Start with revenue recognized under the company’s accounting policy, read the issuer’s exact definition of annual recurring revenue (ARR), then test whether operating cash flow and capital spending support the growth. ARR is an issuer-defined, point-in-time operating metric; it is not automatically GAAP revenue annualized or a forecast.
A reliable comparison preserves the reporting period, currency, contract scope and recognition timing for every figure. The process below shows how to do that from the latest Form 10-K, Form 10-Q and contemporaneous earnings materials.

What you are actually comparing
An AI company can discuss several different economic signals in the same earnings presentation:
- Recognized revenue: amounts recorded for the reporting period under the company’s accounting policy.
- Recurring-revenue metrics: ARR, annual run rate or another operating measure calculated from contracts, invoices or usage at a particular date.
- Cash generation: net cash provided by operating activities and, where supplied, a company-defined free-cash-flow measure.
These measures answer different questions. Revenue tells you what the company recognized during a period. ARR describes a run rate based on a selected contract population at a date. Operating cash flow shows cash generated by operations after the timing effects of collections, deferred revenue and other working-capital movements. A free-cash-flow figure then applies the issuer’s stated adjustments, often including capital spending but sometimes more.
#1 Best Overall
Keep the three signals separate in your notes and tables. A large ARR number cannot replace recognized revenue, and positive free cash flow cannot prove that every dollar of revenue is recurring.
1. Establish what “revenue” means in the filing
Use the latest annual or quarterly filing rather than a marketing headline. The income statement gives the period, accounting basis and currency; the revenue-recognition note explains when the company records different products and services.
Capture the reporting context
- Reporting period and period length (quarter, half-year or full fiscal year).
- Currency and whether growth is reported or presented on a constant-currency basis.
- Consolidated revenue versus a segment or product figure.
- Any change in fiscal year, acquisition accounting or presentation that affects comparability.
For a historical growth comparison, use the same period length and the same currency basis for both periods. If management presents a constant-currency number, label it separately from the reported figure rather than blending the two.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSeparate recurring and non-recurring lines
Many software companies disclose subscription, usage, maintenance, implementation, consulting, hardware, licensing and other categories. Record each disclosed line before deciding how much of the total is recurring. Revenue associated with an AI product is not automatically subscription revenue; the filing must establish the contract and recognition pattern.
Why billing and recognition can diverge
UiPath’s FY2025 Form 10-K illustrates the timing issue. Subscription license revenue for certain term-based on-premises licenses is generally recognized when the customer can use and benefit from the software, while SaaS and maintenance revenue is recognized ratably over the contract. UiPath calculates ARR from invoiced amounts, so the ARR date and the GAAP-revenue period need not line up.
This is why an invoice, a contract start date and a revenue-recognition event should be treated as separate dates in your worksheet. A customer can be invoiced before the associated service is recognized as revenue, or a contract can be recognized at a point in time rather than over the term.

2. Read the ARR definition line by line
ARR is an issuer-defined operating metric, not a standardized accounting subtotal. Copy the definition exactly, record the date it applies to and note any methodology change or recast of earlier periods.
Questions every ARR definition should answer
- Does the metric include only active, binding contracts at period-end?
- Are monthly auto-renewals or other short-duration agreements included?
- Are booked contracts included before service begins?
- Does the calculation include consumption commitments, term licenses, support, services or hardware?
- Does it assume renewal of a contract that has not yet renewed?
- How are cancellations, contractions, price changes and foreign-currency movements handled?
- Are lifetime or life-of-device arrangements excluded?
- Has the calculation changed, and were prior periods recast?
If the filing does not answer one of these questions, mark the item as not stated instead of filling the gap with an assumption.
Why ARR is not annualized GAAP revenue
Samsara’s FY2025 annual report makes the distinction explicit: “ARR is a performance measure that should be viewed independently of revenue and does not represent our revenue under GAAP on an annualized basis or a forecast of GAAP revenue.” UiPath’s FY2025 Form 10-K likewise says, “ARR is not a forecast of future revenue.”
Those statements are practical warnings. ARR can annualize a selected contract value at a point in time, while recognized revenue reflects the company’s accounting policy and the portion of performance obligations satisfied during the period. The two numbers can move differently without either being misstated.
Examples of different scopes
UiPath describes ARR as annualized invoiced amounts by solution SKU and warns that the timing differs from GAAP revenue. Samsara defines ARR using annual contract value for subscription contracts in effect at period-end, excludes life-of-device contracts and says the measure is not standardized. One SEC-filed issuer example includes certain short-term contracts and explains that annualizing them can place more into ARR than the contracts’ total value at period-end.

Because those scopes differ, two companies can report an identically named metric while counting different contracts. Put the definition next to every ARR number in a comparison table.

3. Preserve dates, scope and currency when comparing companies
Use like-for-like periods and disclose the scope of each metric. For company-to-company comparisons, reported revenue growth is usually the cleaner historical measure because it covers a defined accounting period. ARR comparisons require the additional definition column.
| Comparison axis | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Recognized revenue | GAAP revenue for the same period, with line-item mix and growth | It is the amount reported under the company’s accounting policy. |
| Recurring-revenue claim | Exact ARR or run-rate definition, date, contract scope and annualization method | Identical labels can represent different calculations. |
| Recognition and billing timing | Point-in-time or over-time recognition, invoice dates and contract start dates | Timing differences can make ARR and revenue diverge. |
| Cash conversion | Operating cash flow, receivables, deferred revenue and other working-capital movements | It tests whether reported growth is accompanied by operating cash generation. |
| Free cash flow | Issuer definition and reconciliation from operating cash flow | Adjustments vary and may include capitalized software, leases, restructuring or other items. |
| Comparability and risk | Definition changes, currency, concentration, retention, cancellations and contractions | A headline metric may be less comparable or less durable than it appears. |
Keep the figures labeled
For fiscal 2025, Samsara reported $2,537.927 million of total revenue and $2,223.197 million of ARR. Keep both figures labeled exactly as reported; do not call ARR annualized GAAP revenue. UiPath reported $1,666.136 million of ARR at January 31, 2025, based on its invoiced-amount methodology. These are company-specific, dated examples, not an AI-sector benchmark.
When a company reports customer retention, renewal, expansion or contraction, read the definition of that measure as carefully as ARR. A retention rate based on a selected customer cohort is not automatically comparable with another issuer’s rate based on a different cohort or contract scope.

4. Test whether the growth converts into cash
After recording revenue and ARR, move to the cash-flow statement. Start with net cash provided by operating activities and compare its trend with recognized revenue. Then inspect the working-capital lines that can make collections and revenue move on different schedules.
Inspect the cash-flow bridge
- Receivables: rising receivables can indicate that invoices have not yet been collected, even when revenue is recognized.
- Deferred revenue: increases can reflect cash received before the related revenue is recognized; decreases can have the opposite timing effect.
- Other working capital: read the filing’s explanation for material movements rather than assuming they represent recurring operating improvement.
- Non-cash items: understand which reconciliation adjustments affect operating cash flow without being current-period cash receipts or payments.
Do not infer a cash problem from one quarter’s timing movement alone. Look at the year-over-year trend and the filing’s explanations, then determine whether the movement reverses or persists.
Understand free cash flow as an issuer-defined measure
Free cash flow is commonly presented as operating cash flow less capital spending, but companies can add or subtract other items. Check whether the reconciliation includes purchases of property and equipment, capitalized software, lease payments, restructuring, transaction costs or another adjustment.
Rank #4
Box reported $332.3 million of net cash provided by operating activities and $304.6 million of non-GAAP free cash flow for the year ended January 31, 2025. Its filing identifies operating cash flow as the nearest GAAP equivalent and says, “The presentation of non-GAAP free cash flow is also not meant to be considered in isolation or as an alternative to cash flows from operating activities as a measure of liquidity.” Report both numbers and the reconciliation; do not substitute the non-GAAP figure for operating cash flow.
Useful calculations you can make
You may calculate a simple operating-cash-flow margin by dividing net cash provided by operating activities by recognized revenue for the same period. If you calculate a free-cash-flow margin, use the issuer’s stated free-cash-flow figure and label it as non-GAAP where applicable. These are your analytical ratios, not standardized company metrics. Keep the numerator and denominator on the same period and currency basis.
5. Build a repeatable comparison worksheet
A worksheet prevents a persuasive headline from replacing the underlying evidence. Use one row per company and retain the filing date and page or note reference in your own records.
- Enter recognized revenue. Record the period, currency, total revenue and disclosed mix of subscription, usage, services, hardware or other categories.
- Copy the ARR definition. Include the measurement date, contract population, annualization method and exclusions. Do not paraphrase away a limitation.
- Record recognition timing. Mark which material revenue streams are recognized at a point in time and which are recognized over time, using the company’s note.
- Record operating cash flow. Use net cash provided by operating activities for the same period as revenue.
- List working-capital movements. Note material changes in receivables, deferred revenue and other operating assets or liabilities.
- Record free cash flow and reconciliation. Identify every adjustment and the company’s stated nearest GAAP measure.
- Check durability signals. Add customer concentration, retention, renewal, expansion, contraction and cancellation information when disclosed, with each measure’s definition.
- Flag comparability breaks. Mark currency changes, methodology changes, recast periods, acquisitions and any contract categories included by one company but excluded by another.
Your final comparison should let a reader see what was recognized, what was annualized, what was collected and what adjustments were made to arrive at free cash flow.

When ARR is higher than recognized revenue
A higher ARR figure can result from annualizing active contracts, invoicing before revenue recognition, or including contracts whose service period extends beyond the reporting period. It is not, by itself, evidence that revenue is misstated or that the full ARR will appear as next year’s revenue.

When revenue grows faster than ARR
The reverse can occur when point-in-time licenses, usage, implementation or other non-ARR items contribute to the period’s revenue. Check the line-item mix and the ARR exclusions before treating the divergence as a warning.

When cash flow lags revenue
Receivables growth, contract billing schedules or investment in working capital can delay cash collection. The filing’s cash-flow reconciliation and balance-sheet movements show whether the lag is a timing effect or a continuing deterioration. One period is not enough to establish a trend.
When free cash flow is close to operating cash flow
A small difference may indicate limited capital spending under that issuer’s definition, but you still need the reconciliation. Another company may classify capitalized software, leases or restructuring differently, making the percentages non-comparable.
7. Common traps and the correction for each
| Trap | Why it fails | Better practice |
|---|---|---|
| Treating ARR as annualized GAAP revenue | ARR is a point-in-time operating metric with issuer-specific scope. | Show ARR beside recognized revenue and quote the definition. |
| Multiplying one strong month by 12 | The result may ignore contract duration, cancellations, contractions and the issuer’s method. | Use the company’s stated calculation and assumptions. |
| Comparing ARR labels without definitions | Companies may include different contracts, renewals or short-term arrangements. | Place each definition and measurement date next to its number. |
| Calling every AI-related dollar recurring | Implementation, consulting, hardware, usage and point-in-time licenses may not recur. | Use the revenue-recognition note and disclosed mix. |
| Using adjusted free cash flow as a universal standard | Issuer adjustments differ and can obscure the nearest GAAP measure. | Report operating cash flow, the issuer’s free-cash-flow figure and the reconciliation. |
| Ignoring methodology changes | A revised definition can make older periods appear to change for reasons unrelated to performance. | Check for recasts and explain the break in the series. |
| Presenting one software issuer as an AI benchmark | Company examples do not establish a market-wide AI revenue or cash-conversion range. | Apply the framework to the specific AI company’s latest filing. |

Recognized revenue growth is clear for a defined period, ARR has a transparent contract scope, the methodology is stable, and operating cash flow is explained with working-capital movements. Free cash flow is reconciled to operating cash flow.
Promising but timing-sensitive claim
ARR is supported by active contracts, but invoicing, contract starts or point-in-time recognition create a large timing gap with revenue. Cash flow may be positive or negative depending on collections. The correct conclusion is that timing requires monitoring, not that ARR equals future revenue.
Low-comparability claim
The issuer changes the ARR definition, includes short-term or unstarted contracts without clear quantification, reports a nonstandard free-cash-flow adjustment or omits material mix information. You can report the company’s figures, but a direct comparison with another issuer is not reliable.
Cash-conversion concern
Revenue and ARR rise while operating cash flow weakens, receivables expand materially or deferred revenue falls without a clear explanation. Investigate the filing’s reconciliation and subsequent periods before drawing a conclusion.

Official filings can establish how a particular issuer defines ARR, recognizes revenue and calculates cash-flow measures. They do not, by themselves, establish a representative AI-industry revenue range, an aggregate market figure or a universal cash-conversion benchmark. The Samsara, UiPath and Box figures above are dated company examples and should be replaced with the latest filing when making a current comparison.
The most defensible analysis therefore has three layers: reported revenue under the accounting policy, the issuer’s precisely defined recurring metric, and cash generated by operations after examining working-capital timing. Keeping those layers separate prevents an annualized contract snapshot or an adjusted cash figure from being mistaken for recognized, durable revenue.
