How to Choose a Smartphone by Brand, Carrier, or Features

By TheFinanceBase Team 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best smartphone is not necessarily the one with the highest camera resolution or fastest processor. Choose in this order: carrier compatibility, operating system and ecosystem, total cost, software-support life, and the features you actually use. Then select the model, storage capacity, and purchase method.

This approach helps prevent an expensive mismatch—such as buying a phone that lacks your carrier’s 5G features, breaks compatibility with your watch, or appears cheap only because the price depends on years of bill credits.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

1. Define your requirements before comparing phones

Write down the following before opening a phone comparison chart.

Your current ecosystem

  • What phone do you use now?
  • Do you own an Apple Watch, Mac, iPad, AirPods, Galaxy Watch, Chromebook, Windows PC, or other ecosystem accessories?
  • Do your family, school, or workplace rely on iMessage, FaceTime, Google services, or a particular messaging platform?
  • Are you prepared to move photos, passwords, messages, health data, and authentication apps?

Your real budget

Compare the full cost, not just the advertised monthly device payment. Set limits for:

  • Case, charger, screen protector, and insurance
  • Cloud storage or replacement accessories
  • The number of years you expect to keep the phone

Your three most important features

Rank only your top three. Possible priorities include camera and video, battery life, compact size, a large display, gaming, durability, software updates, storage, accessibility, privacy, repairability, wireless charging, international travel, a stylus, or a foldable design.

Any feature that is genuinely non-negotiable should eliminate a phone before you score the remaining options.

2. Choose iPhone or Android before choosing a model

When iPhone is the better fit

Start with iPhone if you already use Apple devices or services and want continuity with iMessage, FaceTime, Apple Watch, AirPods, Macs, iPads, iCloud, and Apple support channels. Apple offers battery and repair service through Apple Stores, Authorized Service Providers, and Apple Repair Centers, although availability depends on the model and location. See Apple’s repair and battery-service information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

iPhone also offers a relatively limited and consistent model range. That can simplify the decision, but it provides less variety in price, design, multitasking features, and hardware than Android.

When Android is the better fit

Android is usually the better starting point if you want more manufacturers, prices, sizes, camera systems, charging options, stylus phones, foldables, customization, or multitasking features.

  • Google Pixel: a strong fit for Google services, a relatively direct Android experience, computational photography, and Google software features. Compatibility varies by exact model and market; Google warns that not every Pixel works with every carrier’s 5G network. Check Google’s Pixel carrier guidance.
  • Samsung Galaxy: a strong fit for a broad Android range, high-end displays, extensive camera hardware, multitasking, styluses, foldables, and Samsung accessories. Carrier support for Wi-Fi calling, hotspot, and other services can vary, even on unlocked models; see Samsung’s unlocked-phone information.
  • Motorola, OnePlus, and other brands: evaluate each model’s update policy, repair access, camera performance, carrier certification, and resale value. Do not assume all Android phones offer the same support or network features.

Account for switching costs

Changing platforms can affect message history, paid apps, subscriptions, password managers, health data, wearables, smart-home devices, family-location services, backups, and two-factor authentication.

Back up the old phone and verify account access before trading it in. Do not erase or mail it until the new phone is activated and you have tested calls, texts, photos, contacts, authentication, banking apps, and other essentials.

3. Choose the carrier before the phone

Coverage matters more than the national headline

Test the network at home, work, school, along your commute, in rural areas, at crowded venues, and at places you travel. If relevant, test hotspot performance and international roaming.

  • Unbelievable battery life. Work and play nonstop with a long-lasting 5000mAh battery.*****

Coverage maps do not show the entire experience. Congestion, roaming agreements, deprioritization, indoor signal, local spectrum, and the phone’s supported bands can affect performance. 5G is not automatically faster; results depend on the network, plan, signal, congestion, and device.

Compare service types

Service Potential advantages Potential drawbacks
Major postpaid carrier Financing, promotions, family plans, roaming, and broad support Higher ongoing cost and promotions tied to long commitments
Prepaid service Simple billing and potentially lower prices Fewer perks, financing choices, or roaming features
MVNO Low prices and flexible service Potentially lower priority during congestion, limited support, or weaker international options
Family, employer, or student plan Lower cost per line Separating accounts or changing lines can be complicated

There is no universally best carrier. The right choice depends on location, data use, number of lines, travel, hotspot needs, and the actual promotion terms.

4. Decide between an unlocked and carrier phone

Unlocked phones

An unlocked phone is not restricted to one carrier, so it can make switching providers or using a local travel SIM easier. Phones sold directly by the Google Store are unlocked, and Google says a SIM-unlocked Pixel can be used with any compatible provider. However, unlocked does not mean compatible with every network or feature.

Unlocked models may cost more upfront and may not qualify for a carrier’s promotional trade-in or installment credits.

Carrier-sold phones

A carrier purchase can reduce the upfront cost through financing and trade-in credits. It can also combine billing and support in one place. The apparent savings may depend on:

  • A qualifying plan or a new line
  • A specific trade-in condition
  • Bill credits spread over several years
  • Keeping the line active through the promotion
  • Taxes, activation, upgrade, and insurance charges

Carrier unlocking rules are carrier-specific. Samsung says unlock requirements are determined by the carrier, not Samsung. Check the policies for AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile before buying.

Understand the difference between “unlocked” and “fully compatible”

  • SIM unlocked: not restricted to one provider.
  • Network compatible: supports the carrier’s required technologies and bands.
  • Carrier certified: approved by the carrier for expected service.
  • Fully feature-compatible: calling, texting, 5G, VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling, hotspot, voicemail, eSIM, and roaming work as needed.

Before purchasing an unlocked phone, verify the exact model number—not merely the product family—along with LTE and 5G bands, eSIM and physical-SIM support, VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling, hotspot service, voicemail, and international roaming.

5. Compare features by what you do

Performance

Calls, messaging, maps, email, banking, streaming, and social media generally do not require a flagship processor. Smooth software, battery efficiency, camera processing, storage, modem quality, and update support may matter more.

Rank #3
Samsung Galaxy A16 4G LTE (128GB + 4GB) International Model SM-A165F/DS Factory Unlocked, 6.7", Dual SIM, 50MP Triple Camera (Case Bundle), Black
  • Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
  • Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
  • Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.

For gaming or demanding editing, look for sustained performance, thermal management, a high-refresh-rate display, responsive touch controls, fast storage, charging speed, and a reliable modem. Benchmark scores measure particular tests; they do not guarantee battery life, camera quality, or performance after extended use.

Camera

Match the camera to your subjects:

Use case Prioritize
Children, pets, and action Autofocus, shutter response, motion processing, and stabilization
Night photos Sensor and lens quality, optical stabilization, processing, and autofocus
Distant subjects A genuine telephoto lens and optical quality, not just a large digital-zoom number
Landscapes and interiors Ultra-wide quality, dynamic range, and edge detail
Social video Front-camera quality, stabilization, microphones, skin tones, and app support

Megapixels alone do not determine image quality. Compare daylight, low-light, moving-subject, zoom, front-camera, and video samples. Also check camera-app speed, audio quality, storage demands, and compatibility with the social apps you use.

Battery and charging

Battery capacity in milliamp-hours is not directly comparable across phones. Display size, processor efficiency, modem behavior, software, signal strength, navigation, gaming, hotspot use, and video recording all affect endurance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Heavy travelers should prioritize tested battery life and charging speed. Hotspot users should consider modem and thermal performance. If you plan to keep the phone for years, investigate battery replacement options and cost. Apple’s battery-service documentation explains its official repair paths, which vary by model and location.

Storage

Buy for the years you expect to keep the phone. More storage is valuable for 4K video, games, offline media, frequent travel, and long ownership. Cloud-photo users and light app users may need less.

Do not assume storage can be expanded. Many premium phones do not accept memory cards, so verify the exact model before ordering.

Display and size

Consider one-handed reach, weight, thickness, outdoor brightness, refresh rate, resolution, color, curved versus flat edges, text scaling, and flicker behavior. A large screen helps with reading, navigation, and video but adds weight. Compact phones are easier to carry but may have smaller batteries or less camera hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Software support, privacy, and security

Check the exact model’s promised security-update and operating-system-support period, when that period starts, and whether the policy differs by region, carrier, or purchase channel. Google publishes model-level Pixel specifications, including support information, SIM details, and hearing-aid compatibility, at its Pixel specifications pages.

Compare update longevity, permission controls, app-store policies, cloud-backup settings, advertising controls, encryption, account recovery, biometric options, enterprise management, and repair-part limitations. Avoid absolute claims that one platform is always more private or secure.

AI features should be evaluated as specific tools. Confirm whether an advertised feature is available in your country and language, requires an account or subscription, runs on-device or in the cloud, and what data it handles. “AI” is not a standardized performance measurement.

Durability and repair

Check water and dust resistance, screen and back-glass repair prices, battery availability, authorized and independent repair options, parts pairing, warranty exclusions, insurance deductibles, and case availability. Water resistance is not waterproofing; liquid damage may not be covered, and seals can weaken after impact or repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Handle special cases before buying

Imported models

Non-U.S. phones may lack U.S. frequency bands, carrier certification, eSIM, emergency-calling support, local warranty coverage, timely updates, or region-specific services. Samsung distinguishes U.S. unlocked phones from non-U.S. models in its regional-device guidance. For a U.S. buyer, a lower import price may not justify these risks.

Used and refurbished phones

Verify the exact model and storage, battery health, activation-lock status, IMEI or blacklist status, carrier lock, financing balance, water damage, replacement parts, remaining security support, warranty, and return period.

Dual-SIM and travel

Check whether the phone supports two active lines or merely stores multiple eSIM profiles, whether it has a physical SIM slot, and whether both lines can receive calls and texts simultaneously. Also verify carrier eSIM support, roaming prices, local-SIM compatibility, and unlock status. SIM configuration can differ by Pixel model and market, so inspect the exact regional specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accessibility

Test screen readers, magnification, large text, voice control, live captions, hearing-aid compatibility, haptic controls, one-handed operation, and emergency features. Accessibility needs should be a primary buying criterion, not an afterthought.

7. Calculate total ownership cost

Use this formula:

Total cost = device payments + taxes and fees + required service-plan cost + insurance + accessories − guaranteed credits or trade-in value.

For a fixed ownership period:

Monthly ownership cost = total cost over the period ÷ months owned.

Keep these items separate in your worksheet:

  • Guaranteed discounts
  • Promotional bill credits
  • Estimated resale value
  • Conditional trade-in value
  • Manufacturer rebates or retailer gift cards
  • Financing costs
  • Required plan cost
  • New accessories or ecosystem devices

A “free phone” may require a new line, an expensive plan, a trade-in, or years of bill credits. Compare the cost of staying with that carrier against the cost of buying unlocked and using prepaid or MVNO service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Use a weighted shortlist

After eliminating phones that fail non-negotiable requirements, score two or three finalists from 1 to 5 in each category:

  • Carrier compatibility
  • Ecosystem fit
  • Total cost
  • Software-support horizon
  • Battery
  • Camera
  • Size and comfort
  • Durability and repair
  • Storage
  • Accessibility
  • Privacy and security
  • Resale or trade-in value

Give more important categories higher weights. A simple weighted score is more useful than a universal ranking, but never let a high average score override a failed must-have requirement.

9. Verify everything before ordering

  1. Confirm the exact model number, storage, region, and SIM configuration.
  2. Check full carrier compatibility, including VoLTE, 5G, Wi-Fi calling, hotspot, voicemail, and roaming.
  3. Confirm whether the phone is unlocked and whether it has a financing balance or activation lock.
  4. Read the update policy for that exact model and market.
  5. Calculate device, plan, trade-in, credit, insurance, tax, and accessory costs.
  6. Read trade-in condition rules, return deadlines, and cancellation terms.
  7. Confirm warranty and repair options.
  8. Buy the case, charger, or other required accessories only after checking compatibility.

10. Transfer and test before erasing the old phone

Back up the old device and transfer passwords, passkeys, authenticator accounts, contacts, photos, messages, and health data. Activate the eSIM or physical SIM, then test calls, texts, mobile data, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, hotspot, camera, charging, notifications, accessibility tools, banking apps, and two-factor authentication.

Keep the old phone until the new one passes these checks and the return period has not expired.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A compact decision tree

  • Already own several Apple devices? Start with iPhone and calculate the cost of replacing incompatible accessories.
  • Want Android flexibility or Samsung-specific hardware? Start with Galaxy.
  • Want Google software and computational photography? Evaluate Pixel, then verify the exact carrier variant.
  • Need the lowest total cost? Compare midrange and refurbished phones, not only current flagships.
  • Need carrier freedom? Prefer a U.S. unlocked model, but confirm complete network and feature compatibility.
  • Need a particular feature? Let that feature eliminate unsuitable phones before comparing prices.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
