They are different instruments with different trading venues, hours, liquidity, fees and currency effects. Your broker may offer one, both or neither route to residents of your country. Before placing an order, verify the instrument, eligibility, total charges, currency conversion method and order settings in the live ticket.
What “Nintendo stock” means in a European broker account
Nintendo’s common shares are listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market, according to the company’s 2025 annual report. A European investor must therefore distinguish the Tokyo-listed ordinary share from a depositary receipt that trades elsewhere. Search results in a broker can show several instruments with similar names; do not submit an order until the venue, currency and instrument description match what you intend to buy.

Tokyo ordinary shares
The ordinary share trades in Japanese yen (JPY) on the TSE. Buying it gives you the direct exchange-traded security, subject to the broker’s access, settlement and custody arrangements. Nintendo’s investor FAQ discusses its ticker and trading unit, but the identifier displayed by your broker is the one to verify because broker search labels and market-data descriptions can differ.

NTDOY American depositary receipt
NTDOY is a US over-the-counter ADR rather than the Tokyo ordinary share. Citi’s depositary information states that four NTDOY depositary receipts represent one Nintendo ordinary share. The ADR trades in US dollars and can have different liquidity, hours, commissions, depositary charges and corporate-action handling. Its availability is not guaranteed for every European resident or account type.

Check availability before funding an order
European brokers are not interchangeable. A broker might support Japanese equities but not this particular security, offer only an ADR, restrict OTC products, or require a separate market-data permission. Complete these checks before transferring money for a planned purchase.
- Confirm that your country of residence is eligible for the relevant market and security.
- Open the broker’s instrument page and identify the venue, currency, security type and trading-unit information.
- Check whether the account can hold JPY or USD, or whether the broker converts automatically.
- Read the current commission schedule for the legal entity serving your country and your account type.
- Look for exchange, clearing, custody, inactivity, dividend-processing and depositary charges in addition to commission.
- Confirm the order types, price increments, validity periods and market-data requirements shown in the live order ticket.
Do not infer that a broker’s published pricing for a Japanese subsidiary applies to every European legal entity. JPX states that securities companies set their own transaction charges, and published schedules for one broker or jurisdiction are examples rather than a universal European quote.
How to buy the Tokyo-listed ordinary share
- Select a broker with TSE access. In the product or market-permissions section, look specifically for Tokyo Stock Exchange equities, not merely “international stocks.” Record the legal entity, account currency and current fee schedule.
- Complete the required permissions and disclosures. The broker may ask about international trading, foreign-currency settlement, market-data access or OTC restrictions. Approval can differ between cash and margin accounts.
- Fund the account in a cost-effective currency. You may deposit euros or sterling and let the broker convert at execution, or convert to JPY in advance if the account supports a JPY balance. Compare the displayed rate and explicit conversion fee before choosing.
- Search for the Tokyo instrument. Open the full quote and verify that the market is the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the currency is JPY and the product is the ordinary share. Do not rely only on a company-name search result.
- Check the trading unit and price increment. TSE rules define trading units and tick-size arrangements. Your broker’s ticket should show the minimum quantity it accepts and the resulting estimated value.
- Enter quantity and order type. Choose a market or limit order only after reading the ticket’s validity, execution and routing language. See the order-type section below.
- Review the total estimate. Inspect the estimated share value, commission, exchange or local charges, conversion rate, conversion fee and any other line items. The amount shown at review can differ from the final amount if the exchange rate or market price moves.
- Submit and monitor. Save the order confirmation and check whether it is accepted, partially filled, expired or rejected. An accepted order is not necessarily executed.
- Verify the final position. After settlement, confirm quantity, average price, JPY cash movement, converted home-currency value and any separate fee entries in the account statement.
What fees will you pay?
There is no single “European Nintendo trading fee.” The all-in amount depends on your residence, broker entity, account type, order value, route and funding currency. Compare both routes using the same intended investment amount and the same date.

Use an all-in comparison worksheet
Enter the same intended order value for the Tokyo share and NTDOY. Record the quoted security price, quantity, commission, minimum, venue charges, conversion rate, conversion fee and recurring account costs. Then note whether the broker actually permits the route for your residence. A low headline commission can be outweighed by a minimum charge or an unfavorable FX spread on a small order.

Interactive Brokers’ published Japan pricing illustrates that securities commissions and currency conversion are separate dimensions, but it is not a quote for every European client, account type or legal entity. Obtain a current, account-specific preview rather than importing a fee from another jurisdiction.
No comparable, market-wide statistic establishes the typical all-in fee paid by European retail investors for Nintendo. A single broker’s price cannot be presented as the European average.
How currency conversion works
Buying the Tokyo share in JPY
The share price and settlement amount are in JPY. If your base currency is euros or sterling, your return in that home currency will reflect both the Nintendo share price and the JPY exchange rate. A gain in yen can translate into a smaller gain, or a loss, after yen weakens against your home currency.

Compare the quoted rate with a reference market rate, identify the spread or markup, and check whether the conversion is a separate transaction with its own minimum.

Buying NTDOY in USD
NTDOY is quoted and settled in USD. That removes the need to settle the trade directly in JPY, but it does not eliminate currency exposure for a euro- or sterling-based investor: your account value still moves with USD against your home currency. The ADR also has its own depositary arrangements and may not track the Tokyo quote tick-for-tick after accounting for the four-to-one ratio, market hours and costs.
Questions to answer in the currency screen
- Does the broker convert automatically, and at what point in the order lifecycle?
- Can you hold a JPY or USD cash balance?
- Is the quoted conversion rate firm, indicative or subject to a later adjustment?
- Is the spread disclosed separately from a stated conversion fee?
- Can an insufficient foreign-currency balance create a debit, forced conversion or rejected order?
- How are dividends converted, and can you choose the currency in which they remain?
Tokyo trading hours and order types
JPX documents two regular TSE sessions: 9:00–11:30 and 12:30–15:30 Japan time. Convert those times to your local European time for the relevant date, remembering that daylight-saving changes in Europe and Japan’s fixed time zone can alter the clock difference. These are exchange-session hours, not a promise that your broker accepts, routes or displays orders continuously throughout them.

Market orders
A market order instructs the broker to seek execution at available prices. The final price is not guaranteed, particularly in a thin order book, around an opening or after a trading interruption. Your broker may disable market orders for an instrument or use a specific market-order variant, so read the on-screen warning.

A limit order specifies the worst price at which you are willing to buy. It can remain unfilled if the market does not reach that price, and a partial fill is possible. Check whether the ticket offers day-only, session, good-till-cancelled or other durations; the labels and expiration rules are broker-specific.

What the ticket must confirm
- Venue and routing destination.
- Buy quantity and TSE trading-unit compliance.
- Price increment accepted for the security.
- Market, limit or other available order types.
- Order duration and expiration time.
- Whether the order can execute in both TSE sessions.
- Indicative commission, conversion rate and total cash requirement.
The available official exchange material supports the session and trading-rule description, but it does not establish one universal set of order types for every European broker. Treat the live ticket as controlling.

Neither route is automatically cheaper or more liquid for every European investor. Make a like-for-like, dated comparison using your own country, broker, order size and currency.
Common problems and how to resolve them
The instrument does not appear
Confirm that Japanese equities or OTC securities are enabled, then search by venue and security identifier rather than name alone. If it remains unavailable, ask the broker whether residence restrictions, product governance or market permissions apply. Do not substitute an unverified instrument with a similar label.
The order is rejected for quantity
Review the displayed TSE trading unit and price increment. Reduce or increase the quantity to an accepted unit, and check that the account has enough cash for both the trade and estimated charges.

The cash estimate is higher than expected
Open the cost breakdown. A minimum commission, local exchange charge or FX spread may be separate from the headline rate. If the broker converted automatically, compare the conversion line with the rate you expected and ask which rate applies at settlement.
The order is accepted but not filled
Check whether it is a limit order, whether the price is reachable, whether the market is in the TSE lunch break or closed, and whether the order expired. A queued order can remain unexecuted without being an error.
The ADR price looks inconsistent with Tokyo
Account for the four-ADR-to-one-ordinary ratio, the USD/JPY exchange rate, different market hours, OTC liquidity and fees. A quote comparison made at different times is not a reliable parity test.

Records, settlement and ongoing charges
Keep the trade confirmation, FX confirmation, final statement and fee schedule that applied on the order date. Record the venue, instrument, quantity, execution price, currency, conversion rate and all charges. These records help reconcile the position and provide information your local tax adviser may need. Tax treatment, reporting obligations and dividend withholding depend on your country and circumstances; obtain country-specific advice rather than assuming that the broker’s displayed amount is your final tax result.
Review later statements for custody, inactivity, dividend-processing or ADR depositary entries. A purchase that appeared inexpensive at execution can have different ongoing costs from the route you initially compared.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify whether you want the Tokyo ordinary share or are considering NTDOY as a separate ADR route.
- Verify residence eligibility and market permissions with your broker.
- Confirm venue, security type, currency and trading unit in the order ticket.
- Price commission, minimums, exchange charges, FX spread, conversion fee and ongoing account costs together.
- Decide whether automatic or manual currency conversion gives you clearer control at an acceptable cost.
- Choose an order type and duration that you understand, then check the broker’s routing and session rules.
- Review the total cash requirement before submission and reconcile the final statement after settlement.
