Use the Social Security Administration’s official benefit payment schedule for the exact date in any year. For your personal dollar amount, sign in to my Social Security or read your latest COLA or award notice; public averages cannot determine what you will receive.
Start with the official payment schedule
The date you receive a benefit depends on both the type of benefit and, for many Social Security beneficiaries, the birthday of the person whose earnings record pays the benefit. The SSA service page puts it plainly: “The date you get your benefits every month depends on your birthday and the type of benefits you get.” Because dates move around weekends, federal holidays and calendar years, use the SSA View benefit payment schedule rather than relying on a remembered pattern.

Look up an upcoming or past date
- Open the SSA payment-schedule page.
- Select the calendar for the year you need, such as 2026.
- Identify whether you receive Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or both.
- For a birthday-based Social Security payment, find the Wednesday associated with the applicable birth-date band. Check the calendar itself for the exact date after any holiday adjustment.
The published calendar is also useful when checking a payment that already should have arrived. It shows the scheduled date, while your bank or mail carrier determines when the funds or check are actually delivered. A calendar entry is therefore a payment schedule, not a guarantee that a deposit will appear at a particular hour.
Use your personal account for personalized information
A my Social Security account is the most direct online route to your own benefit information. After signing in, review the benefit details and notices available in your account. Those records are tied to your earnings and claim, not to a population average. If you have a COLA notice available online, it shows the new amount and the deductions used to calculate your payment.

The account can also provide an estimate based on your earnings record when you qualify for one. Treat an estimate as planning information, not as a final award. Your eventual amount can depend on future covered earnings, the type of benefit and when you claim.
Check by telephone
SSA’s automated telephone assistance is available at 1-800-772-1213. When prompted, you can say check delivery
to get payment-delivery information. Telephone information is useful when you cannot access an online account, but the year-specific calendar remains the reference for the scheduled date.
How the birthday-based Wednesday schedule works
For people who applied for or began receiving Social Security after April 30, 1997, the birthday of the person whose earnings record is being used generally determines the Wednesday on which the monthly Social Security payment is scheduled.
| Birthday of the person on the earnings record | Typical payment day |
|---|---|
| 1st through 10th | Second Wednesday of the month |
| 11th through 20th | Third Wednesday of the month |
| 21st through 31st | Fourth Wednesday of the month |
This is a scheduling rule, not a substitute for the official calendar. For example, the second Wednesday can fall on different dates from one month to the next, and a Wednesday that is a federal holiday is handled under SSA’s adjustment rules. Use the calendar to convert the Wednesday grouping into a date you can put in your budget.
Whose birthday counts?
The relevant birthday is generally the birthday of the person whose work record pays the benefit. That may be the worker, a spouse, a former spouse or a parent, depending on the benefit. If you are unsure which record SSA is using, your award information or a question to SSA can clarify it; do not assume that the beneficiary’s own birthday always controls.
This distinction matters in households where one person receives a retirement benefit and another receives a dependent or survivor benefit. The date is connected to the earnings record used for the payment, so two people in the same home can have different Social Security dates.
Cases that do not follow the three-Wednesday pattern
Several groups have a different regular date. Compare your situation with the following table before applying the birthday rule.

| Situation | General schedule | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Received or applied for Social Security on or before April 30, 1997 | Social Security is generally paid on the third day of the month. | Confirm the date on the current-year SSA calendar. |
| Receive both Social Security and SSI | Social Security is generally paid on the third day of the month. | SSI has its own first-of-month schedule; check both entries if you receive both programs. |
| Receive only SSI | SSI is generally paid on the first day of the month. | Check the calendar for weekend and federal-holiday movements. |
The pre-May 1997 rule is based on whether you received or applied for Social Security by April 30, 1997, not on your age today. A person who receives both programs should therefore look for the separate Social Security and SSI entries rather than expecting one combined Wednesday payment.
Do not infer your schedule from a neighbor’s date or from the date used by a spouse. Benefit type, the historical rule and the earnings record can each produce a different entry on the calendar.
Weekend and federal-holiday adjustments
When a scheduled payment falls on a weekend or federal holiday, SSA moves it to the preceding eligible day. The shift can make a payment appear earlier than the nominal first, third or Wednesday date. It does not mean your benefit was permanently rescheduled; it is the calendar adjustment for that month.
Do not try to change the date yourself. SSA determines payment dates from program rules. If you need to plan a bill payment, use the adjusted date shown on the official calendar and allow for your bank’s posting time or mail delivery. Looking at the year-specific calendar is especially important around months that begin on a weekend or contain a federal holiday.

First compare the date you expected with the date on the current SSA calendar, including any weekend or holiday adjustment. If the scheduled date has passed, SSA’s 2026 calendar says: “If you don’t receive your payment on the expected date, please allow three additional mailing days before contacting Social Security.” That three-day instruction is particularly important when you receive a paper check or when delivery, rather than SSA’s scheduling, is the source of the delay.
- Verify that you are checking the correct program and year on the calendar.
- Check your bank account or payment method for a pending or recently posted deposit.
- If the payment is mailed, allow the three additional mailing days specified by SSA.
- After that period, contact SSA at 1-800-772-1213; the automated system can provide delivery information when you say
check delivery
.
A missed date does not by itself tell you that the benefit amount changed or that eligibility ended. Confirm the delivery status with SSA before drawing that conclusion. Keep the calendar date, your payment method and any notice available when you contact the agency so you can describe exactly what is missing.
How to check your exact benefit amount
Your personal amount can include the base benefit, cost-of-living adjustments and deductions. It cannot be calculated reliably from a public average or from your birthday. Use the following order of evidence.

1. Read the amount in your SSA account
Sign in to your personal my Social Security account and open the benefit information or notices associated with your record. The account can show personalized benefit information and, when available, estimates. Review both the gross benefit and any listed deductions so you know why the amount deposited may differ from a headline figure.
Recommended Free Tools
If an estimate is not displayed, do not assume that SSA has determined you will receive no benefit. SSA says an estimate may be unavailable when a person does not yet qualify. The account is still the appropriate place to review the information SSA has on file and any notices that have been issued.
2. Review your COLA or award notice
SSA’s notice states the individual amount and deductions used for the adjustment. For 2026, SSA mailed COLA notices during December, and eligible account holders could view those notices online. The notice is more authoritative for your payment than multiplying last year’s deposit by a percentage, because Medicare premiums, withholding, overpayment recovery and other individual deductions can affect the net amount.
Compare the notice with the amount you actually receive, but compare like with like: a gross figure in the notice may not equal the net deposit after deductions. If your payment changes and you cannot match it to a notice, check the account and contact SSA rather than relying on an internet calculator.
3. Request a benefit verification letter when proof is required
A benefit verification letter is SSA’s official document stating the monthly Social Security and/or SSI benefit. It can also state that a person is not receiving benefits or is waiting for a decision. Use it when a landlord, lender, agency or other organization asks for formal proof rather than an informal account screenshot. SSA describes this document in its Glossary of Social Security Terms.

This letter is useful when the question is not merely “How much do I usually receive?” but “What does SSA officially verify about my benefit status?” It separates proof of an award from a general estimate.
What a Social Security estimate includes—and leaves out
SSA’s benefits estimate service bases a retirement estimate on your earnings record. You can adjust the estimate for expected future income, which is useful when your work plans may change before claiming. The estimate is not guaranteed income: it reflects the record and assumptions entered into the calculator.

- SSA counts covered earnings up to the annual taxable-earnings limit used in its calculation.
- For 2026, that limit is $184,500.
- The described estimate does not count other income such as pensions or investments.
- An estimate may be unavailable if you do not yet qualify, so not seeing one does not establish that your eventual benefit will be zero.
The $184,500 figure is a limit on earnings counted for Social Security tax and benefit calculations; it is not a ceiling on an individual’s monthly benefit. Your claiming age, earnings history and the type of benefit remain central to the personal result.
When reviewing an estimate, distinguish three different numbers: projected monthly benefit, current awarded benefit and net amount after deductions. They answer different questions and should not be substituted for one another.

How to interpret the 2026 figures
SSA announced a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment for 2026. The increase applied to Social Security benefits received in January 2026. Increased SSI payments began with the payment issued on December 31, 2025. These are program-wide effective dates; your exact dollar change appears in your notice and can differ from a simple 2.8% multiplication because of deductions and individual circumstances. See SSA’s 2026 COLA FAQ and October 24, 2025 announcement for the official timing.
| Published 2026 figure | What it means | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| 2.8% COLA | Annual adjustment announced by SSA for eligible Social Security and SSI benefits. | Not a promise that every person’s net deposit rises by exactly 2.8%. |
| $994 maximum federal SSI amount for an eligible individual | Federal SSI standard for 2026 before countable-income reductions. | Not necessarily the amount paid; some states add supplements and countable income can reduce it. |
| $1,491 maximum federal SSI amount for an eligible couple | Federal 2026 SSI standard before applicable reductions. | Not a guaranteed household payment in every state or circumstance. |
| $2,015 rising to $2,071 estimated average monthly retirement benefit | SSA’s January 2026 population-average estimate showing the average before-and-after context. | Not an individual quote or a forecast of your payment. |
| $184,500 maximum taxable earnings | 2026 earnings limit used in the Social Security earnings record and estimate calculations. | Not a maximum monthly Social Security benefit. |
The SSI amounts and average retirement figures come from SSA’s 2026 COLA Fact Sheet. SSI is means-tested, so countable income and living arrangements can reduce the federal maximum. State supplements can also change the total a person receives.
The average retirement figure is useful for broad context only. It combines many beneficiaries with different earnings histories and claiming decisions; it cannot reveal what a particular worker, spouse or survivor will receive.
A practical monthly checking routine
Combining the schedule and amount tools prevents common budgeting errors.
- At the start of the year, open the SSA payment calendar and note each date that applies to your benefit type.
- Mark any preceding-day adjustment caused by a weekend or federal holiday.
- Keep the relevant birthday band or pre-May 1997 status with your notes so you do not apply the wrong rule.
- Sign in to my Social Security after an annual COLA notice or other award notice is issued.
- Record the gross amount, deductions and expected net deposit separately.
- Use a benefit verification letter whenever an organization needs official proof.
- If a deposit or check is missing, follow the three-additional-mailing-days instruction before calling SSA.
This routine separates three facts that are often confused: the date SSA schedules a payment, the date a bank or mail carrier delivers it, and the personal amount after deductions. Repeating the check whenever a new notice arrives helps catch changes without treating a public statistic as a personal quote.

Quick decision guide
- You need the date for a future month: use the year-specific SSA schedule.
- You receive Social Security based on a post-April 30, 1997 claim: apply the second-, third- or fourth-Wednesday birthday band, then confirm the calendar date.
- You receive only SSI: start with the first-of-month entry and check for an adjusted preceding day.
- You receive both SSI and Social Security: check the separate SSI and Social Security entries; the Social Security payment generally follows the third-of-month rule.
- You need your personal dollar amount: read your account or official notice, not an average.
- You need documentary proof: obtain a benefit verification letter.
- The payment is not there: verify the calendar, allow three additional mailing days, then contact SSA.
Annual calendars and benefit figures can change, so bookmark SSA’s pages and verify the information for the year in which you are being paid.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change the date I receive my Social Security benefits?
No. SSA determines the date from the benefit program, the applicable historical rule and, for many beneficiaries, the birthday tied to the earnings record. Use the official calendar rather than trying to select a different date.
How do I know whether my payment follows the Wednesday schedule?
If you received or applied for Social Security after April 30, 1997, your Social Security payment generally follows the second-, third- or fourth-Wednesday birthday grouping. SSI-only payments generally use the first of the month, while people receiving both Social Security and SSI generally receive Social Security on the third of the month. Confirm the exact date on the current SSA calendar.

Check the correct year and program on the SSA calendar, review your bank account or payment method, and allow three additional mailing days as instructed in SSA’s 2026 calendar. Then call 1-800-772-1213 and say “check delivery” when prompted.
How can I prove my benefit amount to another organization?
Request a benefit verification letter. SSA defines it as an official letter stating the monthly Social Security and/or SSI benefit, and it can also show that someone is not receiving benefits or is waiting for a decision.
Does the 2.8% 2026 COLA mean my payment rises by exactly 2.8%?
Not necessarily. The 2.8% adjustment is the program-wide 2026 COLA, but your notice gives the individual amount and deductions. Your net deposit may differ because of personal circumstances and deductions.
Why is my estimate unavailable in my Social Security account?
SSA says an estimate may be unavailable if you do not yet qualify. An unavailable estimate does not establish that your eventual benefit will be zero; review your account information and official notices for your situation.
