A life insurance coverage gap is the difference between what survivors could use after an insured person dies and the money, services, and obligations they still need to cover. It is not a standard percentage of income or a universal dollar amount. The gap depends on the household, the people who rely on the insured, existing assets and benefits, and how long each need will last.
What a coverage gap means
Life insurance pays a death benefit to the beneficiaries named in the policy when the insured dies while coverage is in force. Survivors may use that money for funeral and final expenses, childcare, debt payments, medical bills, education, a mortgage, or everyday living costs. A coverage gap exists when the resources available to survivors are not enough to meet those continuing needs over the period being considered.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Needs: income or unpaid services that disappear, debts, final expenses, care costs, education, and other goals.
- Resources: existing life insurance, savings and investments, property or other assets, and income or benefits that survivors can continue to receive.
- Time: how long each need lasts and whether a policy remains in force for that period.
- Affordability: the premium the household can keep paying without sacrificing other essential financial priorities.
If projected needs exceed projected resources, the difference is a possible shortfall to investigate. It is not, by itself, a precise recommendation to buy a particular amount.

Why the gap changes from one household to another
Income and services can both be lost
The insured person may provide wages, commissions, or business income. They may also provide unpaid work such as childcare, transportation, cooking, home maintenance, or care for an adult relative. Replacing those services can require paid help even when the household does not describe them as income.
Dependents have different timelines
A family with young children may need support until childcare and education responsibilities decline. A couple without dependents may be focused on a mortgage, final expenses, or income support for a surviving partner. Someone supporting a parent or a family member with a disability may face a much longer obligation. The same policy amount cannot fit all of these timelines.
Debt and final costs vary
List mortgages, home-equity loans, credit cards, personal loans, cosigned obligations, and other debts that survivors could have to repay. Add final expenses and possible medical bills. Whether a debt is paid off, refinanced, or shared with another borrower affects the amount that would actually be needed.

Survivors may retain wages, pensions, Social Security or other benefits, rental income, savings, investments, a business interest, or property. Count only resources that are reasonably available for the purpose and time period being examined. A retirement account may be earmarked for later life rather than immediate debt repayment; selling a home may be possible but could conflict with a survivor’s housing needs.
A plain-language worksheet
Use the following four-column exercise before discussing a new policy. Write a separate line for each need or resource instead of placing one broad estimate in a single total.
| Question | What to write down | Useful detail |
|---|---|---|
| Needs | Lost income and services; dependents; debts; final expenses; education; childcare; medical or care costs; inheritance or charitable goals | Amount, owner of the obligation, and who would pay if the insured died |
| Resources | Current death benefits; savings and investments; property or business assets; survivor income and benefits | Whether the resource is liquid, accessible, taxable, or already committed |
| Time | How long each need lasts; policy end dates; employment-linked coverage dates | Separate short-term, medium-term, and lifelong needs |
| Affordability | Premium that can be maintained | Payment frequency, budget stability, and what happens if income falls |
Then compare resources with needs over the relevant period. A simple description might be: “Our current resources appear to cover the mortgage and immediate expenses, but not the income and childcare support needed until the youngest child finishes school.” That statement identifies what to investigate without pretending to produce a universal answer.

Questions that make the discussion concrete
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) frames the exercise with questions that can be asked in the first person:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- “How much of the family income do I provide?”
- “How will my family pay final expenses and repay debts after my death?”
- Who depends on my income or services, and for how long?
- Which expenses would continue, which would end, and which would increase?
- What money or benefits would survivors actually be able to use?
Answering these questions with documents and dates is more reliable than multiplying salary by a fixed number.
How to audit coverage you already have
Start with policy documents, certificates, and beneficiary records rather than memory. For every policy, record:
- the death benefit and whether it is level, decreasing, or otherwise variable;
- the insured person and the owner of the policy;
- each beneficiary and the percentage or order in which benefits are payable;
- the premium amount, due date, payment method, and any rate-change provision;
- the coverage start date, expiration date, conversion rights, and any lapse or reinstatement terms;
- whether the policy is individual or supplied through an employer or association;
- any riders, exclusions, loans, cash value, guarantees, or non-guaranteed values shown in the contract.
Check that beneficiary designations still reflect family circumstances. Marriage, divorce, birth, adoption, death, or a change in a trust can make an old designation unsuitable. The policy contract controls; a remembered headline amount does not.
Workplace insurance deserves a separate check
Employer coverage is often less than a household needs and may not remain available after employment ends, according to NAIC buyer guidance. Find out whether the benefit is a flat amount or tied to salary, whether the employer can change or end it, and whether you can convert or port it when leaving the job. Ask for the deadline, premium, and underwriting rules for any conversion or portability option. Treat workplace insurance as one resource in the worksheet, not automatically as a permanent foundation.

Term and cash-value insurance in plain language
NAIC groups life insurance into two broad categories. Term insurance covers a specified period. Cash-value insurance includes whole life, universal life, and variable life; these policies can remain in force for a longer period if their requirements are met and may build a cash value.

| Feature | Term insurance | Cash-value insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Typical purpose | A need tied to a defined period, such as years of child dependency or a loan term | A need that may continue for life or a policy design that includes cash value |
| Duration | Specified term; renewal or conversion may be available under the contract | Can continue beyond a set term, subject to premiums, policy values, and contract conditions |
| Values | Generally a death benefit during the term; cash value is not the defining feature | Includes a cash-value component; the contract distinguishes guaranteed values from values that depend on assumptions or performance |
| Cost considerations | Premium must be affordable through the selected term and may change at renewal | Premium structure and long-term funding requirements can be more complex; a lapse or policy loan can affect coverage and value |
| Questions to ask | What happens at expiration, renewal, or conversion? | Which benefits and values are guaranteed, what is not guaranteed, and what minimums apply? |
Neither category is automatically right. Match the policy’s duration and features to the need, then test whether the household can keep paying. For a temporary need, paying for features designed for a longer horizon may not fit the budget. For a lifelong obligation, a policy that ends before the obligation does may leave a new gap.
Match duration to the need
Temporary needs
Some obligations have an expected end date: children may become financially independent, a mortgage may be paid down, or a business loan may mature. Coverage can be evaluated against that period, while allowing for uncertainty. Education and care timelines can change, and a policy that expires on a fixed date may not align perfectly with real life.
Long-term or lifelong needs
A surviving partner’s support, a special-needs trust, estate liquidity, or a final-expense goal may last for life. Such needs require attention to policy duration, guarantees, premiums, and the consequences of a lapse. Do not assume that a policy illustration’s projected value is guaranteed; identify the guaranteed minimums in the contract.
Overlapping needs
Households often have several timelines at once. A short-term income need can coexist with a lifelong care or estate goal. Analyze each line separately, then see how existing policies divide the work. One policy need ending does not automatically eliminate every other need.
Affordability is part of the coverage decision
A death benefit that cannot be kept in force does not solve a gap. Set a premium ceiling after accounting for emergency savings, debt payments, health costs, retirement contributions, and other insurance. Test the budget against a job change, reduced hours, a higher renewal premium, or a period of illness.
Ask an insurer or licensed professional to explain the payment schedule and what happens after a missed payment. For cash-value policies, ask how premiums, policy loans, withdrawals, and changes in interest or investment assumptions affect the risk of lapse. Record which figures are guaranteed and which are illustrative.

How to compare a proposed policy with the gap
- Define the need. State whose income or services are being protected, the dependents involved, the debts and final costs, and the expected time period.
- Subtract dependable resources. Include current individual and workplace coverage, accessible assets, and survivor income or benefits that are likely to continue.
- Check the policy amount. Confirm the proposed death benefit, beneficiary structure, term or duration, and any conditions that could change the amount.
- Check the policy features. Identify guarantees, exclusions, riders, conversion rights, renewal terms, cash-value assumptions, and minimum values.
- Stress-test affordability. Determine whether premiums remain payable if income falls or a renewal price rises.
- Document the decision. Keep the worksheet, policy illustration, application, and final contract together so the calculation can be reviewed after a major life change.
The NAIC advises considering what a policy does, how values may change, what is not guaranteed, and whether guaranteed minimums exist. Those questions are more informative than comparing headline death benefits alone.
Replacing or cancelling an existing policy
Do not cancel a current policy merely because a new quote appears cheaper. Compare the existing and proposed contracts first, including benefits, exclusions, guarantees, surrender charges, cash value, conversion rights, and the effect of a new contestability or suicide period where applicable under the contract and law.
Keep the current coverage until the replacement policy has been issued and you have confirmed that it is in force. A health change between application and approval can affect eligibility, rating, or premium. If the new policy is declined, delayed, or issued on different terms, cancelling first can create an avoidable gap. Ask the replacing insurer and a licensed professional to explain required replacement notices and timing in your jurisdiction.
Common explanations that mislead people
“Buy a fixed multiple of salary.”
A salary multiple ignores unpaid services, debts, assets, survivor income, taxes, dependents, and duration. It may be used as a rough conversation starter, but it is not a universal rule or a personal recommendation.
“Employer coverage is enough.”
Employment benefits may be below the household’s calculated need and may end or become expensive when employment ends. Verify the amount and portability before counting it as a long-term resource.

“The cheapest premium is the best answer.”
Price matters only alongside duration, guarantees, exclusions, renewal terms, and the ability to maintain payments. A low initial premium can leave a need uncovered when the policy ends or renews.

“Cash value is always better.”
Cash-value policies have features and obligations that require careful review. Ask which values are guaranteed, how assumptions can change, and what a loan or lapse does to coverage. A longer-duration design is not automatically appropriate for a temporary need.
“A quote is proof of coverage.”
A quote is not an issued contract. The insurer’s underwriting decision and policy documents determine the actual benefit, premium, exclusions, and effective date.
When professional help is useful
A licensed agent, broker, or financial adviser can help when needs involve a business, multiple policies, trusts, estate liquidity, special-needs planning, substantial debt, or complex tax and ownership questions. Ask how the professional is licensed, how they are compensated, which insurers they can represent, and which parts of the recommendation are guaranteed versus based on assumptions. Even with help, keep your own list of needs, resources, time periods, and affordability; it lets you test whether the proposed coverage addresses the household’s actual risk.

When to revisit the worksheet
Review the calculation after marriage, divorce, birth or adoption, a death, a major change in income, a new mortgage or business debt, a change in caregiving responsibilities, a job change, or a significant change in assets. Recheck beneficiary designations and workplace coverage at the same time. A policy that fit one stage of life can become too small, too short, or unnecessarily expensive after circumstances change.
A short explanation you can give another person
“Your coverage gap is the amount your survivors might still need after counting the insurance and other resources they would have. List the income and services you provide, the people and debts that depend on them, final and care costs, and how long each need lasts. Then subtract current policies, savings and assets, and income or benefits that would continue. The remaining difference is a question to investigate, not a universal number. Choose an amount and duration you can keep paying for, and do not cancel current coverage until any replacement is issued and confirmed.”
