The company needs a credible path from measuring a resource through reaching it, extracting and processing it, storing and transporting a usable product, and delivering that product to a paying customer. At each step, distinguish what has been demonstrated from what remains a model, proposal, or company-reported plan.
Can we mine asteroids yet?
Not as an industrial capability. In a June 2023 NASA explainer, author Emily Furfaro wrote: “The technologies for mining asteroids are not well developed.” The same explainer says, “We actually can’t really mine asteroids yet, although many people are working on it — private sector, people outside of NASA.” NASA’s asteroid missions are science missions; they may produce knowledge useful to future mining, but they are not mining operations.

That distinction matters when assessing announcements. A NASA-funded concept is not an operating mine, and a company mission roadmap is not proof that its proposed resource can be extracted commercially. NASA’s 2019 Mini Bee release described an early-stage concept intended to encompass prospecting, extraction, and delivery. Its scope illustrates the chain a mining system would have to connect; it does not establish that the chain has been demonstrated.

A target’s estimated composition is not the same thing as a mineable reserve. A company might infer a material from remote observations, but an inference does not by itself show how much is present, where it is located, whether equipment can reach it, how much can be recovered, or whether the resulting product can be delivered economically.

| Evidence level | What it can establish | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Remote spectral or other astronomical observations | Evidence consistent with a broad surface composition or candidate material. | Accessible depth, local distribution, recoverable quantity, or extraction yield. |
| Close-range prospecting measurements | More target-specific information about material and operating conditions. | That the measured material can be excavated, processed, and stored at useful scale. |
| Subsurface characterization or ground-truthed samples | Stronger evidence about composition and variation below or across the surface. | Industrial throughput, full-system reliability, or a paying market. |
| Integrated extraction and processing demonstration | Evidence that a defined system can produce a specified product under the tested conditions. | Performance on a different asteroid, at longer duration, or at commercial scale unless those conditions were tested. |
Ask the company to identify the specific target and resource—such as water, hydrated minerals, metal, or platinum-group elements—and explain how it distinguishes composition from accessible, processable material. The relevant questions include abundance, grade, spatial distribution, accessible depth, extraction yield, and how uncertainty in each estimate changes the required spacecraft mass, plant design, schedule, and cost.
A 2017 USGS feasibility study examined whether terrestrial mineral-resource assessment methods could be adapted to asteroids. The study explicitly did not include a complete, robust uncertainty analysis, so it should not be treated as a validated reserve-estimation method. NASA’s Robotic Asteroid Prospector (RAP) study identified water and platinum-group metals as potentially feasible near-term resource classes; that is a finding about candidate classes, not proof that a particular company has identified a viable deposit.
How do you evaluate a company’s mission plan?
Ask for a target-specific mission design rather than a generic statement that an asteroid is reachable. The plan should connect the target, launch opportunity, spacecraft, operating environment, mining hardware, and destination for the product. NASA’s RAP study treats mission design, spacecraft, mining technology, and the business case as interdependent for good reason: a weakness in one can make the rest unusable.
- Trajectory and propulsion: What launch window and trajectory are assumed? What are the delta-v requirements and propulsion margins, and how sensitive is the plan to delays or a change in target?
- Navigation and communications: How will the spacecraft determine its position and the asteroid’s shape, rotation, and local conditions? What is the communications plan across the mission?
- Power and thermal control: Can the system operate its prospecting and extraction equipment for the required duration and manage heat in the actual environment?
- Approach and surface operations: How will the spacecraft match rotation, approach a selected site, and maintain position? What prevents contact forces, ejecta, or operating plumes from pushing equipment away in low gravity?
- Fault tolerance: Which single-point failures could end the mission, and what can be recovered, retried, or operated redundantly?
Low gravity and uncertain surface behavior are not minor details. NASA’s earlier in-situ resource utilization overview identifies ultra-low gravity, anchoring, prospecting, excavation, and processing as technology needs. NASA’s Asteroid Soil Strength Evaluation Test (ASSET) project record, updated in 2025, likewise identifies elevated mission risk from poor knowledge of asteroid surface behavior and regolith strength. A proposal should explain how those unknowns affect its chosen operations rather than assume a convenient surface.

What has actually been tested?
Assess each critical subsystem separately, then ask whether the subsystems have been integrated. A useful maturity ladder is:
- Analysis or model: performance is predicted, not demonstrated.
- Laboratory component test: an individual part works under stated lab conditions.
- Integrated ground test: multiple parts operate together on Earth.
- Relevant-environment test: the system is tested under conditions that reproduce important aspects of the mission environment.
- Flight demonstration: hardware operates in space, with results tied to stated objectives.
- Asteroid rendezvous and prospecting: the mission reaches a target and measures it.
- Extraction, processing, and useful delivery: the system recovers a product and delivers it to its intended destination.
For each claimed milestone, record the scale, environment, duration, tested function, result, and who verified it. A launch proves a launch and deployment event; it does not prove that a payload completed its mission objectives. A planned mission is not a completed milestone. NASA’s early-stage description of Mini Bee and its later TechPort project record should be read with that distinction in mind.
How to interpret the optical-mining demonstration
NASA TechPort’s optical-mining project record, updated December 18, 2025, reports an 8 kW full-scale demonstration using high-fidelity asteroid simulant in vacuum, illuminated by a 10 m solar concentrator. The test examined a proposed optical excavation and volatile-extraction method on Earth. It is meaningful ground-test evidence for the tested concept, but it was not mining on an asteroid and does not establish target-specific recovery yield, long-duration operation, or commercial output.

NASA’s 2019 Mini Bee concept described using concentrated sunlight for excavation and extracting volatile material into containment. When assessing a similar approach—or a mechanical or thermal alternative—ask for equivalent detail on how material is accessed, captured, separated, converted into a product, and kept from being lost or contaminated. Relevant test results should address anchoring, thermal management, dust and particle control, throughput, storage, and losses, as applicable to the design.

What do asteroid sample-return missions prove?
They demonstrate important but bounded capabilities. NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission returned 121.6 grams of material from Bennu. That is evidence for specific navigation, contact, sampling, containment, and return operations. It is not evidence of continuous extraction, industrial throughput, or profitable economics. Sample return and mining have different objectives and operating scales, so do not use one as a substitute for evidence of the other.
How should you compare companies?
Use the same questions for each company, and label the origin of each answer. Company statements, agency project records, technical reports, and independently verified results are different kinds of evidence.
| Comparison axis | What to record |
|---|---|
| Target and resource evidence | Named target, candidate resource, measurement method, and remaining uncertainty about abundance, distribution, accessible depth, and yield. |
| Mission accessibility | Target-specific trajectory, launch opportunity, propulsion margin, mission duration, and navigation and communications approach. |
| Subsystem maturity | Milestone reached by each critical subsystem, including test scale, conditions, duration, and integration status. |
| Relevant-environment and flight record | What was tested in a relevant environment or in flight, what objectives were met, and who confirmed the results. |
| Extraction and processing | Proposed product, throughput and recovery yield evidence, containment, processing losses, storage, and transport method. |
| Destination and buyer | Where the product is delivered, who is expected to buy it, and what infrastructure makes it useful there. |
| Economics and schedule | Whether cost and schedule assumptions include the full mission chain, delays, failures, retries, and customer acquisition. |
| Transparency | Which claims are company-reported, which appear in agency or technical records, and which have independent confirmation. |
How realistic is the business case?
Start with the product’s destination. Water could be useful for propellant, life support, or shielding in space, but only if logistics and customer infrastructure make it valuable there. Metals intended for Earth face terrestrial supply, refining, and market-absorption constraints. A theoretical resource value calculated by multiplying an asteroid’s estimated metal content by a spot price is not a forecast of recoverable, saleable product.

What do public AstroForge claims establish?
AstroForge’s company pages describe a goal of extracting platinum-group metals and putting them into Earth’s supply chain. Its mission page labels Odin as launched in 2025 and DeepSpace-2 as a planned 2026 mission. The company’s Odin page says the spacecraft launched on February 26, 2025, to obtain images of asteroid 2022 OB5, and that it is applying lessons to DeepSpace-2.
Those pages establish what AstroForge says it aims to do, reports having launched, and plans next. They do not, on their own, establish that Odin achieved its imaging objective or provide an independently confirmed engineering account of the mission. Apply the same evidence standard to other companies: report schedules and objectives as company-reported until results are independently confirmed.
What should make an investor or reader cautious?
- A resource-value headline without target-specific measurements or a clear explanation of uncertainty.
- A subsystem test presented as proof of an integrated mine, or a simulant test presented as asteroid performance.
- A launch announcement treated as proof that a payload completed its objective.
- A sample-return result used to imply continuous industrial extraction.
- A roadmap that omits anchoring, surface mechanics, particle control, processing, storage, or delivery.
- A revenue model based on total estimated metal content and spot prices rather than recoverable product and an identified buyer.
- A company-reported milestone described without identifying it as company-reported or without independent confirmation.
No comparable, independently verified commercial asteroid-mining production, throughput, or revenue figure is established by the sources cited here. The key due-diligence question is therefore not which company sounds most certain, but how much of its target-specific, end-to-end chain has evidence behind it—and how much remains a proposed next step.
