the working records and the platform’s required values.
- Make one DNS change at a time and record what changed, where, and why.
Plan for replacement or shutdown
Document the agent hostname, DNS operator, registrar, verification method, routing target, and certificate status. If you later change platforms, remove or replace only the records tied to the old service after the new endpoint is verified. Keep the domain registered even if the agent is temporarily offline so you retain control of the name.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the registrar and DNS provider be different companies?
Yes. Registration stays with the registrar while the domain’s nameservers delegate DNS authority to another provider. Make record changes at the provider named by those NS records.
Do I need to move my domain to the AI platform?
Usually not. A platform can route a domain that remains registered with your existing registrar, provided you can publish the required records in the authoritative DNS zone.
What should I do if I no longer use the connected agent?
Remove or replace its verification and routing records only after confirming that no other service depends on them, then keep the registration and renewal controls under your account.
