Life insurance is worth considering when your death would leave another person with a financial shortfall. If nobody relies on your income or unpaid services and your assets already cover debts and final costs, you may have little or no need today. The practical way to handle objections is to quantify the exposure, match the policy to the years and costs that need protection, and read the contract’s future premiums and guarantees before committing.
Start with the decision, not the sales pitch
Life insurance is a contract that pays a death benefit to named beneficiaries when the policy is in force and its conditions are met. The right question is not “Does everyone need life insurance?” It is “What financial problem would my death create, for whom, and for how long?” The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) tells consumers to consider dependents, income, continuing obligations and alternatives such as savings or investments (NAIC life-insurance guidance).

- People who may need coverage: a spouse or partner who depends on your earnings, children who need care or education funding, relatives who rely on you, or anyone who would inherit your debts or housing costs.
- Non-income contributions matter: replacing childcare, eldercare, household work or a business role can require money even when the person who died had little salary.
- Needs can be temporary: a mortgage, school costs or a child’s dependence may end on a schedule. Other needs, such as final expenses or support for a lifelong dependent, may last indefinitely.
- Coverage may be limited or unnecessary: if no one depends financially on you and liquid assets or other arrangements cover the relevant obligations, buying a policy may not be a priority.
Write down who would be affected, the bills that would continue, the resources already available and the date each need should end. That list gives you a basis for responding to every common objection without accepting a policy that is too large, too short or unaffordable.

This is an individual assessment, not a rule that every adult should buy a set multiple of income. If the calculation shows no material gap, you can reasonably defer coverage and revisit the decision after a marriage, birth, home purchase, new debt or change in dependents. If it shows a gap, define its duration before looking at products.
“It costs too much.”
First separate an affordability problem from a coverage-design problem. A policy can seem expensive because it covers more years or a larger benefit than the actual need, or because it includes permanent features that are not required. Term insurance is generally less expensive than permanent insurance, especially in early durations, but a quote depends on age, health, location, benefit amount, term, insurer and underwriting. No current, comparable premium figure establishes what any particular applicant should pay.
Make an affordable comparison
- Choose the financial gap and the years it must cover before requesting quotes.
- Ask different insurers for the same benefit amount, term length, underwriting class and payment frequency.
- Request the complete premium schedule, not just the first payment. Ask whether premiums are level, can increase, or change at renewal.
- Test the highest premium you could face during the period and whether it still fits your budget after income or family changes.
- Ask what portion of the quote is guaranteed and what assumptions could change it.
Do not compare a low initial premium for one type of policy with a higher premium for a different duration or benefit and call the cheaper one a better deal. The NAIC’s buyer guidance recommends comparing similar policies and understanding future costs (Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide).

Begin with duration. Term insurance covers a specified period and pays only if death occurs during that term. It generally has no cash value and is usually less expensive than permanent coverage in the early years. Whole life and other cash-value policies are designed to remain in force for life if contractual requirements are met and include policy values, fees and additional guarantees or non-guarantees.

| Question | Term insurance | Permanent cash-value insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage period | A stated term; the benefit is payable for a covered death during that period. | Intended to last for life, subject to the contract and required premiums or policy values. |
| Early premium pattern | Generally lower than permanent coverage for a comparable initial benefit and period. | Usually higher because it includes lifetime coverage and policy-value features. |
| Cash value | Generally does not build cash value. | Builds a policy value under contract terms; fees, surrender charges and assumptions apply. |
| Future cost | May rise at renewal, depending on the contract; renewal age limits and prices must be checked. | Premiums and policy values depend on the specific design. Ask which amounts are guaranteed and which are not. |
| Useful fit | Income replacement, a mortgage, education years or another need with a definable end date. | A verified lifetime need or a deliberate need for policy-value features after understanding their costs and risks. |
Cash-value insurance is not automatically an investment winner. Ask for a guaranteed-values schedule and a separate illustration of nonguaranteed values, then identify the fees, surrender consequences and premium obligations. Universal life and variable life are permanent categories with different policy mechanics; the name alone does not tell you whether the policy will remain funded under every scenario. Buy lifetime coverage only when the lifetime need and the contract’s required funding are clear.
“I don’t want a medical exam or to share health details.”
Application requirements vary by insurer and policy. A simplified application may ask for less detailed health information, but the NAIC buyer guide warns that a policy requiring less health information will usually cost more and provide less coverage than one requiring fuller underwriting. “No exam” does not guarantee approval, a particular price or acceptance without health questions.
Protect yourself during underwriting
- Answer every health and lifestyle question accurately and completely.
- Ask what records, tests or interviews may be required and who pays for them.
- Read the application before signing; false or incomplete statements can lead to reduced or cancelled coverage under the contract.
- Do not cancel existing insurance while an application is pending.
Choose the least intrusive process that still provides the amount and duration your household needs, rather than paying more for less protection solely to avoid information requests.

- Verify authorization: contact your state insurance department to confirm the insurer is licensed where you live and to ask about complaint resources.
- Check financial strength: consult reputable independent rating companies and understand that a rating is an opinion, not a guarantee of a claim payment.
- Demand the contract: read the policy, declarations, riders, illustration and any delivery receipt. Mark every guarantee, exclusion, fee and deadline.
- Check payment instructions: make premium checks payable to the insurance company, not to an individual agent, as NAIC guidance advises.
- Compare like with like: use the same death benefit, term, payment schedule and underwriting assumptions when obtaining competing quotes.
Ask for time to review the documents. A refusal to provide the contract, a promise that nonguaranteed values are certain, or pressure to replace an existing policy is a reason to pause and contact your state regulator.
“Will life insurance provided at my workplace be enough?”
Employer coverage can be useful, but treat it as one resource in the loss-of-support calculation. Confirm the death benefit, eligibility, beneficiary rules, premium (including any employee-paid portion), exclusions, and what happens when employment ends. Ask whether the policy can be converted or ported, the deadline to do so, and the resulting price and age limits. Do not assume a workplace benefit follows you or remains affordable after a job change unless the plan documents say so.
Subtract only the amount that is actually payable to your beneficiaries under the plan. If a gap remains, compare an individual policy for that gap rather than automatically replacing the employer benefit.
“Will I get a better deal on the internet?”
An online application can make comparisons faster, but the channel does not determine the contract’s value. Compare the same policy terms online, through an agent or directly with an insurer, and verify who is licensed to sell in your state. Before submitting payment or personal information, obtain the insurer’s legal name, policy form information, underwriting requirements, premium schedule and delivery process.

Use the internet to collect documents and quotes, not to skip them. A lower displayed starting price may omit renewal increases, riders, fees or a different underwriting class. The NAIC’s process guidance recommends reviewing the policy and retaining copies of what you submitted (NAIC purchase-process tips).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.“I might not keep paying.”
Affordability must be tested over the policy’s likely life, not just at purchase. For term insurance, ask what happens if you stop paying, the grace period, the cost and age limit for renewal, and whether conversion to permanent coverage is available and until when. Renewal premiums can be substantially higher than initial premiums, so record the schedule before buying.
Permanent policies may have nonforfeiture options, such as a reduced paid-up benefit or cash surrender, depending on the contract. Exercising one can reduce or end coverage and may create fees or tax consequences; request a written illustration of each option. If a policy lapses, reinstatement may require missed premiums, interest and potentially new health evidence or an examination. The Insurance Information Institute advises contacting the insurer promptly about payment problems and following the policy’s specific rules (If I Can’t Pay My Premium, What Should I Do?).

Do not cancel an existing policy merely because a new application has been submitted. NAIC guidance says to keep the old policy until the replacement has been bought, received and reviewed; a change in health during underwriting can make the new policy more expensive or unavailable (NAIC consumer guide listing). Compare surrender charges, contestability provisions, exclusions, new underwriting and the full future premium before exchanging coverage.

What should I consider when deciding to buy a policy?
Use this decision sequence:
- Identify the beneficiary need: name each person or obligation that would face a shortfall.
- Set the amount: estimate debts, income replacement, services, education, housing and final expenses, then subtract dependable resources.
- Set the duration: choose the number of years until each major need ends, or document why a need is lifelong.
- Select the category: compare term with permanent coverage only after deciding whether lifetime protection or policy values are genuinely needed.
- Compare contracts: review premiums now and later, guarantees, renewal, conversion, underwriting, cash value, fees and surrender terms.
- Check the insurer: verify state authorization and independent financial-strength information.
- Review before signing: confirm beneficiaries, ownership, riders, exclusions, payment dates and the free-look or cancellation rights stated in your documents and state law.
What should I know about the process?
A typical purchase involves needs analysis, quote comparisons, an application, underwriting, policy delivery and a review period. The exact sequence and deadlines vary by insurer and state.
Before applying
- Gather income, debts, assets, existing policies, employer benefits and beneficiary information.
- Decide the target amount and term independently of a salesperson’s recommendation.
- Ask for sample guaranteed and nonguaranteed values, the full premium schedule and all policy charges.
During the application
- Complete health, occupation, travel and lifestyle answers accurately.
- Keep a copy of the application and any illustration.
- Ask when coverage begins and whether temporary coverage exists before delivery; never assume an application alone creates protection.
At delivery
- Confirm the issued benefit, term, premium, riders, exclusions, beneficiaries and ownership.
- Compare the issued policy with the application and illustration, and raise discrepancies immediately.
- Store the policy where beneficiaries can find it and tell them how to contact the insurer.
For U.S. consumers, rules and product availability differ by state and insurer. Use your state insurance department and the policy itself for controlling requirements rather than relying on a general online explanation.
Questions to ask before committing
- Is the premium level, adjustable or guaranteed, and what is the highest scheduled payment?
- What happens at the end of the term, at renewal and at the maximum renewal age?
- Can the policy be converted, until what age or date, and at what cost basis?
- Which death benefits, premiums and policy values are guaranteed?
- What fees, surrender charges, loans or withdrawals can reduce the benefit or value?
- What are the consequences of a missed payment, lapse or reinstatement?
- What health information, examination or records are required?
- Who owns the policy, who can change beneficiaries and how are changes recorded?
- Is the insurer authorized in my state, and where can I check its complaint and financial-strength information?
A practical response to any objection
When someone says life insurance is unnecessary, too expensive, confusing or intrusive, pause the sales conversation and return to four facts: who depends on the money or services, what shortfall would remain, how long it would last, and whether the proposed contract stays affordable and effective for that period. If the facts do not show a meaningful exposure, declining or postponing coverage can be a responsible decision. If they do, choose the smallest policy that closes the documented gap and that you can realistically keep in force, then verify every future cost and contractual condition before signing.
